Galatians: Chapter 4

Remember, just ‘learning’ God’s Word is NOT sufficient. We must sincerely and diligently APPLY it to our lives. As we continue our study, be careful to seek to know how YOU should apply God’s revealed Truths to your own life. Do you see any areas of sin that you need to work on?

4:1-2

Paul clarifies the distinction between a new Believer, a young child, and the mature Believer, who has studied God’s Word and carefully applied it to their life. The immature believer needs guidance and direction in order to learn and apply God’s Truth to their life. The Believer is “born again” yet must make an effort to mature in Christ. That new Believer is much like a young child, needing encouragement and protection. Thus, the heir is like a servant, being overseen by a guardian. Even though the Believer will eventually become a mature heir, in the beginning, they are like young children. The process of becoming mature and being transformed we know is sanctification. We are all on that journey from being immature to mature; from being disobedient to obedient; from just knowing Jesus is our Savior and Lord to discovering the unbelievable Grace of God through the working of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Our part is to seek God with ALL our heart, soul, mind and spirit. As we honestly seek to obey God in all He reveals to us, we slowly mature and become sanctified, getting closer to glorification with Christ. When will that time be? The time set by God the Father: at our Rapture or passing from this life into Eternity.

4:3

Paul reminds us that as children, we are subject to the household rules. As slaves, or servants, they were kept under the rules and regulations of the Law. This bondage was to the worldly system. Paul uses this analogy to contrast their former position to their newfound freedom in Jesus. We should not be influenced or controlled by the worldly influences. We know better; we understand the eternal significance of all we do, say and even think. Our value system is based on what Jesus has revealed to us in His Word, not on the warped value system of our culture. Think about it, the world says: “Go for it! Get everything you can for yourself; you’re number one.” Advertisements all encourage selfishness; Me, I, Myself, Mine, My wants, desires. Selfishness, Greed, Envy, Deceit, Stealing, Lying, Immorality; all these evils are the result of Self-Pride. I, I, I. Changing our mindset and attitude of Selfishness to a Servant of God is not an instant change; it takes time and effort. We must work at obeying God and cooperating with the Holy Spirit to allow God to transform us into His Image.

4:4-5

At the exact perfect time, God sent His Son, Jesus, born of a woman, under the Law, to redeem and purchase our freedom. Jesus paid the ransom for us so that we might be adopted and become sons of God. God’s timing is perfect. We want God to hurry up or wait or meet our timetable or schedule. Yet He has everything in control on His perfect schedule. The predictions, or prophecies of the birth of the Messiah, Jesus, were given throughout all the Old Testament. All these predictions came true at the exact time foretold. This assures us that God is in control and His timing is perfect.

4:6

Note that two major accomplishments were completed by Jesus: 1. We were redeemed from the slavery of sin. 2. We are adopted as God’s children. Wow! Think of the double blessing. Just being freed from sin is life-transforming. But being promised to become children of God? Sanctification is the process that transforms us. Our rewards in Heaven are directly related to our cooperation with the Holy Spirit in our transformation. Jesus has wonderful rewards waiting for us, if only we will claim them by our obedience to His Holy Spirit. We can’t and don’t have to ‘earn’ our sanctification. The Holy Spirit will do it through us, if we will just let God be in control. Oh, it’s difficult to give up our illusion of control. We think we control our lives, yet in reality, God is in control. We struggle against God when we try to do it our way. When we pray, seeking God’s direction, guidance and wisdom, then we are given the insights so we may obey. Our choices are what confirm our obedience. Do we act like God’s children, or like children of the world? We respond to God as he is our loving Father, or Daddy, as Paul refers to the intimate personal name for God as Abba. You can easily tell if you are established and grounded as God’s child by your decisions. Think about it how do you respond during a crisis? Do you panic, experience fear and loss of control? Are you desperately seeking someone to rescue you? Or are you calm and praying for guidance and direction from the Holy Spirit, listening for clear insights and wisdom? Do you have Hope and Peace about the situation? You should IF you are firmly established and grounded in God’s Word. Secure in knowing God is in control, regardless of the circumstances. You decide by your choices to follow Jesus, no matter what. Be honest, how do you ACT?

4:7

So, in summary, we are no longer slaves to sin and to the world’s opinions and lies. We are heirs of the Kingdom of God, Children of the Father, our Creator, Savior, and Lord. When God calls us His Sons and Daughters; we are to reflect that Truth in our lives. When we dishonor God by disobeying His commands, we, in effect, blaspheme His Name! When we do not take the name of God seriously, we take His name in vain. We harm and dishonor our God and our fellow Believers when we act in a manner that follows the world rather than our Savior and Lord. See Romans 2:24 and 1 Timothy 6:1, etc. Note that many people erroneously believe that “taking God’s name in vain” simply means to curse; this is not True. Whenever we dishonor God, we dishonor His Name. As we discover these Truth’s, we begin to understand how the ten commandments were only the simplified Law. Jesus came to fulfill the Law and write it in our hearts so that our hearts would become new, ‘born again’ and seek His Truth, Love and Purity.

4:8-9

Remember, before you became a ‘born again’ Believer, you followed the gods of the world. Those gods are the worldly lusts and greed of materialism. Seeking and ‘worshiping’ things and self-gratification. Oh, I wish I could be like… look like… have like…; you fill in the blanks. (9.) Now you know the One True God; you are known and loved and redeemed by Him. So, how in the world can you turn back again to the worldly values, or Judaism, or paganism, or anything else, and become slaves to those weak and worthless things? The rules and regulation of Judaism were bondage and slavery, they were nothing compared to the Freedom and Truth they had in Christ.

4:10

Understanding that the Jews honored special days, months and years is crucial to their religion. The Galatians had begun to observe these special times, thinking that by doing so they could gain additional merit before God. This is adding ‘works’ to the work of Christ. No works can add to our justification, or our sanctification. Remember, the Sabbath day is Saturday. That was a day of rest for the Jews. Our Rest is in Christ, every single day! We now know that the True Sabbath Rest is always in Jesus. (See Hebrews 4:9; Matthew 11:28, etc.) Jesus is also our Firstfruits. (See John 12:23, etc.) And our Passover is Jesus. (See 1 Corinthian 5: 7, 8, etc.) All the special days of Judaism pointed to Jesus!

4:11

Paul nearly cries out: “Have I labored to the point of exhaustion for nothing!” You can almost hear his anguish as he exhorts them. Earlier he had said “Have you also suffered for nothing?” The warning against Legalism must be given over and over because we are all subject to those who would add “something” to the saving work of Christ. Baptism, Communion, Confirmation, etc. Remember, JESUS + nothing = Eternal Salvation. Some ‘spiritual leaders’ sound good, and make great impressions and are very convincing; so, beware. Always check what they say and do against God’s Word. See 1 John 2 for warnings about those who claim to be Christians YET would lead you astray.

4:12a

Paul passionately pleads with his Galatian Brothers to become as he is, free of the bondage of Jewish ritualism, ordinances, and laws. Paul tells them he had become like them, a ‘Gentile’ in his freedom from the restrictions of Judaism; as a true Believer, he was entirely free of Jewish law.

4:12b-13

The last part of 12, “You did me no wrong”, actually belongs with verse 13. Not only did they not do any harm to Paul, instead they took him in and ministered to him as he, in turn, taught them of the wonderful news of Salvation and freedom in Jesus Christ. In fact, it was because Paul was so broken physically, so ill, that he remained with them until he had preached the entire gospel, Christ crucified, died, buried and risen, all for their forgiveness and restoration to God.

4:14-15

Paul reminds them that even though his physical condition was so bad they had to care for him, no one complained or treated him with contempt or scorn, nor did they loathe or reject him, but instead received him as if he were an angel of God, even as if he represented Christ Himself. (15.) Paul continues by asking them what happened to the Grace given blessings of satisfaction and enjoyment that they once had experienced? He reminds them that they were so concerned about his well-being that, if possible, they would have given him their very own eyes! This is true compassion and caring. In addition, they were very appreciative of Paul sharing the gospel with them and had even congratulated themselves that they were so blessed to have Paul teach them. Paul reminds them of all this to help them realize what they were doing. Sometimes people need to give us a ‘wake-up-call’ about where we are in our spiritual walk when we have fallen back into some sort of legalism.

4:16

Paul boldly asks them if he is now their enemy, just because he comes with the Truth. Paul tells the Truth and does not sugar coat it, nor water it down to spare their ‘feelings’. The Truth is too important to ever dilute or compromise. Only the whole Truth is really the Truth! Adding anything to the gospel makes it a LIE! We need to beware of subtle words or phrases that attempt to twist the Truth of the Gospel in ANY way.

4:17

Then Paul lays it on the line and in frank words tells them what the Judaizers are doing to them. They are ‘brainwashing’ them by trying to zealously court them, doing everything possible to influence them to consider their ‘gospel’. Paul assures them that their purpose is not honorable or worthy or for any good. They want to isolate them from those who oppose them. The Judaizers are trying to win them over to their side and get them to favor them over Paul’s teaching. Note that this is the exact way cults treat people when they try to brainwash them into believing their lies. Cults treat their victims like they are very special; showering them with lots of attention; drawing them into their ‘inner circles’; doing everything they can to isolate them from friends and family and other true Believers. The cult victims will often say, ‘but they like me so much, they can’t be bad!’. The Judaizers used flattery and deception to try to influence the Galatians to come under their control.

4:18-19

Paul assures them that it is always a fine thing to be zealously doing good; provided that it is for a good purpose and done by pure and honorable reasons; and not just when Paul is present. Paul wants them to have the same good concern for the truth of his message whether he is with them or away from them. (19.) Paul calls them his little children, tenderly assuring them that he is suffering pain like birth pangs of a mother suffering before the delivery of her child. He suffers in the same way in trying to deliver them from the false teachers. Then Paul says that he suffers for them until Jesus Christ is completely formed in their lives. This is the Sanctification of the Believer becoming like Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit. We can identify with this struggle to hear, understand and obey the Holy Spirit, so that we become the image of Christ. Jesus wants us to become like Him! Are YOU making that your life-long goal?

4:20

Paul longs to be with them in person so he can personally coax and enlighten them to return to their true belief in salvation by Christ alone. Paul states that he is fearful and perplexed about them. Paul knows that strong Believers would not be so easily persuaded to reject the Truth of Salvation by Christ alone.

4:21-22

Then Paul shifts again and says in effect, “If you really want to be under the Law, do you really understand what the Law says?” Now Paul gives them a quick and brief synopsis of the Jewish history and law. This is intended to help the Galatians to understand exactly what submitting to the law would bring them. He tells them Abraham had two sons one by a slave woman, Hagar, and one by a free woman, Sarah, (his lawful wife!)

4:23-24

The first son born of Hagar (a younger woman) was born according to the flesh, an ordinary birth; the son of the Sarah, (a woman way beyond childbearing age) was born in fulfillment of God’s promise. It was a miracle birth. According to Jewish law the status of the mother affected the status of her son. One was a slave son the other a free son, a fulfillment of God’s promise. (24.) These two women represent two covenants. One Covenant from Mt. Sinai, the Law. Hagar brought forth a slave-son. The law also brings us under slavery.

4:25

Paul now links Hagar and Mount Sinai; saying they are in the same category with the present Jerusalem, in bondage with all those under the Law. Jerusalem was enslaved to Rome and the Law. The reason the Jews were driven out of Jerusalem almost 2000 years ago was because “They knew not the time of their visitation.” See Luke 19:44. Jesus, Himself, gave us the reason! “We have no king but Caesar.” John 19:15. They rejected their Messiah! They even went so far as to proclaim: “His blood be on us and our children.” Matthew 27:25! This was such an important point, that it was spoken, but was not interpreted, in The Passion of The Christ, because of the outcry by the Jews. Most of the Jews remain the children of Hagar, in slavery to sin and death; yet after the Great Tribulation a day of repentance will come. For those who know an unbelieving Jew, who is willing to listen; pray that they would read Chapter 53 of Isaiah; Psalm 22: Psalm 69; the last three chapter of Zechariah; then read the Epistle to the Hebrews, the gospel of Matthew, and pray that the Holy Spirit will reveal the Truth to them. Jesus is their Messiah! If YOU have not read these scriptures, please take the time to read and pray about them; these truths will change your heart and mind!

4:26-27

Sarah corresponds to the New Jerusalem, from above, the mother of all the children of Grace, a free gift of God. Our True home is not here on earth but in Heaven. We are citizens of Heaven! Paul then quotes from Isaiah and applies it to Sarah, the mother of the son of promise, the free son. The future children of Grace will be free from the slavery of sin and death.

4:28-29

Paul again calls them brothers and says we are born of the promise, like Isaac, not like Ishmael. Paul tells them that the child born from faithless connivance, Ishmael; persecuted and despised the son born of the promise. So just as Ishmael, the slave son, persecuted Isaac, the free son. So, it is today, that those who are slaves are persecuting you who are free in Jesus Christ. Notice how the harassment you are experiencing follows the same old pattern! Today we are experiencing the same persecution. The world wants to reject the Christians. We are marginalized; called names and called extremists, right-wingers, we are intolerant, claiming our Way is the only Way to God, unwilling to say that there are many ways to God. The world wants a world without Christians. God will eventually give them what they want.

4:30

Yet the Scripture tells us what to do! Cast out and send away the slave woman and her slave son. Never shall the slave son be heir with the free son. God will not give His inheritance to those who remain the slaves of sin and the law. God told Abraham to drive away Hagar and Ishmael; the slave was not to inherit the promise. The Galatians should then ‘drive away’ and reject the Judaizers and their attempt to subject them to the law. Jesus made it very clear; either we follow Him or the world; we cannot do both. We accept His free gift of Grace OR we choose our own selfish way, which leads to death, eternal death, known as the Second Death. Remember, we can’t have it both ways; we either chose to follow Jesus or Satan!

4:31

So, brothers, we know without a doubt that we who are born again are not children of a slave woman, (the natural), but we are children of the free woman. (The supernatural!) Seek God’s wisdom through the Holy Spirit, to recognize those who seek to enslave you in any form of Legalism. Jesus already paid an unbelievable cost for our freedom! Don’t let the lies of unbelievers wrongly influence you!

As redeemed, adopted children of the Creator of the Universe, why would we ever even consider following the evil, selfish, FOOLISH ways of the World? Think about all you do, say, and even think, are you Truly Believing God? If so, you should be honoring Him in all your actions and thoughts.

Galatians: Chapter 3

God’s Wisdom Versus Man’s Foolishness

Any so-called ‘wisdom’ other than that which is founded in the Truth of God’s Word, is utter foolishness. Be careful to judge all wisdom, learning and Truth, against the True Word of God.

3:1

Paul uses strong and powerful language in calling them foolish! He accuses them of being deceived so badly that it is as if they had been bewitched, or perhaps brainwashed! He reminds them that Jesus Christ had been clearly revealed to them as having been crucified, died, buried, and then risen; ALL on their behalf, for their Eternal Salvation. They knew the Truth of Jesus’ sacrifice for them, yet they had rejected the Cross and instead embraced the Law and legalism. How often we foolishly do the same thing; we ignore the Truth and slip back into a DO and DON’T legalism. Remember, whenever we do this, we declare that Jesus’ death was worthless!

3:2

Paul asks the question of how they had received the Holy Spirit? Was it by obeying ALL the Laws and earning it? Or, was it by hearing the Truth of the Gospel and believing it through God’s Grace? Paul wants them to stop and think it through and search their hearts and minds to come to the obvious conclusion that it is by Grace and Grace alone that they were given Salvation!

3:3

Paul continues by directly demanding how they could be so ridiculously foolish. We would probably equate it with “What kind of idiots are you anyway!” Paul reminds them that they began their spiritual journey with Jesus through the Holy Spirit. They were BORN AGAIN from above; all God’s doing, they knew they had done NOTHING to earn Salvation. So why in the world would they try to become sanctified by trying to ‘earn maturity’ or ‘become more spiritual’ by works of the Law? The Judaizers promoted the idea that the gift of Grace was free, BUT then you had to ‘earn your way through works of the Law’.

This is one of the KEY TRUTHS of this Book: We become the person God meant us to be, through Sanctification; yet this lifelong process is always done through the WISDOM of the Holy Spirit working in us, through Grace. Again, it is Grace alone. Why? So, we won’t brag, take credit, or become prideful. All honor, praise and glory ALWAYS belongs to God, NEVER to us.

3:4-5

Now Paul reminds them of what they have suffered and experienced after becoming Believers. Was all that suffering for Nothing, or In Vain? Paul reminds them of the persecution they experienced because of believing in Jesus Alone. Now would they ‘throw that away’ and live as if they had made a mistake in trusting in Jesus alone? Paul refuses to believe that they would really do this. (5.) Paul continues to ask them hard questions. “If God, who gave them the Gift of the Holy Spirit; Who works His power and might among believers; does He do it because of the Law, or because of their Faith and Trust in God?”

These three crucial questions are asked down through the ages of all Believers: Who saved you? How were you saved? How are you being sanctified? The answer is simple: JESUS, through the Power of the HOLY SPIRIT, who lives and works in us!

Beware of trying to reach ‘perfection’ by our own works. Paul warns them, and us, that if we insist on trying to accomplish sanctification on our own merits, then all Jesus suffered for us, and our own suffering is in vain! Think about it, we have come too far with Jesus to quench or destroy God’s purpose in us. We MUST allow the Holy Spirit through God’s Grace to transform our lives to become more Christ-like. We know the right way to follow His Word; obey the Holy Spirit. Our sanctification is based on faith in what Jesus has done, not on what we can do. If we believe, for even a moment, that our acceptance with God is based on our DOING, we will always fail and feel rejected. But when we truly believe and see that our acceptance is based on what Jesus has done; only then will we be truly free! We want to be Free in Christ; Free to become the person He meant us to be. This Truth is crucial to living a victorious Christian life. Don’t miss it. Only Jesus can transform us, we can’t transform ourselves. Jesus does it one step at a time. He helps us confess our sins, totally repenting, and changing our heart attitude. We are BECOMING sanctified; hearing and obeying the Holy Spirit.

3:6

Now Paul tells them about Abraham. How Abraham believed in and obeyed and trusted and relied on God and God alone. Abrahams total obedience and belief were counted to him for righteousness. Notice all the action verbs. We cannot SAY we believe God, and then ACT as if it depends on us or someone or something else; that is NOT FAITH. Think about Abraham. He was NOT A JEW and Jesus had not even died for his sins yet! Yet, God’s Word tells us he, Abraham, was Justified by his Faith. He believed God would raise Isaac from the dead! He was willing to kill his only son to honor his belief in the One True God!

3:7

Paul conclusions pull it all together by assuring them that the True sons of Abraham, are those who live by Faith. The Judaizers insisted that THEY were the true sons of Abraham, because of their lineage. Yet, God’s Word tells us, we, who have Faith and Belief in Jesus ALONE, are true sons of Abraham.

3:8

The Scriptures foretold, down through the ages, that the Gentiles, including us, would be declared righteous, just as Abraham was declared righteous, in believing the Truth of God’s Word. Gen. 12:3 “In you shall all the nations of the earth be blessed.” Jesus is a descendant of Abraham. So, our Faith in Jesus as our Lord, God and Savior, makes us truly blessed. Notice that this Truth completely negates the Judaizers claim to be ‘sons of Abraham’ because of their keeping the law and their lineage. God always knows the future, and He knew that Gentiles would become Believers centuries after Abraham walked the earth. Another interesting thing is that Paul quotes the Scriptures as if God Himself is doing the speaking. This fact should encourage us to ALWAYS believe the Truth of the Word of God. The Scriptures are inerrant. Always accurate and Truthful.

3:9

So Paul assures the Galatians, and us, that we who are Believers in Faith, are also blessed along with Abraham. The blessing is Justification before Almighty God. All this because Jesus died for our sins!

3:10

Now Paul uses more Scripture to make certain they, and us, NEVER try to depend on the Law to be Justified or self-righteous. ‘ALL’, this means that we too, who depend on the Law, and our attempts to obey the Law, rituals, etc. are under a curse and doomed to failure and destruction. Why? See Deuteronomy 27:26. Because to fail in even one little area is to fail totally and completely. We know that everybody fails sometimes in something, so we are all under the curse of sin. The idea that somehow, we can gain God’s forgiveness, or approval, by our own effort is indeed utter foolishness.

3:11

Now Paul tells them, and us, that is proved beyond any doubt that NO ONE IS JUSTIFIED and declared Righteous before God through the Law. Scripture tells us that the JUST SHALL LIVE BY FAITH! See Hab. 2:4. “Behold, look at the proud man, his soul is not right within him. But the just and righteous man shall live by his Faith and in his faithfulness.”

This KEY TRUTH is so crucial to our understanding and application to our lives that we need to memorize it and repeat it every day of our lives! The person who lives every area of their life, only by Faith in Jesus, is declared Just and in Right Standing with God. How we think, what we say and desire, our attitude, emotions, everything we are, must be by Faith. This Truth shows us that those who are filled with self-pride are NOT upright before God. They can’t be because their self-pride leads them to sin and death. Only those who humble themselves, admitting we are miserable sinners, incapable of saving ourselves, are given the Gift of God’s Grace, which is the free, unmerited Gift of Eternal Life through Jesus, who died on the cross for our sins; so, we might be Justified and made clean before our Holy and Loving God. Wise men follow Jesus; foolish men follow self.

This Truth was made a reality to Martin Luther in 1509. The rest of the story of Martin Luther, who was a Roman Catholic Monk, is he nailed his famous 95 theses to the door of the Wittenberg Castle Church and began a movement we now call the Reformation and gave rise to what is known as Protestantism. This Truth in God’s Word shows us that our Faith is in Christ alone.

3:12

In contrast, the Law does not depend on Faith at all. In fact, it has nothing to do with Faith. Leviticus 18:5 even tells us that “Those who do the things demanded by the Law, shall live by the Law.” But isn’t the Law important? Don’t the Ten Commandments count for something? Maybe both Faith and the Law are needed? No. Because all through the Scriptures we are told ONLY by keeping ALL the Law are we justified. The Law serves only to condemn us. See James 2:10. Think about those commandments; how many have you broken? Thou Shalt Not Murder? Oh you’re innocent? Oh really? Jesus says anyone who hates, dislikes, or even says “you fool” is guilty of breaking this one. So, we admit that we have broken ALL of them. We stand guilty before God, condemned to Hell … unless Jesus is our Savior and Lord.

3:13

Jesus Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law. Jesus alone purchased our freedom from sin and Eternal death in the Lake of Fire. Jesus became cursed, condemned, for us. He became sin to pay the awful price of separation forever from a Holy and Just God. This was predicted thousands of years ago. Deut. 21:23. “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree.” In those times lawbreakers, criminals, were executed, usually, by stoning. Then their dead bodies were displayed on a stake or tree post to show God’s divine rejection. Thus, Jesus’ death by crucifixion was the ultimate curse of God. This incredible sacrifice was substitutionary redemption. Jesus took the penalty of all guilty lawbreakers for all time on Himself. We cannot even begin to comprehend what this means. The agony, pain, humiliation, and horrible physical suffering was not the ultimate price Jesus paid; the most severe price was separation from His Father for the first time in Eternity. This Truth is beyond our imagination; we simply can’t understand or imagine the horrible suffering it brought to Jesus.

3:14

The result of Jesus’ death is that through Jesus, the blessing promised to Abraham, might come upon the Gentiles; so that we, through Faith, might receive the realization of the promise of the Holy Spirit. This means ALL who believe in Jesus through Faith are given the Holy Spirit. We receive salvation first, making us right with God; then the sanctification process comes through the Holy Spirit by Faith, not by works.

3:15

To explain further, Paul uses the example of a Will. This is a human document that stipulates certain future things pertaining to a man’s estate. Once he drafts the Will and signs it and has it ratified (Notarized in our times) then no one can change it. During Paul’s day, the Roman covenant of a Will was unchangeable, thus no one could come and alter the original stipulations. Therefore, Just as God had given Abraham the promise, Covenant Agreement, to bless the Gentiles through his seed, the Messiah, (Jesus); the Law given to the Jews did not change or alter the original Covenant Agreement. Judaizers claimed that the Law was added to the original agreement, but God never did that, and it was His Covenant with Abraham, that promised the seed, (Messiah Jesus), to bring blessings to all believers. No one can change the original Covenant Agreement.

3:16

Paul goes on to clarify and state that to Abraham and his Seed were given the promises, not seeds, plural. That Seed was the Messiah, Jesus. Even Matthew in his first chapter declares Jesus to be the son of David, the Son of Abraham. Then Matthew continues to give us the entire genealogy to make certain we know and believe that Jesus is the promised Messiah! The True fulfillment of the promises to Abraham are all fulfilled in Jesus, not in the Law.

3:17

Now Paul confirms the Truth that the Covenant God made with Abraham, and subsequently reaffirmed with Isaac and Jacob, was made 430 years before the Law was given to Moses on Mt. Sinai. For those who question the time frames, note that the Covenant was reaffirmed with both Isaac and Jacob; so, the 430 years comes after the death of Jacob. The Law could not, and did not, nullify the original Covenant. It simply showed the Jews they were sinners, and needed God’s redemption. All this continued to point to Jesus.

3:18

If the promised inheritance is of the Law, then it is not God’s promise; yet God gave it to Abraham by promise, without the Law. Thus, the Law did not have anything to do with the original promise (Covenant). The promised blessing was to be Justification by Faith. It was given to Abraham, and all those who believe in Jesus, as an unconditional gift. We don’t earn it. Judaizers insist we must keep the Law, and thereby, earn our salvation.

3:19

So what was the purpose of the Law? The Law came to reveal sin and expose men’s guilt because of their sins against the Law. The Law clearly showed men where they had failed. The Law was to guide and direct men on how they should worship God and treat their fellow human beings. The Law served as a tutor and guide. The Law was given to Moses by angels for the benefit of the people. Thus, Moses and the angels served as intermediaries between God and the people. The Law depended on the people keeping it. Notice that after the Law is given, God says “If you keep my words, then I will bless you.” Notice the conditions; IF THEN. We see If NOT, then Bad things will happen. All this was to teach and train the Jews to obey God.

3:20

Yet the Covenant God gave Abraham, and us, was unconditional, given directly to Abraham, no mediator. God alone was responsible for the Covenant being fulfilled. The Jews couldn’t do it, nor can we. Only Jesus could fulfill the promise.

3:21

Is the Law against the promises of God? Absolutely not! If any law could have given us life, the law given to the Jews would have done it. However, we know that the Law could never give life because no one can keep it perfectly. The promises given by the keeping of the law were temporary blessings here on earth. The Law also prepared the way for the coming of the Messiah. Now Jews knew their only hope was the Messiah.

3:22

The Law clearly showed that ALL mankind were sinners. We are imprisoned and held captive by sin, unable to free ourselves. Now we clearly see that the blessing, which was promised through Faith in Jesus, the Messiah, might be given and delivered to all those who believe, trust in, and rely only on Jesus. We can understand that we cannot ever save ourselves, we must give up any attempts to please God by our own efforts and instead humbly accept the free gift of salvation only through Jesus, our Lord, God and Savior.

3:23

Before Faith came, Jews were guarded under the Law. Kept in ‘custody’ or protection, in preparation for the faith that was to be revealed and disclosed. So the Law was designed to show men their sinfulness and guide them to act and behave in obedience to God. The Law also served to protect them from the heathen lifestyles around them. When men ignore God’s law and live according to their own guidelines, depravity, and inhuman behavior results. See Romans 1.

3:24

The Law served as a teacher and guide to bring us to Jesus. The Jewish guardian-tutor was a strict tutor that stayed with the child until puberty. This meant that the teaching and training were to make certain the child adhered to strict Jewish law and avoided any evils of society; they protected the child from being led astray. It was also intended to make certain their moral beliefs and lifestyles were morally pure.

3:25

Now that we have True Faith in Jesus we no longer need, or require, the guardian-tutor of the Law. The Holy Spirit lives within us, constantly leading and guiding us toward continual sanctification. We must seek the wisdom and guidance of the Holy Spirit in our lives; otherwise, we rely on our foolish thoughts and ideas.

3:26

For you are all children of God through Faith in Jesus Christ! As True children of God, we do not need to be treated as sinners under the law; so why would we act like it, by trying to keep the Law? Keep in mind that Satan wants us to think we must keep the law, that way we do not grow under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, because we are trying to do it ourselves. We cannot please God, nor bear fruit for His Kingdom, by doing it ourselves! See how sneaky Satan is?

3:27-28

For if you are truly ‘born again’ as believers and followers of Jesus; then you are united into a spiritual union with Jesus; the Holy Spirit lives within you. We have put on the robe of righteousness given us by Jesus. Avoid putting on the rags of the Law. (28.) We are all one in Jesus Christ. This is the Body of Christ; all believers are one in Jesus. No one is considered better, or more worthy, than another.

3:29

Summing it all up, Paul tells us we belong to Jesus, bought with His blood, and heirs of Abraham and the promises of God. We are the spiritual seed of Abraham. We may not be the genetic seed, a Jew, but we are the spiritual children of Abraham. “All nations shall be blessed through you.” The promise given to Abraham has come true for us!

GRACE ~ God’s eternal love for us, revealed through His sacrifice of Jesus on the cross to pay for our sins; then His incredible gift of the Holy Spirit to live within our hearts, to give us His Power and Wisdom; and to guide and direct us in following God’s perfect will for our lives. Don’t miss this crucial Truth for your own life! Do you want God’s very BEST for your life? Of course, who wouldn’t? Remember you MUST seek God’s WISDOM, not your OWN foolishness!

Galatians: Chapter 2

2:1-2

Then 14 years later, Paul goes back to Jerusalem with Barnabas and Titus. (2.) Paul waited until he had a definite revelation to go to Jerusalem. He then carefully communicated the True Gospel which he preached to the Gentiles. He presented it privately before the leaders, to make certain he was not challenged or discredited in what he had done or planned to do.

2:3-4

His presentation was received and approved; in fact, even Titus, a Greek, was not asked or forced to be circumcised, as some had expected would be required. (4.) They specifically discussed the problem of requiring non-Jews to adhere to Jewish Law; all this because of false believers who had joined their group secretly; to spy out their freedom and liberty that they had in being believers of the True Gospel of Jesus Christ. This group wanted to bring new believers back into the bondage of the Law of Moses.

2:5

Paul assures his readers they did not yield to them, or compromise, in any way for even a moment; realizing that the goal was that the Truth of the Gospel would only continue to be preserved for us by refusing to compromise. This is a great lesson for us; if we hope to keep our Christian Gospel from being watered down, or compromised, with a ‘false gospel’, we must insist on the Truth! The ‘name it and claim it’ type of prosperity ‘gospel’ is no gospel at all, but a false and misleading lie! God NEVER promised us material wealth or an easy life, He promised us Eternal Life!

2:6

The leaders who seemed to be important did not attempt to change or alter the Good News of Salvation that Paul was preaching. These leaders ‘position of importance’ made no difference to Paul; God is not impressed with people who consider themselves important, or better than others. All people are important to God; He is not partial to anyone. Again, we see an important lesson for us; not to be influenced by someone because they are well-known, on T.V. or have some exotic title. Everything we hear must be judged by God’s Word, and ONLY His Word.

2:7-8

These leaders clearly saw that Paul had been entrusted by God to share the Gospel with the Gentiles just as surely as Peter had been chosen to proclaim the Gospel to the Jews. They supported and agreed with Paul. (8.) They all understood and clearly recognized that by God’s Grace Paul had been selected and given spiritual insights by God specifically to teach and train the Gentiles. Just as certainly that James, Peter and John, who were considered the pillars of the Jerusalem church, had been chosen and trained by Jesus, to lead Jews to their Messiah.

2:9

They, James, Peter, and John, then gave Paul and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship with the understanding and commission that they were to go to the Gentiles, and Peter and his group were to teach Jews. God’s Grace alone gave Paul and Peter the Power, motivation, authority, and determination to share the Truth of Salvation to unbelievers as God directed. Are we open to sharing the Gospel with unbelievers God puts before us?

2:10

“They only asked that we remember the poor.” Paul assures his readers that he already had a heart for the poor and needy and was more than eager to help them. We should also have such a heart for the poor in our community. Are we doing anything to help the poor and hungry? Every eight minutes a child dies because of starvation. Your local area has people who are in desperate need of food in these hard times. Are you doing anything to help them? We should give generously, in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus.

2:11-13

Yet when Peter came to Antioch, Paul confronted him face to face regarding his hypocrisy. Peter himself admits he made a mistake and should NEVER have compromised the Truth to placate the Jews. (12.) Prior to the arrival of certain Jews from Jerusalem, Peter had been living and eating with Gentiles; yet for fear of ‘offending’ the Jews who had arrived from Jerusalem, he left the Gentile believers and associated, and ate, only with Jews. He did this out of fear of the circumcision party. (13.) Then the rest of the Jews saw his example and they too concealed their true convictions and acted insincerely, with the result that even Barnabas was influenced by their hypocrisy. One bad example can influence an entire church and lead them astray. We must be careful not to be led astray and say; well, it’s no big deal, everyone else seems to think it is o.k. This type of hypocrisy and subserviency leads to compromise and destroys the Truth.

2:14

Yet Paul says that as soon as he saw they were not honest and straightforward about living up to the Truth of the Gospel, Paul challenged Peter before everybody present. “If you, though born a Jew, can live as you have been living like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how do you dare now to urge and practically force the Gentiles to comply with the ritual of Judaism and live like Jews?” Notice Paul clearly faces the issues at hand, not trying to minimize the truth or damage hypocrisy causes.

2:15-16

Paul says, “Even though you and I are Jews by birth and not Gentile sinners, yet we know that a man is justified, and counted righteous and in right standing with God not by works of the Law, but only through Faith and absolute reliance on and adherence to and trusting in Jesus Christ, as our Messiah, the Anointed One. We have believed in and on Christ Jesus in order to be justified by Faith in Christ and NOT by works of the Law. For we absolutely cannot be justified by any observance of the ritual of the Law given by Moses. By keeping legal rituals and by works, no human being can EVER be justified and declared righteous and be in right standing with God!” (See Psalm 143: 2) We know that we cannot please God by self-improvement. We believe and Trust only in Jesus as our Savior and Lord, not trying to add anything to make ourselves appear ‘good’ to God. What foolishness!

2:17

“Yet if in our desire and endeavor to be justified in Christ and put in right standing with God solely through Jesus, we have shown ourselves sinners and been convicted of sin, does that make Jesus Christ a contributor to our sin? Of course, not! Don’t even consider the thought!” Notice that none of us are perfect; yet we can’t blame Jesus because we still sin; He isn’t responsible for our actions; we have free will and have chosen to ignore the Holy Spirit living within us. Remember, if people accuse Christians of not being perfect, agree with them; we aren’t perfect, only FORGIVEN!

2:18

“For if I, or anyone else who have taught that the observance of the Law of Moses is not essential to being justified by God, should change and teach or intimate that now it IS essential; I have torn down what I had taught and believed and prove myself a sinner and transgressor.”

2:19

Paul assures us that he worked himself to death trying to live up to the Jewish law and please God, but it didn’t work, because it is impossible! So Paul quit being a “law-man” and chose to be ‘God’s man’. The Holy Spirit within him enabled Paul to be a reflection of Jesus.

2:20

Paul says he identified himself so completely with Jesus that he had been crucified with Christ. His self-pride and ego were no longer in control, only the Holy Spirit was in control of his life. The life Paul now lived was in True Faith, he completely reliance on, and trusted in, the Holy Spirit to guide, direct, sustain and empower him. Why? Because Paul clearly recognized that his sin had put Jesus on the cross and Jesus had chosen to die for him while he was yet a sinner. Because of that great sacrifice of Love, for Paul’s eternal life, he would NEVER turn back. Oh, that we would have the same kind of strong faith and belief and have such an attitude of gratitude and recognition of what Jesus has done for us. Yet, we don’t really ‘get it’ because if we did, we would be like Paul, totally given over to the Holy Spirit within us. Totally sold out for Jesus Christ.

2:21

“Therefore I, Paul, do not treat God’s gracious gift as something of minor importance, and by so doing defeat it’s very purpose. I do not set aside and invalidate, frustrate and nullify the Grace of God. Why would I give up and abandon my personal relationship with God through Jesus? If rule-keeping legalism, religious rules and the like could make me righteous, then Jesus Christ died for no purpose and in vain; His death was unnecessary and a waste.” Note that this would mean that God made a mistake! We know that God NEVER makes mistakes; all He does is for our Eternal Good!

Pray about your attitude and actions; do your actions and attitude reflect your appreciation and thankfulness of God’s Grace and Mercy? If not, what is keeping you trapped in sin? Remember, you are NOT FREE, if you are trapped in sin! Pray now to accept your forgiveness from God through the death and resurrection of Jesus. It is time to put away your own selfishness, pride, arrogance, and self-sufficiency and rely on Jesus as your Lord, God and Savior. Thinking you can ‘do it yourself’ or be ‘in control’ of your life is an illusion! God is in control, you are only able to work, pray, live and breathe because of the Power of God. Think carefully about it: Even your body, mind and soul were created by God, and are a GIFT to you. You do NOT even OWN yourself!! You must choose to crucify those fleshly actions that drag you down into sin and misery. Any other action or belief is pure foolishness!

Galatians: Chapter 1

1:1-2

Paul identified himself as an apostle, sent by Jesus Christ Himself, not by any man or men. Paul clearly identifies Jesus as the Messiah whom God the Father raised from the dead. Paul deliberately emphasizes Jesus’ resurrection as this Truth is crucial to the message of the Gospel. Jesus’ victory over death itself is our True Hope. (2.) Paul includes all those who work with him in sharing this message to the churches of Galatia.

1:3

Paul asks for, and assures them, of God’s Grace being to and for them; as well as Peace from God the Father and from our Lord Jesus Christ. Notice all the action verbs for Grace and Peace being sent to them to be received by the churches. Grace alone brings God’s True Peace. If we do not have peace in our lives, could it be that we have ignored or rejected God’s Grace? No one can have True Peach without God’s Grace. If you really know the Grace of Jesus, you will know Peace. No Grace = No Peace. We must incorporate God’s Grace in our lives, every day; this enables us to experience the peace of God.

1:4-5

Jesus willingly gave Himself up to atone, pay the price of death, for our sins – to save and sanctify us. Here we see Paul’s careful presentation of Christ’s work on our behalf. Notice Save and Sanctify are separate works! Why did Jesus do this? In order to rescue and deliver us from this present evil and wicked age and world order – all this is in accordance with the will and purpose of God our Father. Jesus is the channel of God’s Grace. The purpose of Grace: to deliver us from evil. The source of God’s Grace: The perfect will of God our Father. (5.) To whom be Glory for all Eternity! This is the reason for God’s Grace, to bring Glory to God forever! Grace excludes all human effort (II Timothy 1:9 & Rom. 11:6)

1:6

Paul is shocked and astonished that they are so quickly removing themselves, turning renegade and deserting Him who called them into the Grace, the unmerited, unearned favor, of Jesus Christ the Messiah, and that they are transferring their belief and allegiance to a false gospel. Yielding themselves to lies and abandoning Truth.

1:7

Another gospel is really a perverted lying ‘gospel’ those who lie to you are troubling and confusing and bewildering you with lies. They are distorting the Truth of the True Gospel of Jesus our Messiah. The Truth of the Gospel is based on God’s Grace, NOT works – or “earning” salvation. That insidious lie denies the NEED of Christ’s death on the cross! These people are master deceivers, clever, bewitchers. False teachers always advocate “something else” besides Jesus’ death on the cross. Special rules, laws, requirements, etc. Beware of any such false teachers, pastors, or whatever they claim to be. How can you be sure you have accepted God’s Grace? True Grace means the death of SELF PRIDE. Is pride dead in you? Are you prideful in ANY area of your life? Do you take credit or “glory” for what God has done? Be careful and be honest – your Sanctification requires you to die to self (pride) and live in Christ’s Grace. There will be no boasting in Heaven – the only man-made things in Heaven are the scars on Jesus. All through the bible from Genesis to Revelation, there is ONLY one True Gospel.

1:8

WARNING! If anyone, even an angel from Heaven, would preach any other gospel than the Truth of Jesus’ death on the cross and resurrection, all for our sins, let that person or angel be accursed. The Greek is anathema, meaning to be doomed to eternal destruction and punishment – the lake of fire! Remember, Jesus Himself warns us that Satan will disguise himself as an “angel of light” performing “miracles” in order to deceive us. Today there are thousands who try to deceive us. Beware of those who claim special powers from God such as a “prophetic word of God” etc.

1:9-12

Paul repeats his curse of eternal damnation on anyone who would dare teach or claim a gospel contrary to God’s gift of Grace through Jesus. Remember the acronym for GRACE: God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense. Our salvation and sanctification are only through God’s Grace. Jesus sacrificed Himself for us. (10.) Paul assures them that he does not try to win the favor of men, but only to obey God. He does not try to please men, only God. He confirms that he is a bondservant of Jesus the Messiah; never seeking popularity with men. These claims assure them of his sincerity and truthfulness. Paul points out that seeking or needing human approval is unbalanced behavior and will quench the Holy Spirit. Trying to please people and God results in disaster. (11. & 12.) Paul affirms that the Gospel he taught to them is NOT a human invention but came directly from Jesus the Messiah. Paul was chosen and ordained directly by Jesus (Acts 9:1-22).

1:13-14

Paul continues, telling us: You have heard of my conversion from being a dedicated, even fanatical Jew. How I persecuted and wasted the church, furiously and extensively doing everything with fanatical zeal to destroy and kill all who followed Christ. (Note the term WASTED is back in use today meaning to kill someone to get rid of them; in the drug culture it means to destroy self). (14.) Paul reminds them that he was the most strict Jew and was more zealous than any other Jew.

1:15-16

Yet God chose Paul and set him apart, even before he was born, and called him by His Grace. Paul acknowledges that before he was born, God had selected him. His background as a well-educated Jew, a Roman citizen and his Greek culture – all these were to be used by God for God’s purposes. God also has a plan for your life, all your background, training, education, everything about you will be used by God for His perfect plan for your life. All God’s purposes will be fulfilled ONLY when you are serving Jesus according to His Plan for your life. God’s wonderful Grace is His favor and blessing for you. Are you missing it? (16.) God was pleased to reveal His Son in Paul, so that Paul might preach Jesus to the Gentiles. Paul did not discuss his calling with men but realized in his soul and spirit that God had revealed His only Son as the Messiah, the one true Son of God. (Note that it was not until Paul’s conversion that Jesus was preached as the Son of God) God revealed to Paul that Jesus was His Son! Why? So Paul would proclaim Jesus to the non-Jewish world – showing Paul he was to preach Jesus to the Gentiles. Remember, Paul wanted to preach to the Jews, not the Gentiles.

1:17

Paul did not go to Jerusalem to the Apostles before him, but went instead to Arabia and then returned to Damascus. Why? Why didn’t he join the other Apostles? (II Corth. 12) We must assume that God directed him to Arabia. Then, when Paul obeyed, God caught him up (Raptured) Paul into Heaven, where he heard and saw things beyond his human ability to convey them, or was simply not permitted to tell anyone of the specifics. To constantly remind Paul that God had given him this experience, he did nothing to deserve it, God gave him a thorn in the flesh. Paul would never, ever again boast.

1:18

Then after staying in Damascus (3 years) Paul did go to Jerusalem and met and stayed with Peter 15 days. We might wonder why God is giving us these time frames. (19.) Paul did not see any of the other Apostles except James, the Lord’s brother. Notice that James is here called an Apostle, yet we know he was not a believer until after Jesus died and rose from the dead. Why did Paul meet with James? Perhaps for further assurance for James? Or? We do know that James wrote the Epistle of James.

1:20-22

Now Paul emphasizes the Truth of his testimony by stating that they, his readers, (including us), should carefully note and take heed of his words as Paul states he is writing as if he were standing before the bar of God! (21.) Paul tells his readers that he then went into the regions of Syria and Cilicia. (22.) Paul says he was still unknown by sight to the churches, believers, in Judea, the country surrounding Jerusalem.

1:23-24

The believers in those areas had heard of Paul, but only that “he who persecuted us in the past is now preaching the same Faith in Jesus that he once tried to destroy.” This fact alone should convince anyone of his conversion. (24.) And they, the believers, Glorified God because of Paul. They were all amazed and knew this change in Paul was a direct miracle from God Himself. Is there a change in you that causes others to Glorify God because they realize God has changed you?

You and I are strongly warned to beware of those who teach anything that is contrary to the Word of God. So how would we know if anything was false teaching? ONLY by being a diligent student of the Word of God yourself. You must NEVER just believe what anyone is teaching without carefully checking what they teach against the Word of God. We are responsible for knowing the Truth and Obeying the Truth; God’s eternal Word. As you carefully study, and apply, these Truths; and future Truth the Holy Spirit reveals to you, you will be able to discern false teaching from God’s Truth. God always wants what is BEST for you. To get His Best, you MUST know His Word, and apply it to your life! Remember, your Eternal Rewards all depend on knowing and obeying the Truth of God’s Eternal Word.

Galatians: Introduction

Overview and Brief Summary

Galatians is often characterized as a “short version of Romans”. True Christianity is A Way of life. Jesus said, “I am The Way, The Truth and The Life”. We are inspired to live as His followers, secure in knowing we can Trust Him to bring us to Sanctification and Glory!

The Book of Romans is considered by most scholars as the most profound piece of writing in existence. To give yourself more insight into Galatians, you may want to consider reading the Book of Romans before beginning your study. The Theme of Romans is the Grace of God Revealed. We learn of God’s Righteousness, our iniquity (sin) and God’s gracious solution (remedy) through Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross for our redemption (Salvation). This is God’s GRACE, God’s Riches at Christ’s Expense! Our entire culture is influenced by the Truth of this epistle. Romans is the wonderful cornerstone of our understanding of God’s unbelievable Mercy and Grace. We know and are confident that salvation is only the beginning ~ SANCTIFICATION then becomes our lifelong goal. We are hopeful and optimistic in knowing that balancing and prioritizing our lives to include daily Bible Study will allow us to reap a more dependable, cheerful, joyful, and peaceful Christ-centered satisfying life.

The emphasis in Galatians is on God’s Grace, which is His unmerited favor; versus Legalism; which is Keeping God’s Rules. Often Legalism also includes keeping man-made rules. Galatians will encourage us to be cheerfully expectant in cooperating with the Holy Spirit to attain the joyful, faith-filled life Jesus planned for us. All of this will become clearer as we see God’s Word revealed through our careful and diligent study. Jesus wants us to have more Peace, Love, Joy, Satisfaction and Success in our lives.

This book assures us that God can use anyone who seeks Him with their whole heart, mind, and soul!
Galatians is our guide to Freedom and revival of biblical Truth. It is the bedrock of spiritual freedom and responsibility. True freedom always has responsibilities.

Galatians gives us Truth in teachings on Christian Freedom which separates Christianity from Judaism. This book is the cornerstone of evangelism. It emphasizes and clarifies our salvation is by God’s Grace alone + NOTHING! We cannot add to God’s Grace or do anything to “earn” our salvation. Lest any man should boast or pride himself into falsely thinking “I’m pretty good – I did such and such” Galatians eliminates any such prideful and erroneous thoughts or claims.

Salvation frees us from the penalty of sin, which is Hell and separation from God, forever. God’s Grace enables us to become Sanctified – becoming more Christ-like in our attitude, actions and thinking. Galatians is a serious warning to us regarding cults that teach another “truth” which is, in reality, a LIE that denies that salvation is through Jesus alone. Cults nearly always deny Jesus is the one and only True Son of God and God Himself, the second Person of the Holy Trinity.

Most scholars believe that Paul wrote this epistle to the southern Galatian churches, namely Antioch of Piscidia, Iconium, Lystra and Derbe (see Acts 13 and 14 for additional information).

For Paul it all began on the Damascus Road, and there was never a road back. We all need to take the same road: any other road leads to “another gospel”. Paul spoke of his conversion in Hebrew before the crowd at the Temple in Jerusalem (Acts 22:1-21 and Act 9:1-19) and before King Agrippa in Caesarea (Acts 26:1-32). Before both friends and enemies, he stated that his very conversion was the greatest proof of his discipleship and the truth of the doctrine that man is saved by Faith and not by works.

Paul spent some years in Arabia, presumably being trained by God. He returns to Damascus, yet former friends now make the fiercest enemies. A plot to kill him causes him to seek shelter in Jerusalem (Act 9:26-28; Gal. 1:18)
After a short visit of two weeks, enemies again try to kill him; this time believers whisk him away to Caesarea where he boarded a ship to his hometown of Tarsus (Acts 9:26-31; Gal 1: 21-24).

In Paul’s first missionary journey (Acts 13:1-14:28) he traveled even further west. The church in Antioch was growing tremendously and Barnabas was sent to recruit Paul from Tarsus. After a brief visit to bring food to the believers in Jerusalem, the first mission odyssey began. However, despite much progress, Jewish opposition began. “Unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the believers.” (Acts 14:2-20.)

The “Legal men- Old Testament Christians” were called “Judaizers” which means to be or live like a Jew. These opponents of the early Christian missionaries were called Judaizers because of their belief that Gentiles must live like Jews, following the Mosaic Law and Jewish customs and traditions. These Judaizers believed that in order for the wicked Gentiles; who believed in false gods, committed immorality, drunkenness, murder, etc.; to be saved, they had to become Jews first, then they could “qualify” to become Christians. Often, we do the same thing, thinking we must “clean up our act” first, then become a believer. Paul makes it clear that Christianity was NOT an addition to Judaism, but rather the fulfillment of the intent of the law. Faith in Jesus makes the believer a New Creation; with the Holy Spirit living within the believer. The JUST shall live by Faith (Rom.1:17) The Just SHALL LIVE by Faith (Gal. 3:11) The Just shall live BY FAITH (Heb. 10:38).

Grace is God’s answer to man’s pride: A believer does good works as a natural response to God’s Grace. Grace enables believers to obey God and produce good works. The law shows us our sin and need of God’s Grace. Grace makes us Free! Legalism always turns us back to the law: do this, don’t do that. Rather than being the person God intended us to be. We become more like Jesus as we allow Grace to transform us into His image and likeness.

Paul’s letter is key to keeping True Christianity free to anyone who would accept the Truth of the Gospel and the Joy and Freedom that comes from accepting Jesus as Lord, God and Savior. Anything else perverts the Truth and destroys True Grace, and True Freedom!

Ephesians: Chapter 6

Summary:

  1. Believers have been called to be God’s children only by His Mercy and Grace.
  2. We have been raised from the dead and reconciled to God!
  3. Christ is victorious over Satan.
  4. We are called to live in Love and unity.
  5. True Believers are the Bride of Christ.

6:1

Children are commanded to obey their parents in the Lord. (Parents must be God’s representative to their children; they are not to use or manipulate their children for evil.) Obeying parents is Just and Right. Parents have a serious moral obligation to bring up their children in a godly manner. (See Col 3:20) Rebellion to parents brings disaster. (See Isa 3:4, 12; Tim 3:1) When children rule the parents it is an indication of degeneracy. Haven’t we all seen families where an out-of-control, or spoiled, child rules the household and literally controls the parents?

6:2-3

Honor your father and mother; this means to esteem and value them as precious. This is the first commandment, with a promise. (given in Exodus 20) This commandment is the fifth of the Ten commandments, yet it is the First of the ‘Relationship’ commandments of how we treat one another. (The first four deal with our relationship with God). vs. 3. Now the promise that God gives when children honor father and mother: That it may be well with you and that you may live long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you. God promises obedient children, that honor their father and mother, great blessings of long and prosperous lives. Should we continue to honor parents when we become adults? Absolutely! As children, we needed our parents. As parents age they need the love and appreciation of their children; they may even need assistance in life. God carefully planned the family structure for the benefit and blessings of all of us. We are to work together to love, help and nurture one another. To ignore or reject His plan for the family unit causes great pain, disaster, and failure in life. Our current situation in America is largely due to the breakdown in the family unit and moral decline. Sin always robs us. Disobedient children will suffer. Sin brings pain, suffering, danger, and death. Disobedience to one’s parents is rebellion against God.

6:4

Fathers do not irritate and exasperate your children so that they become angry and resentful (wrath). Teach and train them with tender love and patience in the discipline, counsel and admonition of the Lord. Notice that patience and love are the key attributes and attitudes needed by godly parents. Warning: Indulging a child makes spiritual growth for the child extremely difficult. We are given many examples: David pampered Absalom ~ with disastrous results. Eli failed to discipline his sons ~ their deaths resulted. Jacob showed favoritism to Joseph ~ the entire family suffered greatly. Our family relationships are the most important and rewarding AND at the same time are very challenging, yet always worth the effort. Never give up on your family members ~ pray for them daily; sometimes that is all you can, or should, do.

This next section deals with Slaves and Masters ~ in our modern culture these Truths would apply to Employees and Employers.

6:5

Servants, (in our day this would refer to Employees, and also include Christian volunteers); Obey and respect the directives of your Master, this means bosses, or leaders; as well as have an attitude and motive to do your best job and seek to please your Employers, or leaders (as the case may be). We are to work as though we are working directly for Jesus. If we are working for Jesus, what kind of effort should we put forth?

6:6

We are not to do a ‘good job’ only when we are being watched or monitored, but we are to seek to give our very best work as a servant of Jesus Christ. We are to seek to do the Will of God from our born-again hearts. Our goal should be to please God, not men. Think about how diligently you would work if you owned the company, or the project was for your own home, vehicle, or for your own benefit. What kind of effort would you put forth? Now you can see the difference in your attitude. Any other attitude is being dishonest; and not doing the work for Jesus. Be honest with yourself.

6:7

We are to be working and serving with such enthusiasm that we are doing a superior job; just as IF we are working directly for Jesus to please Him. Even if the boss is unreasonable and unfair. If the boss is abusive, cruel, and heartless, it may be best to seek other employment, or make the matter known, with love and honest tactfulness, to the owner or the Pastor. God doesn’t want us to suffer needlessly.

6:8

All the time we are working, or serving, we know that the Truth is that whatever good things we do for Jesus Christ will bring great rewards from God. We honor Jesus now, and cause others to see the good that comes from a true servant of Jesus. Our true rewards will be eternal ~ yet we know that those rewards are the most valuable! Remember, they last forever. (Remember African Missionary & Teddy Roosevelt’s Safari coming home to America.)

6:9

Now comes the commands for the Masters, employers, and Christian leaders. Treat your servants, that means employees, respectfully, honestly, and fairly, all the time remembering that you have a Master in Heaven, God, that you must answer to for all your actions and treatment of your servants, or employees. Never be abusive or threatening, using violence or evil toward those servants, or employees, God has placed you over. God will demand an answer for all your words and actions. Try to be both kind and generous.

Now the next section deals with the current battle we are in. We are in a desperate life and death struggle. A vicious warfare situation, even if we fail to realize it. If we don’t recognize that we are in this life-and-death struggle, we are doomed to failure. (Review information of Satan, his origin, agenda and destiny)

6:10

In conclusion, or, in summary; Paul tells us to get prepared! Be strong in the Lord. We are to first draw our strength from our union with our Lord Jesus through the Holy Spirit. We are to seek to be empowered by Him, not trusting ourselves, only trusting in God. Remember, there is no limit to the Power and Might of the Holy Spirit, we have finite limits!

6:11

Now we are told to ‘put on’ God’s whole Armor, this is the heavy armor for the Soldier which God supplies; so that we would be prepared to do battle with the enemy. We are now in enemy territory here on earth, and we must know God’s word so well that we can stand up to all the deceitful and clever strategies of the devil. Our Armor should be on all the time. Remember, Satan and his demons are not going to warn us when they attack. Ever been blindsided by the enemy?

6:12

We are clearly and sternly warned that we are not fighting against just physical opponents, (we are really contending against all the fallen angels and demons; the evil spirits who are currently the world rulers of this present age of darkness and spiritual wickedness). Open your eyes and look around, see the increase in our world of immorality, witchcraft, and those who deal with wicked spirits (demons). These are real entities who want to destroy us! Never, Never underestimate the power and relentless intent of the enemy; our complete and utter destruction is their goal.

6:13

Therefore, this is crucial to your survival, you MUST put on all God’s complete Armor every single day; so that you would be able to resist and stand your ground. We must rely on God’s Word, His Armor, His power, and strength, always seeking Him when being attacked by, or confronting evil. We must never rely on our own power and strength. If you start your day without prayer, and seeking God’s Will for the day, you are without your Armor!

6:14

Stand strong, making certain the belt of Truth is around you and have on the breastplate of righteousness. The Roman belt was 6-8 inches wide, and all the body armor and weapons were attached to it. Truth is when the Word and Deed are one. The ultimate Truth is the fulfillment of God’s promises in His Messiah, Jesus. Jesus said, “I am Truth”. Why a breastplate of righteousness? We must guard our heart (the seat of our righteousness as ‘born again believers’) and the breastplate protected the heart and vital organs. So, the very first thing is to be surrounded by God’s Truth, revealed in His Word. Therefore, DAILY BIBLE STUDY is so important! Next, we must guard our hearts with that Truth.

6:15

We are to be ready with our feet firmly planted in the Truth of the Gospel given in God’s Word. If the soldier fell, he was usually killed, so he needed to be sure-footed; and so do we. We need to be prepared to give an answer to those who challenge our claim of the good news of the Gospel of peace. (See Isaiah 52:7) Anyone ever say to you. “Oh, I don’t believe in that stuff!”? Did you give them a strong loving answer of Truth? Just because someone doesn’t believe something, doesn’t mean it’s not true. Many people believed the world was flat; that the sun revolved around the earth, etc. none of it was true. Today people believe lies like there are many ways to Heaven; there is no hell, no Satan, no punishment in the afterlife, there is no God. All of these are lies. God gives us the opportunity to tell these people the Truth.

6:16

Now, above all, take your strong shield of saving Faith, which will give you the power to quench all the flaming missiles of the wicked. Those flaming missiles are often vile, hateful words attempting to overpower you and cause you to give up in defeat.

6:17

Now you must take your helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. The helmet protected the head; we must remember in our brains that we are Saved; no one can take us out of the hand of God, no one, ever! We know we have eternal security; we need not fear the enemy. The enemy wants to intimidate us and cause us to fear; we must remember we are the protected, guarded, born again child of the All-Powerful Living God, Creator of the Universe! Now we must rely on the Holy Spirit to give us the wisdom, power and necessary words and actions to win against the enemy.

6:18

Now the most powerful thing we can do ~ Pray in the Spirit of God. Pray, seeking the Holy Spirit to guide our thoughts and prayers to bring about victory. Praying at all times. Interceding on behalf of all the saints. We are to seek and ask our prayer warriors to support us. We are to persevere by honoring God, confessing our own sins, humbling ourselves and turning from them, praising, and thanking God. Prayer is the most powerful thing we can do.

6:19-20

Now Paul asks them to pray for him, that he would be given the freedom to speak boldly (with the power of the Holy Spirit) the Truth of the mystery of the Gospel. Keep in mind that as he wrote this, he was chained to guards day and night. So, it would seem that the guards were probably the ones he was speaking to regarding the Gospel. Paul continues to ask them to also pray that he would continue to be an Ambassador for the Good News of Jesus Christ; even though he was in chains in prison. Paul believed that he must preach, no matter where he was, or what the circumstances were. Do we make sharing the Truth of God’s Word our priority, even when we are in terrible circumstances? Have any of us been chained in a filthy dungeon, knowing we were going to die, as Paul was? It can’t get any worse.

6:21

Now Paul wants them to be certain that this letter comes from him, so he tells them he is sending Tychicus, a fellow bondslave. Tychicus is also mentioned in Acts 20:4; 2 Tim. 4:12; and Titus 3:12. This way they would know this was a genuine letter from Paul because Paul wanted them to understand these mysteries.

6:22-23

Then Paul says something remarkable; that he is sending them Tychicus to console, cheer, encourage and strengthen their hearts. So that they might be strong enough to follow Paul’s example of leading others to Jesus. Can you imagine, instead of seeking sympathy or asking them to pray for his release from prison and his suffering to end; he tells them he is concerned about them! This reminds us that when Jesus was facing death, He prayed for His disciples for strength, courage, and faith. (23.) Then Paul gives God’s blessings to them by saying “Peace to the Believers who walk with Love and faith;” asking that this comes from God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ. Notice that the blessings were only for Believers “who walk with Love and Faith”.

6:24

Paul ends with God’s Grace for all those that love our Lord Jesus Christ in Truth and sincerity. Amen, so may it be. Notice again that Grace was to be with those that “Love our Lord Jesus Christ in Truth and sincerity.” We must live our Faith, not just say it.

Summary: Paul’s letter to the Ephesians reveals incredible Truths not revealed before. He sets forth our position of authority in Christ; how deeply God loves us with His UNCONDITIONAL LOVE; as well as the purpose for us as Believers. We are to lovingly share the Truth of Jesus, as Lord, God and Savior. We are warned to be prepared for the lies of the enemy, yet always being strong and courageous, in Christ Jesus. The phrase “in Christ Jesus” is used repeatedly to remind us we cannot do anything successfully without being in the Will of God through the power of the Holy Spirit. And that is our secret to True Success in life, being in the WILL OF GOD! We pray you will reflect often on this book of Ephesians, and prayerfully seek to apply God’s Word faithfully to your life. May God richly grant you His Shalom.

Ephesians: Chapter 5

Chapter Summary:

  1. We Believers have been called to be God’s children only by His Grace.
  2. We have been raised from the dead and reconciled to God!
  3. Christ is victorious over Satan.
  4. We are called to live in Love and unity.

5:1

THEREFORE, as beloved, forgiven children of God, we are to be followers, that is imitators, of Jesus Christ. How are we to be followers? As Jesus forgave us, we are to forgive others, in the same way. What way? Merciful, graciously, completely ~ even when they don’t deserve forgiveness! Difficult? Yes. Yet God loves us just as He loves His Son, Jesus. So then, we must love in the same way ~ forgiving others; that is true love. Remember, Love is NOT an ‘emotional feeling’, true Love is a CHOICE. God chose to Love us, and we must make a choice to Love others, whether we “feel” like it or not.

5:2

Walk in Love; meaning we live a life totally immersed in God’s Love. As we receive His wonderous sacrificial, forgiving Love into our own lives, we are then able to love others with a ‘sacrificial love’. Are you loving with ‘sacrificial Love’, or just plain ‘human love’? Jesus gave Himself for us, He died on the cross to give us His sacrificial Love. Pray and ask God how to love others, especially family, with sacrificial Love. Remember, Jesus never asked for anything back for His Love ~ He gave it to us. If you expect “something back” for your Love, it is not True Godly Love, it is just plain selfish human love.

5:3

But, (whenever we see this word, it is usually a warning, or admonition), immorality and all impurity, that is, lustful, wasteful living; or any selfishness or greediness, must not even be thought of you as you are the saints of God. Our lives, thoughts and actions must reflect pure, holy, generous, and Loving lives. If we are True followers of Jesus, our lives will testify of Him. St. Francis of Assisi said: “Preach Jesus, and if you must, use words”; meaning our lives should reflect Jesus in everything we do and say, even our tone of voice and smile should be honoring to Jesus.

5:4

Paul goes on to warn us that our very speech should constantly be grounded in obedience to Jesus. We are told to avoid any filthy, obscene, indecent words or speech. Never speaking sinful or silly and corrupt speech. Our speech should be continually thankful and appreciative of our blessings from God. When we thank God for His Love and protection, we naturally avoid complaining and grumbling.

5:5

Be certain of this Truth: No whoremonger, that is anyone who practices sexual impurity in their thoughts or acts; no covetous person, who is also an idolater, lusting after, and desiring for the possessions of others, having a greedy attitude; will ever have any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Notice that it refers to ‘inheritance’ in the kingdom. A Believer who falls into this type of sin(s) will lose their inheritance! Only by being completely satisfied with what God has given us can we avoid covetousness. These two sins are often tied together: impurity and covetousness ~ and both point to us as idolaters. Why? Because we worship the creation rather than the Creator! (See Romans 1:25) A True Believer demonstrates the reality of his Faith in Christ Jesus by his obedient life. There are many professors of Christianity, yet few Possessors of Christianity. Are you just a Professor or a True Possessor?

Men call immorality a ‘sickness’, yet God clearly calls it sin. Men condone immorality, yet God condemns it. Man’s answer is psychoanalysis; yet God insists only regeneration, through His forgiveness, can remove sin. Sadly, in our world today, evil people even promote immorality.

5:6

The world tries to deceive us regarding impurity. Yet Paul tells us that because of ‘these things’ comes the wrath of God upon those who disobey. Men insist that immorality is just a ‘sickness’; or worse, that it is o.k.; yet God consistently tells us it is a terrible sin. Men often condone immorality, yet God always condemns it. Man’s answer is psychoanalysis, or just ignore it; yet God insists only regeneration can remove sin. Sexual sin slowly destroys our very soul and identity. Notice that God caused 24,000 men to be slain in Numbers 25:1-9 because of fornication. God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah because of homosexuality. Venereal disease: AIDS, etc. are all the results of sin; and perhaps, God’s judgments. (See Rom. 1:27; Heb. 13:4; Rev. 21:8)

5:7

Therefore, Paul warns them, and us, not to indulge ourselves, as unbelievers do, in any of these sins. Avoid sin, stay away from sin, run from sin; Paul uses many terms to give us ample warning. The Truth is that the only way to stay FREE FROM SIN is to AVOID IT! When we commit sin as a Believer, we dishonor the name of Jesus; it wrecks and ruins our lives and our testimony and invites retribution and punishment. We harm ourselves, our family, friends, and even the body of Christ, in ways that we do not even know. Have nothing to do with any kind of evil!

5:8

Paul now reminds us that we were once trapped in darkness. But now we are freed from the power of sin and are in God’s Light and Truth. Since we are in His light, we must live our lives as children of light. We know that Jesus lives with us (since we are indwelt by the Holy Spirit). Since God is with us 100% of the time, then simple reasoning will tell us He knows everything we think, do, and speak. So why not seek His direction in EVERYTHING. Those who say, “I don’t want to bother God with petty things.” have no concept of Who God is. He is everywhere, all the time, so how can you “bother” Him? Simple, you can’t. God is listening 24 hours a day for us to call on Him. Can you go before God too much? Of course not! Begin your day with God when you first wake up. All life should be a prayer. Pray all day long. Every second you decide it should be in the Will of God. Pray first, then speak or act. Pray as you go about your routine activities seeking God’s direction, wisdom, and guidance. The more you focus on God, the more certain you will be of staying in His Will.

Now Paul begins another dissertation on the Fruit of the Spirit ~ The RESULT of living as children of Light!

5:9

For the Fruit of the Spirit of living in the Light of God’s Word, is GOODNESS: an inclusive term for all moral excellence; RIGHTEOUSNESS: having integrity in all our dealings with God and men; TRUTH: Honesty, integrity, and reality. Our word and deeds always become one. Do you keep your word? Always? No? Why not? (See Matt. 5:16; and John 3:20-21)

5:10

Our very lives must prove what is right and acceptable to our Lord and Savior. Do we seek to live in a way, day by day, moment by moment, that is pleasing to Jesus? We must learn to be constant and continuous proofs of what is good and righteous. Before planning anything, ask Jesus what He thinks of your plans? Perhaps we need to seek His guidance and direction before plunging ahead with “our wills” instead of seeking “His Will”.

5:11-12

NEVER, NEVER compromise yourself and have any fellowship with the deeds and works of evil; unrighteousness, referred to as “acts of darkness”. Instead, let your life be such a contrast that it serves to expose, reprove and convict those who do evil. Will we be attacked by slander and mean actions? Of course. Jesus was persecuted, and He warned us that we would also suffer and be persecuted for the kingdom of God, IF we were true Believers. Yet, Jesus said to “Rejoice, and be glad, for your reward in Heaven is great!”. (See Matt. 5;11-14) It is even a shame to speak of the evil things unbelievers do in secret and darkness. The end result of such actions is eternal death.

5:13-14

Light always exposes evil. If there is no light, one cannot see what is wrong. Where things are clear and visible, then there is light. So, the Light of God makes things clear to us. If we turn off the lights, we cannot see well enough to function. Could one stumble around in the dark and not expect to run into trouble? We NEED the Light of God’s Word to help us see God’s Truth. Therefore, Wake Up Sleepyheads! Get with it! Seize the day and make the most of the opportunity for our King, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. (Isaiah 60:1)

5:15-16

Be very careful how you walk; that is, how you live your lives. Live with precision and accuracy, seeking proper guidance and intelligent forethought so as to seek and do the Will of God. Seek wisdom from God’s Word. He will answer those who diligently seek Him. Our generation is filled with people who tragically drift through life with no thought for their eternal destination. Carefully plan to use your time wisely. Time is the most valuable treasure God has given us. We must not waste time; we must utilize it to the fullest. God warns us that the days are evil. Can you see why He told us in Psalm 90:12 “so teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.” We need godly wisdom, so we will be wise enough to fully exploit the opportunities God places before us. Paul was referring to the evil days of their times, yet we face those same evil days as we, as Christians, become increasingly “politically incorrect.”

5:17

We are warned to NEVER be careless or foolish or thoughtless about our lives; we are to seek to understand and obey the Will of God for our lives. How do we get the very best God has for us? Only by being in His Will ~ there is no other way! So many people are in some sort of a mess, begging God to help them out of the mess they themselves created, or allowed, by not being in His Will. (See Romans 12:1,2; James 1:5; Co. 1:9-10 and 3:15; Romans 8:28)

5:18

NEVER be drunk with wine (or under the influence of any other type of alcohol or drug) Yet, we are to be filled to overflowing with the Holy Spirit. Remember, we are filled with the Holy Spirit as we seek to obey God’s Will through the Power of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit brought us into the Body of Christ (1Corth. As:13) The Holy Spirit indwells us, giving us the power for holiness, worship, and service of our Lord. The Holy Spirit teaches us and seals us and continuously fills us and leads us on our transformation into the person God intends us to be. The more we empty ourselves of our selfish, sinful ways, the more the Holy Spirit can fill us with God’s wonderful perfect ways! We are on an exciting journey with the Holy Spirit, with the end result guaranteed to bring us to great joy and fulfillment.

5:19-20

Sharing with one another in the Body of Christ with spiritual songs and offering joyful praises to God. We are to praise God even in the midst of trials and tribulations. Difficult, yet possible, only with the help of the Holy Spirit. We must always give thanks to God for all things, all in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. We must learn to be grateful to God and develop an attitude of gratitude. Remember, Gratitude comes from the same root word as Grace.

5:21

We must submit ourselves to one another out of love; the same kind of love that Jesus gives us. He submitted Himself humbly to all those He died for.

Now Paul goes on to detail the areas of how we must submit ourselves.

5:22

Wives, submit yourself to your husbands as a service to the Lord. When wives marry, they are ‘submitting’ themselves to their husbands. The wife must then submit who she is, and what her needs are, to her husband. He cannot read her mind; she needs to graciously let him know how she feels and what she needs from Him. At the same time, she must honor and respect her husband so as to honor and glorify God.

5:23

Husband are to be the head of the wife, just as Christ is the head of the church; and Christ is the Savior of the Body. Christ provides for, protects, and cares for His church. So, also, the husband must provide for, protect, and care for his wife. Remember, she has submitted herself to his loving care.

5:24

Therefore, in the same manner that the church is subject to Christ, let the wives be subject to their husbands in every area. The Church seeks to know what God wants and to obey God’s directives and do what pleases Him; all the while knowing that God deeply loves His Church and provides for all its needs. So also, the wife will seek to know and understand her husband and do what pleases him, relying on him to love and provide for her needs. Notice that God doesn’t force the Church to obey Him, or demand that the Church do or act in a specific way. God graciously gave the Church freedom in serving Him in ways that bring joy and fulfillment. Husbands must treat their wives in this same way.

5:25

Husbands are COMMANDED to love their wives. In fact, husbands are to sacrificially love their wives, just as Christ loved the Church and sacrificed Himself and died for it! This is a very difficult command unless the wife chooses to honor and obey her husband. Even then, this is never easy.

5:26-27

Now Paul shifts in his comparison, to tell us that He, meaning Jesus Christ, might sanctify the Church and cleanse her by the washing of water with the Word of God. The very Word of God serves to cleanse us. Paul continues in his analogy to tell us that He, Jesus, intends to present the Church to Himself in glorious splendor, without any flaws or sins, so that she might be holy and righteous. These descriptions are used to identify the perfect Bride. Thus, Paul uses this analogy to present to his hearers that the Church is to be Christ’s Bride! This idea of the Church as the Bride of Christ is a new mystery revealed to the Ephesians.

5:28-29

In the same manner ~ now Paul shifts back to the duties of the husband ~ men, or husbands, ought to love their wives as they love their own bodies. Husband and Wife are to be one flesh, thus the husband is to treat his wife as his own flesh. Obviously, no man ever hates his own flesh, but nourishes himself and cherishes himself, taking good care of himself. So, then the husband cares for his wife, in the same way the Lord takes care of His Church.

5:30-32

We, as Believers, are members of His body. We are somehow, mystically, the very Body of Christ on earth. For this very reason, a man shall leave his father and mother and shall be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. Marriage is between one man and one woman. (Gen. 2:24; Matt. 19:5, 6; Mark 10:8; 1 Corth. 6:16) etc. Paul says, “This is a great mystery, I speak concerning the relationship of Christ and the Church.” The perfect marriage should reflect the relationship of Christ and the Church:

MARRIAGE: New life is created through the union of husband and wife. This union is to meet life’s challenges; the family unit is the primary basis of a healthy society; God communicates His Truth through the Spiritual bond of marriage. When we are born again, we also become “New Life”. The Jews consider Marriage as being ‘born again’.

THE BODY OF CHRIST: Christ is head of the church; we are precious to Him (Eph. 5:25) We are His crown of glory, His jewels; He has great love for His Church (Phil 4:1;1 Thess. 2:8, etc.) ~ we are His Bride. (Rev. 21:2 – 22:17)

All through the Old Testament, the prophetic types of marriages all pointed to Christ and His Church. Even ancient marriages followed this prophecy: The marriage was arranged by the father (God the Father promised us to Jesus as His Bride); The Bridegroom was absent from the bride to build her a dwelling place, (Jesus said He would go and prepare a dwelling place for us) then the bridegroom was to take his bride suddenly and unexpectedly in the night; (The Rapture?) Then there was to be a seven-day marriage celebration (7 years?), It appears there will be seven years of tribulation on earth while the marriage supper of the Lamb is going on in Heaven. (Insights gleaned from Chuck Missler’s Countdown to Eternity.)

5:33

Nevertheless, let every one of you (husbands) love your wife so much, that it would seem to be the same as you love yourself; so that every one of you (wives) will honor, respect, praise, admire and love your husband exceedingly. (1 Peter 3:2)

Your husband is a gift from God, do you wives treat him that way? Your wife is also a precious gift from God, do you husbands treat her as God’s gift? Why not begin today by treating your spouse as a precious, wonderful gift from God! For ALL of us, including those who are unmarried, why not begin right now to treat others, especially friends and family, as though they are a gift from God!

Ephesians: Chapter 4

Paul has spoken to us as true Believers in Chapters 1 and 2. Then, in Chapter 3, he revealed the Mystery of our belonging to the Body of Christ, in Christ Jesus. Now he brings us to the tremendous reality which reveals the eminence and transcendence of God. Paul lived a spirit-filled life; Jesus was EVERYTHING to him. Paul gave up EVERYTHING to obey and follow Jesus. Paul was so filled with God’s Love that all his money, time, talents, and his very life were given totally and completely to God. He was truly a bondservant of Jesus.

The following chapters cannot be obeyed by those who have only accepted Jesus as Savior; and nothing more. Jesus is simply their ‘fire insurance’ to stay out of Hell. They do not study, nor apply His Word. None of this book of Ephesians is for the unbeliever, they cannot understand, nor appreciate, nor comprehend; and certainly, cannot obey any of this. It is impossible. Remember, dead men cannot even walk, yet alone understand or follow Jesus. Unbelievers are truly dead men.

The following Chapters are for the mature, obedient Believers, who truly want to be the Bride of Christ and be rulers and heirs of Heaven. We want to live victorious, pure lives of obedience. The challenge is great, yet the rewards are incredible, truly out of this world!

4:1

Therefore, remember when we see this word, we must remember what it is ‘there for’. Paul is summarizing the purpose and reason for the first three Chapters. This is crucial, we must not miss these Truths. Paul, even as a prisoner of the Lord Jesus, passionately begs them, beseeches them, to walk, that is, continually live, lives that are worthy of the high calling, the vocation or heirship, that we have been promised by Jesus. We have been called to be “Heirs with Christ Jesus”. So, are we living as heirs of Heaven? Does your behavior bring a credit to God? You have been called to serve Him. That is an incredible honor, how are you doing? Once we belong to Christ, and seek His Will in our lives, then we can obey Him and bring honor, praise and Glory to God.

Paul gives Seven Christian Graces that are listed and applied to us, as True, obedient Believers.

4:2

Live in a manner that reflects your status before God; with complete lowliness of mind (true humility) and meekness (which is power under control) being totally unselfish, yet gentle and mild, with patience (longsuffering), bearing with one another and making allowances (putting up with people who may be disagreeable or aggravating) because you love one another. (With the same type of Love God has given you)

4:3

Striving earnestly to guard and keep harmony and oneness (unity) of the Body of Believers; all this in a spirit of the binding power of peace. This means we speak the Truth of God’s Word in Love, never compromising the Truth of God’s Word, yet seeking harmony in the Body of Believers, the church. Christians should never, ever support or tolerate false teaching; we are obligated to speak the Truth in Love. (Eph. 4:15)

4:4

Paul reminds us that there is only One Body and One Spirit, and One Hope. (Titus 2:13). That is why denominationalism often divides and destroys the unity of the Body of Christ. Paul reminds us that there is only one church, the Body of Christ. Our One Hope is the Return of Jesus to take us to Heaven in the ‘catching up’ of ‘Rapture’ (Eph 1:13-14). Those of us who die before the Rapture, will be immediately in the presence of Jesus.

4:5

There is only One Lord; our Lord Jesus Christ; One Faith, this is the Truth of God’s Word (Acts 2;42: Rev. 2:1-7, et al). One Baptism, refers to the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, when we are born again (1 Cor. 12:13). The ritual of water baptism is just a symbol of the real baptism of the Holy Spirit.

4:6

There is One God and Father of us all (Believers) God is God of all, but only the Father of Believers. Being born again as sons and daughters of God makes God our Father. God created everyone, but only those who are True Believers are His children.

4:7

Paul now moves from what we all have in common to how we differ from one another. Grace is given to each of us individually (in different ways) in proportion to the measure of Christ’s rich and bounteous gift. We know that in the physical world we are not all the same. We have different abilities, talents, intellect, strengths, appearances, etc. We did nothing to ‘earn’ any of these gifts. So, it is with the spiritual realm, we are freely given spiritual gifts (each of us has at least one, often more, of these gifts). Just as we do not question why someone was given a beautiful voice, face, body, brains, etc.; we are not to question the spiritual gifts given to others. Our job is to focus on the gifts God has graciously given us and seek to use them to do the Will of God and bring Him great glory. If you want to review the lists of spiritual gift see 1Cor. 12:4-11; 17-31; Romans 12:3-8; Eph 4:11. Each list is different and probably only representative. We are admonished to inspect the fruits of the Spirit, rather than inspecting or questioning the gifts.

4:8

Therefore it is said (a quote from Psalm 68:18) When He ascended on high, He led captivity captive (Jesus lead a train of vanquished foes) and He bestowed gifts on men. “Captivity captive,” means Jesus conquered those who had conquered us, namely sin, the devil and death. His death on the cross destroyed sin’s hold on us. Jesus defeated Satan, and defeated death. The gifts he bestowed on men were: The destruction of sin’s power over us ~ we are forgiven! The gift of becoming sons of God. The gift of Eternal life. The gift of freedom from destruction in Hell and separation from God forever. These are incredible gifts Paul is referring to.

4:9-10

He ascended, now what can this “He ascended” mean but that He had previously descended from the heights of heaven into the depths, the lower parts of the earth? Why? To open the prison to those who are bound (Isa. 61:1; 1 Peter 3;19). He Who descended is the very same One as He Who also has ascended high above all the heavens, that He, (His very presence) might fill all things, the entire universe, from the lowest to the highest.

4:11

His gifts were varied. He Himself appointed and gave men to us, some to be apostles (special messengers) some to be prophets (inspired preachers and expounders), some evangelists (preachers of the Gospel, traveling missionaries), some as pastors, (shepherds of His flock) and some as teachers (teaching the Truth of God’s Word). Note that disciples were followers, or learners. That’s us. Prophets were to be ‘forth-tellers’ of the Word of God. Their purpose was edification, encouragement, and consolation (1Corth 14:3).

4:12

His intention was the perfecting and the full equipping of the saints (True Believers), that they should do the work of ministering toward building up Christ’s Body, the church. The pastor is called to equip the saints so the Body might be built up. The greatest tragedy of our churches is the Biblical illiteracy in the pews. We would never dare get into an airplane if the pilot didn’t know more about flying than the average church member knows about the Word of God. Remember, well-fed sheep multiply naturally; they don’t need to be coaxed or pushed! Our churches need to be educated in God’s Word; then the growth will happen naturally!

4:13

So that the church might develop until we all attain oneness in the Faith and in the comprehension of the full and accurate knowledge of the Son of God. This ‘accurate knowledge’ is only gained through careful study and application of God’s Word. So that we might finally arrive at mature and complete personhood. The completeness of personality, which is nothing less than the standard height of Christ’s own perfection. Our goal is the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ Jesus and the completeness found in Him. We are to be Christlike in our maturity.

4:14

So that we may no longer be like children, easily swayed by lies; tossed around like sailing ships in the high seas, driven to and fro by gusts of wind and teaching, and wavering with every changing wind of doctrine; being the victim of the cunning and cleverness of unscrupulous men engaged in every shifting form of trickery in inventing errors to mislead us. Remember, to know the Truth of God’s Word is to protect yourself from lies. The better you know God’s Word, the easier it is to detect lies and errors. This study will greatly help you protect yourself and your loved ones from those who would attempt to deceive you and lead you astray. Reading God’s Word daily is the best protection you can obtain!

4:15

Instead, let our lives lovingly express Truth in all things; speaking in truth, dealing in truth, living in truth. Enfolded in love, let us grow up in every way and in all things into Jesus Who is the Head; He is the Christ, the Messiah, the Anointed One. Truth without love is brutality; love without truth is hypocrisy. Truth unites; lies divide. Love unites, selfishness divides.

4:16

Through Jesus, the entire body is closely joined and firmly knit together by the ‘joints and ligaments’ with which it is supplied. When each part of the body is working properly in all its functions, then the Church can grow to full maturity. Every Believer has a ministry to other Believers. An isolated Christian cannot minister to others; neither can others minister to him. The entire ‘circulatory system’ of the body is Love! Just as blood supplies life to our bodies, so Love supplies Life to Christ’s Body. We can’t do it alone! Anyone who says they can, are lying to themselves.

4:17

Therefore, I solemnly testify in the name of the Lord, as if I were in His presence, that you must not live as the world does. The world lives in perverseness in folly, vanity and emptiness of their souls and futility of their minds. The Bible was written to be learned and obeyed, not just studied. Knowledge without obedient application is worthless. We are to be doers of the Word, not hearers only (James1:22) Repentance is a complete change of mind. When we truly trust Christ as our Savior and Lord, our entire outlook changes; our values and goals are no longer tied to this world. We develop a worldview that is based on God’s Word and Eternity. We must truly be Driven by Eternity! Keep your focus on the goal of being in Heaven with your Lord, God, and Savior!

4:18

Those who ignore God’s Word or fail to study and apply it to their lives, have their understanding darkened, they are alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is within them. Why? All because of the blindness of their heart. Look around us and see the Truth. Our entire culture has lost its perception of moral values. Sin has a hardening, deadening, blinding effect upon people. An unsaved person’s thinking is futile. He does not know God, he cannot understand the world around him, or even understand himself. Our world today is filled with knowledge, but with very little true Wisdom. Remember, knowledge changes, Wisdom is Eternal!

4:19

These unbelievers, in their spiritual apathy, have become callous and reckless and have abandoned themselves to unbridled sensuality, eager and greedy to indulge in every form of impurity that their depraved desires may suggest and demand. (See Romans 1:18-32). Yes, Satan has blinded the minds and hearts of the unbeliever; sad, but True.

4:20-21

Yet, you have not so learned Christ! Notice that we have LEARNED Christ. Note it doesn’t say “learned about” Christ. We have a personal relationship with our Creator and Messiah. We hear His voice because we are His sheep. Paul goes on to say he assumes we have really heard Him and been taught by Him (through the Holy Spirit). All Truth is in Jesus (embodied and personified by Him) Jesus is the Way, Truth and Life.

4:22-24

Therefore, strip yourself of your former nature, put off and discard your old unrenewed self, which characterized your previous manner of life and becomes corrupt through lusts and desires that spring from delusion (all this evil comes from lies and deceit). (See Romans 5-8) And be constantly renewed in the spirit of your mind, having a fresh and new mental and spiritual attitude. (Romans 12:1,2) We need to put on the Mind of Christ. We must change our way of thinking. This is the secret to going from wrong actions to right actions. Your thinking… Focus on, pray for, and seek God’s Love and goodness in dealing with others. Decide in your mind how you will be kind, loving, forgiving, generous, pure, and holy. Practice saying it out loud. I am God’s child. I will be loving and forgiving. I forgive so and so for such and such. Say it and believe it. Ask the Holy Spirit to give you scriptures to encourage your mind attitude to be Christ-like. Now you can put on the new man, the regenerated self, created in God’s image. We must be Godlike, in true righteousness and holiness. We are a new creation (2 Cor. 5:17) and must act like it.

4:25

Therefore, rejecting all lies and deceit, we speak and express only the Truth remembering we are members of the same Body of Christ. The author of lies is Satan. Lies destroy relationships. Lies destroy ourselves. Lies destroy Trust. A true Believer CANNOT be a liar, even in little things. Remember the first sin judged in the early church was lying; the penalty was death. (Acts 5:1-11)

4:26

When angry, do not sin. Remember anger is an emotional arousal caused by something that displeases us. Out-of-control anger is referred to as ‘temporary insanity’. God warns us not to let a day go by without dealing with our anger. It is our responsibility, no one made us angry, we chose to BE angry. We should be angry at sin, yet not at the person. Difficult? Very. Impossible? No. We need to go to God, confess the ‘reasons’ for our anger and seek to forgive, even if the offender(s) do not deserve forgiveness. If it is a situation we are involved in, we need to do whatever is in our power to rectify a wrong. Example: I am angry at our corrupt government, yet I must do whatever I can to correct the situation; so I pray that God would intervene and convict and change those in government. Yet, I remain open to God’s leading to join with others to correct the evil government, laws, etc.

4:27

Paul tells us we MUST deal with our anger, or it will give the devil a foothold, an opportunity to cause us to sin and not be in God’s Will. If we fail to deal with our anger, Satan will use it against us. Knowing this should cause us to deal with anger as quickly as possible. Anger not dealt with, will lead to sin.

4:28

Paul tells those who steal to stop it. He also tells us to not let the thief steal from us anymore. This is an important point. Who is stealing from you? Are you stealing from yourself by going into debt? God instituted the rights of ‘private property’ as one of the Ten Commandments. Thou shalt not steal. If you don’t own anything, then no one can steal from you. We are to protect our property and not let others steal it. This includes the government! Socialism is a devious method of stealing from those who have worked to earn something. Any form of ‘entitlement’ becomes stealing. Paul goes on to say that the thief should become industrious, making an honest living with his own hands and hard work, so that he, too, may be able to give to those in need. There are those who are in true need, not lazy want. Be careful to note the difference. If a man foolishly puts himself “in need” we have no obligation to “bail him out”. Certainly, we should not let those in need starve, but we should not restore what he “lost”. Even God’s Word says, “If someone refuses to work, then he shouldn’t eat.” II Thessalonians 3:10.

4:29

Never let any foul or polluting language, or evil words, or unwholesome or worthless talk ever come out of your mouth. Speak only words that are good and beneficial to the spiritual growth and progress of others; fitting it to the need and occasion, so that your speech may be a blessing and give grace to those who hear you speak. Unsure if you should say something? Ask God, is this good and beneficial? Am I encouraging and uplifting another? If not, just pray silently. Remember, even a fool is thought to be wise when he says nothing; but if he speaks, he removes all doubt. Proverbs 17:28

4:30

Never, ever grieve the Holy Spirit of God. Did you realize that you can cause pain and sadness to the God of the Universe! You can’t grieve someone who doesn’t care about you. The Holy Spirit deeply loves you; He lives within you; He gives constantly to you; you don’t want to quench or grieve Him! You have been, and are, sealed with the Holy Spirit who is working continually to transform you into the image and likeness of God. He is constantly striving to free you from all temptation and power of sin. I Thessalonians 5:19-22.

4:31

Let all bitterness, indignation, and wrath; that is rage; bad temper, resentment, anger, animosity quarreling, contention, slander, evil speaking, abusive or blasphemous language and malice be completely banished and removed from you. Anger and bitterness poison the inner man. The basic cause of bitterness is an unforgiving spirit. Do you want to have joy and be happy? Then learn and master how to forgive and forget. What? You want me to forgive AND forget! Yes, if you think constantly about a wrong done to you, then you have not forgiven. You must choose to banish thoughts of the incident from your mind. Certainly, you remember enough of the incident so you will not be a victim again, but you do not dwell on it. Ask God to help you in this area.

4:32

Now Paul tells us how we should act; Be useful and helpful and kind to one another. Be tenderhearted, compassionate, understanding and loving. Forgive one another readily and freely just as God in Christ Jesus forgave you. Don’t they deserve to be forgiven? Remember, Jesus forgave us when we were his enemies, wretched sinners, deserving death and hell and eternal separation from God. We must do the same for others.

There is so much Truth and application in this chapter; the only way to truly grasp it, is to read and pray over each verse, asking God, through the Holy Spirit, to show you His Truth for your life. We pray you will truly seek to become transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit. This is your True Worship of God: Obeying His Word in all areas of your life.

Ephesians: Chapter 3

Chapter 1: POSITION.
Chapter 2: POSSESSIONS and AUTHORITY.
Chapter 3: Mystery revealed!

We are already with and in Christ Jesus in the Heavenlies ~ All because of God’s incredible Love. God’s Mercy and Grace enable us to be forgiven and have His Power and Love in our very beings. With God’s Power coursing through us we can share His Love with a fallen and hurting world. We can serve Him with His own Power and Love.

Paul’s theme is Christ and the church, that’s us, the eternal plan of God to gather all things in Christ Jesus. This letter begins in eternity past and carries us to eternity future. The Mysteries are being revealed to us. Ephesians is Paul’s greatest word on the church, teaching us what the church is in the mind of God, and what it ought to be in practice before the eyes of men.

In the Old Testament, God revealed through prophecy His plan for the people of Israel: that He would establish them in their Kingdom when they received their Messiah, and then through Israel He would convert the Gentiles. God literally offered them the Kingdom! How? Through the ministry of John, the Baptist, yet the Jews allowed him to be killed. (Math. 3:2) Then through the ministry of Jesus, the Jews asked that He be killed! Then through the apostles and Stephen, whom the Jews themselves killed (see Acts 7:54-60).

Three very generous, repeated offers were made to Israel, but the nation rejected each one of them. They had rejected the Father, who had sent John; then they rejected the Son; and then they rejected the Holy Spirit, who was energizing the witnessing apostles. With the death of Stephen, the offers of the Kingdom ceased temporarily; the message went out to the Samaritans and the Gentiles (see Acts 8 and 10). Then, only Paul was saved miraculously. (Acts 9)

3:1

Paul tells us that it is for this very reason ~ the fact that we as Believers are being completely transformed into a Holy Temple known as the ‘Body of Jesus Christ’. That he, Paul, is a prisoner. We ARE His! We belong to Him. He will keep us safe in His Powerful, forgiving Love. Nothing and no one can ever touch us. Think of it, you and I are being protected, guided, and directed by the Creator of the Universe. As we make daily choices to obey the Holy Spirit we are metamorphosed, that is, transfigured, into the real person we were meant to be. (2 Cor. 3:18). Just as Jesus was transfigured or metamorphosed, on the holy mountain before Peter, James, and John; we too, are slowly becoming more and more like Jesus. The entire Body of Christ is being metamorphosed into one Holy Body of the Living Christ. Paul goes on to assure us that the reason he is a prisoner of Jesus Christ is because he teaches the Truth that we Gentiles Believers are becoming the Body of Christ, along with believing Jews. It is for this very reason that Paul was jailed. (See Acts 21:29) The Jews refused to accept the truth that Gentiles could become part of God’s chosen people. The very reason that Paul was brought to Rome, the reason he made an appeal to Caesar, was because of his preaching the gospel to the Gentiles. So, Paul wants us to understand that it is for us, you and I, that he had to suffer in prison. Yet, he is joyous because we ARE part of the Body of Jesus Christ.

3:2

Paul continues to share that he assumes that we have heard of the stewardship of God’s Grace that was entrusted to him to teach and share and encourage Gentiles to receive. All this was for our benefit. Are we good stewards of God’s Grace in sharing with those in need of His Love and Forgiveness? Someone cared enough about us to share God’s Mercy and Grace with us so we could become joint heirs with Jesus. We must do the same for other lost souls. To ignore this stewardship is to ignore God’s call on our lives. Are we ignoring and disobeying, Jesus? As we learn of God’s gracious Mercy and Grace in our lives, we are being called by God to share His Truth with others. Can you hear Him calling you?

3:3-5

This mystery and secret revelation were given directly to Paul from God. God touched Paul’s heart and mind in a special way so that he was able to comprehend and understand this incredible mystery. Paul reminds them that he had briefly revealed this direct revelation in an earlier letter to the Ephesians. (4. – 5.) Paul refers to the insight and understanding of the Mystery of Christ Jesus. There are twelve Kingdom Mysteries:

  1. Mystery of the Kingdom of God.
  2. Mystery of the Kingdom of Heaven.
  3. Mystery of the Manifestation of God in the Flesh.
  4. Mystery of Salvation by Faith alone.
  5. Mystery of the Ultimate Unity.
  6. Mystery of Gentiles in the Body of Christ.
  7. Mystery of the Bride of Christ.
  8. The Mystery of the Harpazo ~ Rapture.
  9. Mystery of Iniquity.
  10. Mystery of the Seven Churches.
  11. Mystery of Israel’s Blindness.
  12. Mystery Babylon; the counterfeit kingdom.

This Mystery was never disclosed to human beings, or angels, in past generations. It has only now been revealed by the Holy Spirit to God’s faithful apostles and prophets.

3:6

What exactly is this Mystery? Jews and Gentiles are to be fellow heirs of Christ. How? Jews and Gentiles, together becoming the’ Body of Christ’. All true Believers are part of the Body of Christ and are joint partakers in the same divine promise in Christ through their acceptance of the Mercy and Grace of the Gospel of Jesus. Jesus said this mystery was even hidden from angels. The Church, being called out to be a people for the heavens, to be the Body and Bride of Christ for all the ages to come. Jesus will forever administer the affairs of the redeemed universe through those He has chosen. Do you want to be one of those He rewards with such unbelievable privileges? Then you must obey Him now! The rewards are out of this world!

This Mystery of the Body of Christ was unknown even to the 12 apostles. Remember even Peter had to have the vision of the sheet from Heaven (Acts 10) to teach him that the truth of the Gospel was to be shared with Gentiles. Yet, even then, he didn’t understand that the Gentiles were to be fellow heirs with Christ Jesus. This Truth of the Body of Christ being ALL Believers, both Jews and Gentiles slowly began to dawn on the early Church.

In Ephesians 1:3 we learned the Church was promised the Spiritual blessings in the heavenlies. We are the promised Bride of Christ. The Church will reign with Christ over the entire universe. (Eph 1:22-23) The promises for Israel are still coming. Yet the promises for the Church are unique. We are the most privileged body of Believers that we read about in the entire Bible! Do not take your calling lightly, this is an incredible privilege and blessing from our Savior and Lord. How long will this opportunity last? God has given us the answers:

  1. The Church came into existence after the ascension of Jesus (Acts 2).
  2. The Church was formed by the baptism of the Spirit. (1 Cor. 12:13).
  3. The Church will be completed at the Rapture.
    (1 Thess. 4:13-18; 1 Cor. 15:23, 51-52.)
  4. The Church was the revelation of Jesus, (Math. 13) By His seven letters (Rev. 2 & 3); and Paul’s seven churches.

Please be aware that the Church is NOT a replacement of Israel. We are a separate fellowship created by God to serve Jesus as His Body and Glorify God, forever. In Revelation, the 24 elders of Rev. 4:4 represent a completed group. They are NOT the Tribulation saints (see Rev. 7:13, 14), Nor are they angels. (See Rev. 7:11) Note that Elders were to be the highest officials in the Church. Thus, the logical references are that these ‘Elders’ represent the Church in Heaven.

3:7

Paul tells us that he was made a minister of the Gospel of Jesus; this revealing of the Mystery of the Body of Christ, by the free gift of God’s Grace. This gift was given to Paul through, and by, the power of the Holy Spirit. Paul wants his readers to understand that this gift was unearned and undeserved.

3:8

Paul goes on to tell us that he is the very least of all the saints, that is, God’s consecrated people. Paul always had the memory of his persecutions of the Church. As one understands the deep truths of God’s Word, it never gives a person a ‘big head’; instead, it gives one a broken and contrite heart; deep sorrow of sin, and total dependence on the Holy Spirit. This grace, the privilege and favor of God, was granted and graciously entrusted to Paul to proclaim to the Gentiles the unending, boundless, fathomless, incalculable, and exhaustless riches of Christ Jesus. The unbelievable wealth that no human being could have ever discovered or searched out and found.

3:9

Paul continues to tell us that this mystery is given to enlighten all men (believers) and make plain to them what is the plan regarding the Gentiles and providing for the salvation of all men, no matter who they are. Christianity is the fairest way to God. Think about it, Everyone is invited. Everyone can accept. Everyone can meet the requirements. All religions have requirements that demand certain actions. One must earn their way to God. Not Christianity, it is a free gift! In a very unfair world, Christianity becomes the fairest way to God. Those who say Christianity is exclusive and narrow-minded have not examined the Truth. Or, they have seen the Truth, and rejected it. Paul tells us this mystery of the salvation of all men was kept hidden through the ages and concealed until now in the mind of God Who created all things by Christ Jesus.

3:10

The purpose is that through the Church, the complicated many-sided wisdom of God in all its infinite variety and innumerable aspects might now be made known to the angelic rulers and authorities (principalities and powers) in the heavenly sphere. The angels rejoice at the repentance of one lost sinner (Luke 15;10). Angels watch activities of local churches (1 Cor. 11:10). We are a spectacle to angels (1Corth. 4:9). Think about it, supposedly ‘intelligent’ men scorn the salvation offered by Jesus, and all that He promises us; yet the highest intelligences regard it with profound interest. Who is really ‘intelligent’ here? God, from the very beginning, intended to give us all equal opportunity, yet He concealed it for centuries; now revealing it in the Church age through Paul.

3:11

All of these Truths are given to us so that we may know and understand God’s wonderful Eternal plan for us as His Body of Believers. God’s purposes are eternal and timeless. Satan knows the scriptures and God kept His program for the church hidden so that He could prevent Satan from hindering His Plan. Satan took Christ to the cross and sealed his own doom. More glory has come to God and more blessing has come to believing Jews and Gentiles than if sin had never been allowed to enter. We must remember that the church is unique and has special functions. Everything we have learned, through the Holy Spirit, must be obediently applied to our lives in accordance with God’s Eternal Will. All of life, everything that happens to us, physically, emotionally, and spiritually, is all being carried into effect through and in Christ Jesus, our Lord, God and Savior. Remember, everything counts. ALL we do, say and think will be judged.

3:12

Jesus has graciously given us Faith in Him that allows us to have courage and confidence in approaching God in prayer. We have free access to God with complete and total freedom. Grace gives us the freedom to seek and obey our Creator. All this is because the Holy Spirit dwells within us. Notice the focus on the Father, Son and Holy Spirit throughout these passages.

3:13

What an incredible statement! Paul asked them not to give up or lose heart because of his suffering; yet he insisted that the suffering on their behalf would bring honor to them. This is an important lesson for us that God uses suffering to bring about honor.

3:14

Paul told them that he was on his knees before the Father, because of this plan. The plan of building all of us together in Christ Jesus; that is, the Body of Christ. When we go to our Father, on our knees, it puts us into a humble position of acknowledging our true position before our Creator. He is our Lord, God, King and Creator; we are merely His Workmanship. Note that even Jesus fell on His face at Gethsemane. (Matt. 26:39).

3:15

Paul prays for the entire saved family of God. That includes all believers on earth that are called by His name. There is no such thing in Scripture as the “Universal Fatherhood of God” that saves all men. Jesus said, “You must be born again” (John 3:7). True believers are sons of God by their rebirth. (1 John 3:1-2, John 1:11-12). Non-believers are NOT children of God!

3:16

Paul prays that from God’s magnificent glory, God would strengthen and empower the inner man. The presence of the Holy Spirit is proof of our salvation. Our ‘inner man’ is our soul (personality and character traits, who we are) and spirit, which is indwelt by the Holy Spirit. We must pray for right choices to obey the leading of the Holy Spirit so that we would be strengthened and encouraged and empowered within our soul and spirit. The Power of the Spirit is enablement for mature, stable, intelligent, obedient Christians. (Acts 1:8) Our inner man must be cleansed (Psalm 51:7), washed by the Word (Eph. 5:26), fed (Matt. 4:4) and renewed daily (2 Cor. 4:16.) There are many other references that tell us our ‘inner man’ must be carefully kept in God’s Word and Will.

3:17

May Jesus Christ, through Faith, dwell and abide; make His permanent home, in your hearts. We must be rooted and grounded in His Love; that is, firmly and permanently established in Christ Jesus. Are you so firmly established in Faith that NOTHING will derail you from following Christ? If not, then pray for that kind of powerful FAITH!

3:18

How secure and firmly established in God’s Love are you? So permanently that you may have the Power and be strong enough to apprehend and grasp and understand, with all the saints of God, the actual experience of God’s love in all its breadth, length, height, and depth. It is one thing to understand something, yet another to truly make it your own. Is God’s love so firmly established in your being that you cannot be separated from it? That Love has breadth, meaning great extent; length, referring to duration beyond our time frame; depth, meaning the deep things of God, reaching beyond our comprehension; height, referring to the ‘heavenly heights’, Eternal life as an heir of God. Can you begin to grasp the idea of God’s incredible powerful Love?

3:19

Paul prays that we might really and truly come to know, experience for ourselves, all the dimensions, into infinity, of the glorious Love of God. This love surpasses mere knowledge (passes all human understanding) without personal experience; that we might be filled throughout our entire being unto all the fullness of God. That we would have the richest measure of God’s divine Presence and become a body wholly filled and completely flooded with God Himself. When God permeates every part of our being, then, and only then, does His Will becomes our will. We can only function successfully within His perfect will. This would mean we cannot sin because sin is being outside of God’s Will. Don’t we really want that kind of love to transform us into His child?

3:20-21

Now Paul wraps up this incredible ‘prayer’, by assuring us that ‘Him’, God our Father, Who by His action within us, The Holy Spirit, who is constantly and continually at work within us, is able to carry out His purpose and plans, to superabundantly, far over and above all that we dare even ask or think; infinitely beyond our wildest and highest prayers, desires, thoughts, hopes and dreams. ~ to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations forever and ever, throughout all eternity. Amen; meaning and so it shall be fulfilled.

Memorizing this prayer, given in Ephesians 3: 16-21, would be a powerful way to incorporate God’s very Word, and Promises into your own life. (A copy is enclosed for you to help you put it into the memory of your heart and soul) Those who have memorized these scriptures, and daily pray them into their lives, and the lives of those they love, have experienced wonderful Blessings! God has wonderful Blessings just waiting for you; yet YOU must make the effort to seek and ask.

Lord, God we thank you for your great Love, that strengthens us with your mighty power, within our inner man, through your Holy Spirit, so Jesus Christ can dwell within us, permanently. Almighty and Powerful God, we thank you that even now you are transforming us into the likeness of your beloved Son, our Messiah, Jesus!

Ephesians: Chapter 2

Chapter 1 emphasized our possessions in Christ; Chapter 2. emphasizes our position in Christ. Your POSITION determines both your POSSESSIONS and AUTHORITY. Remember, Paul was a prisoner when he wrote this letter. The Power of God that raised Jesus from the grave and crowned Him with Glory and Honor is the same Power that now works in our very own lives, raising us from spiritual death and seating us in Christ in the heavenlies. God knew Adam and Eve would commit sin and lose their relationship with Him. So why did He bother? The answers are in Chapter 2., and preparation for the Mystery of the Church in chapter 3. Keep these Truths in mind as we study Chapter 2; and preview Chapter 3.

2:1

And you (Believers) He made Alive (spiritually) when you were dead~ slain or condemned to death~ (spiritually) because of your trespasses and sins. The “result” is what we earned ~ spiritual death ~ eternal separation from God. There are two types of death: One is Physical: Our soul is separated from our body. The other is Spiritual: We, our soul (this is our very identity), is eternally separated from God. This is referred to as the “second death”. Which is the most crucial? An unbeliever is not sick with sin; he is dead! A non-believer does not need resuscitation; he needs resurrection. Remember, a corpse never hears any conversation at the funeral parlor.

2:2

In the condition of sin, you at one time walked and lived in sin. You were following the course and fashion of this world (the influence and tendency of the present age of sin). You followed the prince of the power of the air (this ‘prince’ is Satan and his demons). You were under the control of and obedient to this demon spirit; that still constantly works in the sons of disobedience (these are the rebellious, careless, unbelieving people who go against the purposes of God). Unbelievers think they are in control of their lives. Yet, the Truth is that the evil spiritual influences control them, and they don’t even know it! Those who are following evil don’t even realize they are on the path to destruction and death. Keep in mind that everyone is either following Jesus, OR following Satan.

2:3

Among these people (the physical living, yet spiritually dead) we, as well as you, once lived and conducted ourselves in the passions and lusts of our flesh. (Our behavior was governed by our corrupt and sensual nature) Obeying the impulses of the flesh and the thoughts of the mind (our cravings dictated by our senses and our dark imaginings) We were then by nature children of God’s wrath and heirs of His indignation, just like the rest of mankind. In other words, we were in the same boat, a sinking ship, like the Titanic, heading for eternal destruction.

2:4

But God, who is so rich in His mercy; because of, and in order to satisfy His great and wonderful and eternally intense love with which He loves us, (These attributes of God are His eternal and everlasting ways of Who He is). God IS LOVE.

2:5

Even when we were dead in our sins; slain by our own shortcomings and sinful trespasses, He made us alive together in fellowship and in union with Christ, Jesus! God gave us the very life of Christ Himself, the same new life within which He quickened Him, for it is by Grace alone, (God’s favor and mercy which we did not deserve) that we are saved and delivered from judgment and made partakers of Christ’s salvation. Analyze this very carefully, and you will see that God made us alive (spiritually) and brought us into a ‘oneness’ with Jesus; giving us the same new, eternal life that Jesus possesses. God had mercy on us to deliver us from what we deserved: Death and separation from God. Instead, He gives us Grace, the undeserved gift of Eternal Life! We can do absolutely nothing to earn this gift; all we ever “earned” was eternal death! See Romans 6:23.

2:6

Further, God raised us up together with Jesus and made us sit down together (giving us joint seating with Him, positionally,) in the heavenly sphere (all by virtue of our being in Christ Jesus, the Messiah, the Anointed One). Notice the important term “in Christ Jesus”. That position of being “one” with Jesus is very, very important! Read John 17 and put your name in the appropriate places and you will begin to understand what Jesus has done for you.

2:7

God did all this so that He might clearly demonstrate through all the ages to come the immeasurable, limitless, surpassing riches of His free gift of Grace, (His unmerited favor to us) in His kindness and goodness of heart toward us in Christ Jesus. Here we see another confirmation of God’s overwhelming goodness and love, that He makes it so clear that He loves us, no matter how evil and sinful we are. How can we not respond in gratitude and humbleness and seek to confess our sinfulness, repent and turn away from our sins; and accept His gift of forgiveness. Woe to the person who rejects such an incredible gift.

2:8-9

Yes, it is by God’s free unmerited favor of Grace that you are saved and delivered from judgment and made partakers of Christ’s salvation through your faith. And this salvation is not of yourselves, (of your own doing; it never comes through your own striving) It is ALWAYS the gift of God. Not because of your works (not the fulfillment of the Law’s demand) lest any man should boast. We can absolutely never claim that we did ANYTHING to ‘earn’ or ‘merit’ Eternal Life. Eternal life is not the result of what anyone can possibly do, so no one can pride himself or herself in it or take glory to themself.

2:10

We are God’s own handiwork (His workmanship) recreated in Christ Jesus, (born again) that we may do those good works which God predestined (planned before time began) for us (taking paths which He prepared ahead of time). So exactly how do we determine what is God’s Will for our lives and obey it? These simple but important steps must be taken: 1) Confess and turn away from sin as soon as we are aware of it. 2) Yield ourselves to the Holy Spirit. 3) Study God’s Word to discern His Will, then obey it. (See James 2: 8, 14-20, 24) Spend time in prayer every day. 5) Respond to opportunities for service, as God leads you. 6) Seek the fellowship and counsel of other true Believers.

2:11

Paul now focuses on the work of Christ for us Gentiles. Therefore, remember that at one time you were gentile heathens in the flesh, called uncircumcised by those who called themselves circumcised. Jews were set apart by God, chosen ones. Yet their inward hearts were described as uncircumcised, meaning that they were not true believers in God. Do we know those who claim, or appear on the outside, to be Christians, yet their actions and lifestyles betray their true beliefs? Pray for them

2:12

Paul continues to remind us of our pathetic status before we became Believers. We were separated from Christ, utterly estranged, and outlawed from the rights of Israel as a nation and were strangers with no share in the sacred compacts of the Messianic promise. We were ignorant of God’s covenants and promises. We had no hope and were in the world without God. Those who do not know Jesus as their Savior and Lord are in this same condition right now. They are without hope, ignorant of the wonderful promises and covenants God has for His children.

2:13-15

But now in Christ Jesus, you who once were so far away, through and by the blood of Christ Jesus, have now been brought near. For now, Jesus Himself is our peace. He is our bond of unity and harmony. Jesus has made us both, Jew, and Gentile, one Body in Christ. He has broken down and destroyed and completely abolished the hostile dividing wall between us. This mystery reveals that Jesus has united Jews and Gentiles! Remember, Jews only were allowed in the Temple. To enter the Temple (Holy Place) meant death to a Gentile. See Acts 21:28-31.
By dying on the cross, Jesus has paid the ultimate price demanded by the law ~ death ~ and abolished the law by bringing Grace and peace. The ‘new man’ is the Believer; Jew or Gentile, who accepts Jesus as Messiah ~ Savior.

2:16-17

Jesus has now created one Body of believers, both Jews and Gentiles are now the Church. Jews and Gentiles are now fellow members of the Body of Christ. Neither Jews nor Gentiles are under the law anymore. All this brings us peace, we are no longer separated but are reconciled to one another and to Christ Jesus. All those who look for ‘divisions’ are ignoring this Truth. Jesus came and preached peace to you. That peace was for those near and far (Jew and Gentile). This peace is for us, today, through the Holy Spirit. As we forgive others, God forgives us, and we have Peace. We are then able to follow and obey the Will of God through the Holy Spirit.

2:18

Through Him, Jesus, we both (Jew and Gentile) have access by one Spirit unto the Father. The mystery of the Trinity is revealed here. Jesus, Spirit and Father. We can enter into the presence of God through prayer. Think of it, we can enter the throne room of the universe, kneel down before our Creator and address Him as Father. What peace and satisfaction this should bring us every day. Thank you, Lord Jesus!

2:19-20

Paul continues with this incredible Truth. Therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and of the household of God. We are privileged, first-class citizens of Heaven. With our new position “In Christ” we are a new creation, born again. We belong to God’s own household. I (speak your name) belong to God! We have the unbelievable privilege of coming into the Holy of Holies. Do we take advantage of that privilege as often as possible? Why not? We are built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets with Christ Jesus Himself the chief cornerstone. We are the Temple of God! The Holy Spirit lives within us as proof. Our foundation is in Christ Jesus.

2:21

In Christ we are joined together harmoniously, and we continue to grow and increase into a beautiful, magnificent, holy Temple in Christ. We, as Believers, are dedicated and are to be Sacred to the presence of our Lord and Savior. We are a Living Temple, growing and becoming Sanctified (being more Christ-like) each day, as we chose to obey the Will of God. Remember Jesus said, “upon this Rock I will build my Church”. That’s us! We are living stones, (according to 1 Peter 2:5) being built up into a spiritual house, a holy priesthood. All for the purpose of Glorifying God. What a wonderful purpose He has created us for.

2:22

We, in our own time, are part of the wonderful, amazing Body of Christ, being continually being built up, creating the marvelous Holy dwelling place of the Living God. We are instructed to Love God with all our heart, soul, strength and mind. Our choice to obey the Will of God is crucial in our spiritual growth. We want to be In Christ in all we do, say, and think. Our key is God’s Word. His Word alone reveals to us, through prayer, His will for our lives. The more time we spend in His Word, praying for His Will in our lives, the more we will clearly be able to discern, through the Holy Spirit, God’s wonderful, joyous, exciting plan for our lives. Jesus promises us in John 10:10 that He came so that we would have and enjoy life in overflowing abundance. Let’s do everything we can to obey the Holy Spirit and stay in His Will and enjoy Life, health, and abundance!

As True and Faithful Believers, who continually pray and study God’s Word, we will experience the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives. God rewards those who seek Him with all their Heart, Soul and Mind. As you continue to search God’s Word for His Truth, He will reveal Himself to you. Be confident that God will reward you!

Ephesians: Chapter 1

This book is filled with wisdom, encouragement, and practical teaching about what it means to be a True Christian and how we, the Believers, identified as the church, should operate. Yet it gives us the clear message of how deeply God loves us and how we can receive and enjoy His love, and daily become more strongly established as a Follower of Jesus Christ. It reveals our spiritual blessings, our position of responsibility and authority in Christ, the mysteries of God, our need to walk in love and in His light, and the importance of unity among Believers. In addition, family and personal relationships, how to deal with anger and how to war against the evil powers of the spiritual realm are all covered. It is our prayer that as you study this book, you gain a deeper, richer, personal depth of understanding of God’s incredible unconditional love for you. Seeking to more clearly discover your life’s purpose that He ordained for you before the foundation of the world! We pray you daily seek His Wisdom through His Word and the power of the Holy Spirit who lives within you.

1:1

Paul, identifies himself as an apostle, a messenger, of Jesus Christ; literally, Jesus the Messiah. He was chosen by the Sovereign will of God. The letter was to the saints (believers) at Ephesus and to all the faithful believers in Christ Jesus. The “saints” were chosen by God and were the true believers. The reference to “Jesus Christ” emphasized his Title meaning Messiah. Notice that this letter was to be circulated to all the churches, just as were the Seven letters to the Seven Churches in Revelation. Paul was originally named Saul, after King Saul, who was also a Benjamite. The Benjamites were known for their warrior temperament: feisty and tough. That certainly described Paul! Paul was born in Tarsus as a free-born Roman citizen; he was educated in Hellenistic culture and had Pharisaical training by Gamaliel himself. He was born of privileged Roman citizenship and had a superior education. He was no doubt of a family who was financially well off.

1:2

‘Grace be to you and peace from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.’ Grace is mentioned first, because Grace brings forgiveness of sins; only then can we have true peace. Note that “Lord Jesus Christ” gives His Title, Name and Mission. Paul is inspired by the Holy Spirit to use his talents as an eloquent brilliant writer to reveal incredible Truth to us through God’s Word.
The next few verses give us magnificent praises and sublime heights of words of Worship. Carefully pray and consider memorizing some of the verses 3-14 as we are privileged to have revealed to us God’s activity in Salvation from eternity past, through time, through eternity future, including the mystery of God’s sovereign will for each of us, previously undisclosed.

1:3

May blessing, (praise, honor, and glory) be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ (God and Messiah) Who has blessed us in Christ (Savior/Messiah) with every spiritual blessing (given by the Holy Spirit) in the heavenly realm! Wow! We have blessings available to us we can’t yet even understand or comprehend, yet we are promised them by God in His Word! Think of it, we not only have earthly blessings promised, but now it is revealed we have Heavenly Blessings promised for us. Remember the rewards promised by Jesus for you? The phrase “in Christ Jesus” is used 27 times in this letter! So, who exactly is “in Christ Jesus”? All who are united with Jesus by being born again and becoming a part of the Body of Christ; all through the power of the Holy Spirit. (See 1 Corinthian 12: 12-13) The finished work of Jesus on the Cross has put us in the position of being “in Christ Jesus”. Those who have refused to accept Jesus as Lord, God and Savior; confessing their sins AND repenting of them; are NOT in Christ Jesus. All God’s promises are for the True believer, not those who merely say they are “Christians”. Remember, your actions reveal the Truth!

1:4

God chose us before the foundation of the World. We were chosen to be “in Christ Jesus” before the World was created. God’s Love redeemed us. True, we must accept our redemption, yet it is still His Gift to us. Then we are adopted as His children, forever. God tells us we did not choose Him, He chose us! (John 15:16) A sinner, left to himself, does not seek God. (Romans 3:10-11) God, out of His Love, seeks the sinner (Luke 19:10) This offer of salvation is to EVERYONE! (John 3:16, 3:36, 5:24: Romans 10:9, 13, etc.) Remember, the lost choose to stay lost. A clue to the secret? Because God knows the future, He knows exactly who will be obedient and accept His Mercy and Grace. Yet, the choice still remains ours. All people can know IF they are chosen by God by their own response. Those who hear, believe, and obey are the “Elect, or chosen”. (1Thessalonians 1:4-7) God’s purpose for us will not be completely realized until we are with Him in heaven (1 John 3:2). That purpose is to be “Holy and Blameless before Him in love.” We will then be “glorified”. Election: The term refers to both divine volition and human choice. God will never FORCE anyone to believe in Him and follow Jesus.

1:5-6

God predestinated (foreordained) us to a place of adoption as His very own children, through Jesus Christ. WOW! We can hardly take this Truth in. We are adopted as God’s sons and daughters? Yes! Why would God do that, when we deserve death? Because of the good purpose of His will. God plans only good for us ~ Eternal good, what is best for us forever. God will surround Himself with sons and daughters, conformed to the image and likeness of His only begotten Son, Jesus. How can this happen? We make the choice to obey the Holy Spirit and follow God’s revealed Will. The greatest mistake a Christian can make is to substitute your will for the will of God. Now, we see WHY it is so crucial to seek to know the will of God. We are to be the Praise of His Glory; all because of His Grace, through His Beloved Son, Jesus. Think of it this way: God loves us as greatly as He loves His Son, or He never would have permitted Jesus to die for us. (John 17:23-24)

1:7-9a

We now have salvation, which is redemption and deliverance through the blood of Jesus, giving us forgiveness of our sins and offenses, all in accordance with the riches and generosity of His gracious favor. God Himself lavished all this upon us in His wisdom and understanding, making known to us the mystery, or secret, of His Perfect Will; that is, His Perfect Plan and Purpose for us. So, we, as sinners, have been given the free Gifts of Mercy and Grace which allows us to be forgiven of ALL our sins and failures, now and forever; through the sacrifice of Jesus shedding His blood on the cross in complete payment of the penalty of ALL our sins. We were trapped in our sins, guaranteed to go to hell to be tormented and suffer forever, and worse, to be forever separated from God. Yet our death sentence was “purchased through His blood” (1 Peter 1:18, Hebrews 9:22). And what can we give God in thankfulness for all this? “We love Him only because He first loved us.) Perspective is crucial. We are slowly being sanctified through the Truth of God’s Grace. Only His Grace gives us the ability to see the ultimate Truth of Eternity and then make the right faith choices each day to follow His Will. Make no mistake, all the universe is moving toward His ultimate goal, God’s Perfect Will.

1:9b-10

What exactly is the Mystery of His Will? This is the dominant theme of this Epistle, so we don’t want to miss this Truth. God’s Perfect Will is His Perfect Plan to unify all things and bring them together and consummate them in Christ, things in Heaven and things on Earth. We can get a hint of some of these “things”: The Kingdom of Heaven (Matthew 13:5-50). The Church as one Body of Christ (Ephesians 3:1-12, 6:19; Romans 16:25). The Bride of Christ (Ephesians 5:23-32. Christ living in us (Galatians 2:20; Colossians 1:26-27). The Fullness of the Godhead (1Corinthians 2:7, Colossians 2:2,9.). Godliness (1Timothy 3:16) The Rapture of the Believers (1 Corinthians 15:51-52; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-17). The Will of God (Ephesians) The Seven Stars (Revelation 1:20). Note that this is NOT a complete list of all the mysteries of God. Moreover, we, the Believers, are to be Stewards of the Mysteries of God. It is required of a Steward that he/she be found faithful 1Corinthians 4:1-2.

1:11-12

We have been chosen by God to be God’s child. We were selected by the Creator of the Universe, before time began, to be His beloved child. Even though He knows everything about us, He still chose us to belong to Him. We are the inheritance of Christ. Jesus counts us as His special inheritance. That means we are considered VERY VALUABLE! Do you feel Loved and Valuable? You should; a very high price was paid for you. Say out loud, every day, “I, then say your name, belong to God.!” Do you realize how powerful that is? Then begin your day by praying for God’s divine Guidance and Direction so that ALL you do, say and even think, would bring God Glory, Honor and Praise. As you begin your day, think “is what I’m planning to do going to Honor and Glorify God?” This will help you stay in God’s Perfect Will. All this for what? So that we who believe in and Hope in Jesus Christ, have been predestined to live for the Praise of His Glory. We are predestined to be Glorified with Jesus Christ!

1:13

We have heard and believed the Word of Truth, Jesus Christ; the glad tidings (the Gospel) of our salvation and have believed in and obeyed and relied totally on Him. We are sealed with the Holy Spirit. So, we believe the Truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ; that He died on the cross for our sins; we confess and repent of our sins; we are given the Holy Spirit to live within our souls. We are now owned by God. (Jeremiah 32:11-12, 2 Timothy 2:19) We have Eternal Security. God guarantees we are His (Ephesians 4:30, 1 Corinthians 1:22, John 6:27)

1:14

The Holy Spirit living within us is the guarantee of our Eternal Inheritance (rewards). Our continual Sanctification is orchestrated by the Holy Spirit living within us. It is our choice to obey and follow God’s Will for our lives, becoming more and more like Jesus; or to disobey and quench the Holy Spirit. Our growing and becoming is dependent on our obedience. We anticipate the full redemption and acquiring and possessing that Eternal Inheritance. (Full Glorification and rewards)

1:15-18

For this reason, because I have heard of your Faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, (Note that each verse from 15 to 21 is only a part of a powerful and revealing prayer.) I continually give thanks for you, mentioning you in my prayers. (Do we thank God for other Believers?) I pray to the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Eternal Father of Glory that He may grant you a spirit of wisdom, the Holy Spirit; which provides special revelation and understanding; for proper and wise use in our lives; into the deep and intimate knowledge of God, (This special revelation is to be used to deepen our understanding and wise obedience of God). By having the eyes of your heart flooded with light, so that you can know and understand the hope to which He has called you; (This enlightenment comes directly from the Holy Spirit and is not discerned by non-believers. They cannot understand God’s Truth.)

1:19-21

So that you can know and comprehend with total understanding what is the immeasurable, unlimited and surpassing greatness of His power in us and for us as Believers; demonstrated in the working of His mighty strength, (Obviously the Creator of the Universe can and will work His power in each of us to accomplish His goals for us) Which He exerted in Christ Jesus when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His own right hand in the Heavenly places, (Jesus being raised from the dead and being given His place at the Father’s right hand is confirmed)
Far above all rule and authority and power and dominion and every name that is named above every title that can be conferred, not only in this age and this world, but also in the age and the world which is to come. (Here we see a clear reference to the fallen angels mentions in Romans 8); as well as the future age and world which will be created after the millennium.

1:22

And He (God the Father) has put all things under His (Jesus) feet and has appointed Him (Jesus) the universal and supreme Head of the church. Jesus is always the head of all True Churches. Remember, the ‘Church’ is the True and faithful ‘Body of Christ’, not a building or denomination.

1:23

The Church is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all. (In the True Church, Body of Christ, lives the full expression or measure of Jesus Himself; He alone makes everything complete.) This confirms that we are to represent Jesus here on earth; we are His Church.

As you diligently seek to know God and His purpose for your life, take the time and effort to look up all the scriptures referenced in this study. The Holy Spirit will reveal His will for your life as you prayerfully and diligently seek to know and serve your Savior! God knows exactly what is best for you. Why would you settle for less than best for yourself? As you respond and obey, in Faith; the rewards are TRULY ‘out of this world’!

Ephesians: Introduction

Background of the Book of Ephesians:

The City of Ephesus was the capital of Proconsular Asia, second only to Rome. The city was consecrated to the false goddess Artemis, a.k.a. Diana. The temple took 220 years to build, being 418 ft. x 239 ft; with 127 56 ft. columns; it was four times larger than the Parthenon and stood until 262 A.D. when it was ruined by the Goths. The Theater, which was excavated on the west side of Mt. Croesus, was the largest in the Hellenic world, seating 50,000 people. It was colonized mainly from Athens. There were great painters and educators in Ephesus. The Great harbor was gradually ruined by the silting of the River Cayster. Note that Paul stayed longer in Ephesus than in any other place. We may assume that the Gospel may have been more effective in this area than any other place or time in the history of the world.

About A.D. 51, Paul visited Ephesus (Acts 18:18-21), bringing Aquila and Priscilla and leaves them there. Paul’s 2nd visit lasts 3 years; A.D. 54-57; and Ephesus emerges as the headquarter church in Proconsular Asia (Acts 29:20-31). There were 14 key churches: the seven of Revelation, plus Troas, Assos, Adramyttium, Miletus, Trogyllium, Hierapolis and Colossae. 1 Corinthians was written here; this period closed with the tumult raised by Demetrius (Acts 19:19-41).

Paul lands at Miletus, 30 miles south of Ephesus in A.D. 58; meeting leaders away from the crowd and presents the pathetic yet noble charge of Acts 20:18-35. The Pastoral Epistles A.D. 63 where Paul exhorts Timothy to stay on at Ephesus (1Tim. 1:3) Ephesus is twice mentioned in 2 Timothy. Paul may have been seized here at Ephesus and taken back to Rome.

Paul arrived in Rome in the spring of A.D. 61, nearly 10 years after his first visit. Paul spent two years in “house arrest” chained to a Praetorian sentinel (Acts 28) Also see (Phil. 4:21, 22.) The following people visited him in prison and carried the “Prison Epistles” to Asia in the year A.D. 62: Tychicus, who brought this epistle. Epaphras, from Colossae, who brought the Epistle to the Colossians (col 4;12). Epaphroditus, from Philippi who carried the Epistle to the Philippians; (Phil 4:18). Onesimus, the fugitive Colossian slave who brought the Epistle to Philemon, his master. John’s Epistles may have also been written near here. Patmos was within 60 miles of Ephesus. Note that John wrote first to Ephesus: See Rev. 2: 1-7.

Ephesians Overview

God’s unconditional Love is shown by His sacrifices on our behalf. Love pours forth in this book with an emphasis on how we receive and enjoy His love, becoming increasingly rooted and grounded in Jesus.

Ephesians 1-3: Doctrine: Our position through God’s Grace ~ what we are in Christ; what He did.

Ephesians 4-6: Duty: Our responsibilities and privileges ~ what we should do in response. Notice responsibilities and privileges go hand in hand.

Paul emphasized balance ~ Doctrine with Duty. We inherit the wealth of Christ by Faith, and we invest the wealth by works. Believers are urged to enter by Faith into the possession of their promised inheritance. Note that what you truly Believe is shown by your Faith; Faith is proved by your actions according to what you claim to believe. Remember, Faith without Action, is dead. James 2:14-20.

Salvation: Justification is being made right with God through the sacrifice on the cross made by Jesus, (Jesus actually died for us, we are forgiven!); then Sanctification (our lifelong calling ~ living out our Faith since sin no longer has power over us); then Glorification, (Perfection, our final inheritance in Heaven with Jesus!)
