Hebrews Chapter 4

Entering God’s Rest

4:1

THEREFORE; Once again we see the building of our Faith on what we have previously learned by the use of the word ‘Therefore’. Therefore, because of the Truth that God’s promise remains and is still offered to us today; let us all be afraid, actually this means terrified, of thinking that we might be judged to have fallen short of receiving the promise of entering into God’s Rest. Why or how would we “fall short” of receiving His promise of Rest? Do you have rest today? Are you literally “Resting in Christ Jesus”? Or are you anxious, fearful, worried, struggling, exhausted, tense and irritated? Do any of these verbs describe your feelings or responses to your situation? Do you distrust His promise? If we really believed Jesus, we would be ENTERING His Rest! Now, most of us are thinking, “That’s crazy! How can I ‘rest’ when such and such is happening?” When Jesus spoke of “His rest”, He did not mean at ease, or relaxing, or taking it easy. The word often means the cessation of activity. Stop what you are doing. He specifically referred to Resting, or completely Trusting in Him, it is tied to our inheritance with Christ. We enter into a Faith/life Rest of continuously trusting in Jesus. (Note: The word Rest will be explored further as we continue our study of Hebrews.) If we are anxious and fearful, we really and truly DON’T TRUST JESUS! So, we need to immediately seek Jesus. We ask the Holy Spirit, within us, to calm us down, confess our sins, repent, seek forgiveness; then pray, read God’s Word and TRUST IN HIM to resolve, or guide you through, the situation you are facing. Sometimes, we need to step back and pray fervently for Jesus to intervene and we do nothing actively, that is physically, until we are CERTAIN that God wants us to DO something. If we step in, without direction from God, we often make matters worse. Sometimes we try to alleviate the sufferings of others, when that very suffering is being used by God to bring that person to Him. We actually interfere with the working of the Holy Spirit. Yes, it is hard to see those you love suffer, yet we know that God is in charge, and lessons sometime need to be learned the hard way, even for ourselves! No! We don’t want to hear that do we? If we have begun our day with Jesus, in prayer, then we know whatever is happening around us is part of His plan, no matter what it is, He can use it for our ultimate benefit. Just think about it for a minute, don’t you REALLY want what is ultimately best for you, and those you love, for all eternity?

TRUTH: A man is truly wise who would give up what he knows he will ultimately lose, for that which he knows he will never lose. Our Faith, lived out in obedience, will bring us God’s Rest.

4:2

The Gospel was preached to the Israelites of old? The Truth that was brought to the Israelites in the desert, was God’s Truth. This Truth pointed to their coming Messiah. God revealed Himself in miracles, in His redeeming them from their bondage and slavery of Egypt. The redemption pointed to Jesus’ redemptive work on the cross for all of mankind. He redeems us from the slavery of sin. Yet, despite all the miraculous care God provided for them, they doubted His promises and disobeyed. The final disobedience was in Numbers 13 and 14. Twelve men came back from the promised land with their report. Two gave God’s Truth, the others looked at the circumstances only and gave a bad report. The Israelites chose to believe the bad report, rather than trust in God to keep His Word and give them the promised land. As a result they were cursed to roam the desert for 40 years, until all the original Israelites who left Egypt had died. The result of disobedience can be devastating. God’s Truth of the Gospel, that is, the Truth that Jesus came to earth as the Messiah, the perfect God/man, taught us His Truth; He suffered and died on the cross for our sins; then rose from the dead on the third day; appeared to His disciples, teaching and training them (and us) ~ all this is the Truth. However, this Truth does us no good, if we fail to believe it in Faith and obedience. So it was with the Israelites, they failed to truly believe God and thus failed to enter into His Rest of entering the promised land.

4:3

As we study about God’s Rest, we are told that as Believers we do enter His Rest. Yet we are reminded that the Israelites were told that in God’s anger He swore they would not enter His rest. God’s Rest already existed. The Jewish Bible states that it is “We who have Trusted that enter the rest.” Notice that the entering into God’s Rest is a continuous action. Just as we are continuously obeying the Holy Spirit within us, we are entering into His Rest. The life of a true Believer is one of constant change and growth, of becoming more like Christ. The Sanctification process requires us to rest in Christ. Just as God is still working, yet He is the source of the Rest.

4:4

Remember He entered into His Rest on the Seventh Day, after creating the Universe. (Gen. 2:1-4) Eventually, we, as faithful believers, will enter this Rest. Some believe that this complete “Rest” will only be a reality when we enter into the Messianic Age or Millennium age, the thousand years when Jesus rules on earth.

4:5

The writer is now quoting the loss of their rest from Psalm 95:11. He links the ‘Rest of God’ with the ‘Sabbath Rest’ at the time of Creation with the ‘Rest’ the Israelites forfeited in the desert. He wants to make certain the readers understand how important this Truth is so that they do not lose or jeopardize their Rest in Christ. God decreed that the Israelites would miss their Rest, and He also decrees we will miss our Rest IF we are disobedient and fail to Trust Him. Are we beginning to understand the seriousness of entering into God’s Rest?

4:6

Because of disobedience and unbelief the Israelites failed in their Faith and lost the opportunity of entering into God’s Rest. Yet we are told that some may, or must, enter into His Rest. These are those who obey God’s word in Faith and Truth. This ongoing offer of entering into God’s Rest is for us, right now. We can chose to believe and obey in Faith, and enter into His blessings of Rest. Are we beginning to see how belief and obedience are tied together?

4:7

The writer again reminds us of the TODAY theme. Do it Today, don’t put it off. Today is the day of Salvation. We even have a saying “Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do Today.” Good advice, especially in the spiritual realm. The famous Rabbi Eliezer told his talmidim (these were dedicated full time students who lived full time with him) to “Repent one day before you die”. They objected to his advice, by saying “But, we don’t know when we will die!” So the Rabbi explained “All the more reason to repent and obey today, lest you die tomorrow. This way your entire life will be one of repentance!” Not “hardening our hearts” means our hearts are soft and open to hearing God’s Word and obeying. The Rabbi’s teaching sounds like wise advice for us.

4:8

Y’oshua is the same name as the Hebrew Yeshua. Yeshua, or Jesus, in Greek. Some Bibles translate it as Joshua, others believe it should be Jesus. Yet the context of the scripture indicates it was referring to Joshua giving them “rest” in the promised land. Yet, Joshua knew they would disobey and lose the promises of God. Joshua, the son of Nun, prefigured the Messiah whose name he shared. In many ways we see Joshua prophetically acting out, or giving a glimpse, of the future of the Messiah, Yeshua.

4:9

The ‘rest’ for the Jews had been ordained as the Sabbath, or Saturday. The Jews were fanatical by their obedience to the Sabbath rituals. This meant absolutely no type or kind of ‘work’ could be done. As Jews, the Hebrew Believers were probably forced to continue to observe this Jewish law of the Sabbath. To ignore it meant severe punishment and perhaps death. The Jewish community was tight knit and it would have been very difficult for these Jewish Believers to ignore this and other Jewish law requirements.

4:10

The Believer who enters into God’s Rest ceases from the weariness and struggles of human work. We are warned that we need to rest from our work, just as God rested from His Creation work. We can take this as God telling us to rest at least one day a week (in their time it was to be the Sabbath rest) from our own work. We know that working too much is not good for us. Our bodies and minds need rest from work. We also need time to be alone with God. Remember, Jesus often went alone to a place to pray and rest. Beware of thinking that you can get in your “prayer time” while continuing to work. Jesus didn’t, so neither should we. Stopping, resting and praying is the best way to really focus on God.

4:11

It almost seems as though we are being urged to work at resting! Really, the writer is strongly encouraging us to set aside time, or commit and schedule time for God. This would mean prayerfully entering into God’s Rest. How? By first praying, then carefully reading His Word to hear what God would say to you. Listen for the Holy Spirit to speak to you from His Word. Try beginning each day with prayer and reading God’s Word. Seek to hear Him speak to you. Be diligent and faithful about your commitment to obey God.

4:12

We are reminded that God’s word is LIFE. Jesus is the Word of God. His Word is Alive and speaks to us Today. God’s Word is so discerning that It penetrates like a sharp two edged sword (think of it as sharper than a razor blade) into our hearts, minds and souls; revealing everything. When Jesus returns to earth a sharp sword comes from His mouth! This means His very Word reveals and controls everything. If we approach God’s Word expecting Him to reveal His Truth to us, we must be prepared for the Holy Spirit to show us areas of sin that we need to repent of. Then we must immediately repent, turn away from whatever sin is revealed. We must have open hearts, minds and spirits; be willing to let God penetrate deeply into our lives, our thoughts, our desires. Our true inner reflections and attitudes of hearts will be revealed and judged. We must be totally honest, confess our sinful attitudes and selfishness and be willing to repent and change. The Power of God’s Word not only reveals Truth about ourselves, it also heals us. We confess and repent and we are forgiven! Why would we want to cling to a miserable sin and not confess and repent? Nothing is hidden from God; not even sins we are unaware of! God knows us better than we know ourselves; He knows our very thoughts and even why we are thinking the way we do. To get an even clearer and better perspective of the power of God’s Word see: Isaiah 49:2 & 55:11; Jeremiah 23;29; Psalm 149:6-9; Ephesians 6:17; Revelation 1:16 & 2:16 & 9:20, 21 & 19:11-15.

4:13

Everyone and everything is known by God and is in existence because of His Power. We are all clearly and completely exposed before our God and Creator. So God will someday ask each of us to give a complete account of our entire lives. We have no choice, we MUST account for everything! (See Romans 14:10-12; 2 Corth. 5:10) If our lives are marked by failures we have been warned against, we will suffer loss of our reward/inheritance. (See 1 Corth 3:11-15) We must remain loyal to God. (Rev 2:1-3) Remain faithful 9Rev 2:8-110. Be spiritually zealous (Rev 2:19) Not deny Jesus Christ (Rev 3:8, 10) Not defile our garments (Rev 3:4) Keep the Word of His patience (Rev 3;10) The readers of this Epistle must have been very concerned, if not terrified by this point! Because they are told they will each be judged by Yeshua/God. However, we know that becoming Sanctified means we are Partaking, or entering into his Rest, which leads to Overcoming sin, which leads to Inheriting alongside Jesus! Fervently seek God’s cleansing forgiveness and as you do you will enter into His Rest.

4:14

Now the writer assures them that Yeshua, the Son of God, has already become their Great High Priest! He has already died on the cross for their sins, and is now in Heaven. We already know and understand that Jesus is our High Priest. He is our Savior and Lord. He alone is the One Who gives us Eternal Life. There is absolutely no other way into Eternal Life. In fact, all other ways lead to Hell and the Eternal Lake of Fire, damnation, suffering and agony, forever. The writer reminds them that Yeshua is their High Priest, not the earthly “high priest” serving in the Temple. He urges them to hold fast to their Faith in Yeshua. In fact, that earthly high priest was soon to be removed and the Temple destroyed, as we know happened in 70 A.D..

4:15

Now the writer goes on to encourage them that Yeshua, as High Priest, understands their weaknesses and failures. He suffered in all areas of His life on earth just as we have, yet He never sinned. Only Jesus knows the full force and power of temptation because only He has always resisted it. Yet He alone has the greatest compassion on sinners; freely accepting the sinners confession and repentance, granting full and complete forgiveness. Jesus is our intercessor before God as well as our advocate. He gives us His Holy Spirit to stand strong against the enemy, which is sin. We have His power against temptation and sin, yet, we must use it. We must put on the whole armor of God. (See Ephesians 6:10-18)

4:16

Therefore, Now the author summarizes what we are to do. Now that we understand all these Truths, we can boldly and confidently enter into the throne room of God; with Jesus as our Advocate, Savior, and Lord; with the strength and courage provided by the Holy Spirit dwelling within us. The Jews had been trained and taught from childhood that ONLY the High Priest could enter into the “Holy of Holies”. Only the High Priest could give the sacrifice for sins and confess the peoples sins. Now, they can realize that Yeshua IS their High Priest, and they, and we, as His followers, can also enter into the Holy of Holies, the very throne room of God; the throne of Mercy, Grace and Forgiveness. We can speak to God directly. We can Praise Him, Honor Him, Glorify Him and confess to Him, and seek and receive His forgiveness. (See Romans 8:1)

Hear the Word of God: If you feel worn out and frazzled, at your wits end, then God is urging you to enter into His Rest. Quit your struggling. When we enter into His Rest we will experience peace and confidence, knowing in our soul and spirit that Jesus is in control. We can be certain and sure that Jesus will take care of us and meet our needs. Our minds will focus on Jesus and His Eternity, not on the turmoil surrounding us. We will relax and Praise and Glorify Him regardless of our circumstances. We will gladly ‘allow’ Jesus to control His world and seek His Will for our lives.

Hebrews Chapter 3

Becoming Faithful and Obedient

THEREFORE! NOW THAT WE KNOW THESE TRUTHS… (from Chapters One and Two) WHAT EXACTLY HAVE WE LEARNED? We’ve learned, and been reminded, of the wonderful Truth that Jesus, our Messiah, is much greater than angels or even the greatest of all apostles or prophets. Jesus, is the very Son of God ~ God Himself! Jesus created us, the universe and everything in existence. Not only did He create everything, He holds everything in existence by His Power and Might. He also knows everything, past, present and future. Even more than this, he controls everything now and forever. More than all this, He created us for His own special children, to bring honor and glory to Himself; even the angels were created to minister to us! Wow! God has even been so gracious as to carefully remind us about “drifting away” from His Truth and divine guidance. We can hardly take all this in, it staggers our imagination and comprehension to even begin to understand the implications of these Truths. Yet, because we KNOW and understand, by His Word, that all of this is true and accurate, we now must chose how we will respond. So, will we seek to know Him through our Bible study and obedience to the Holy Spirit, or will we seek our own selfish agendas?

3:1

“Therefore, brothers whom God has set apart”, This opening statement clearly shows that the writer is addressing true Believers, as they are called “brothers” and noted as ones “whom God has set apart”. This would mean they are special believers, actually consecrated and called for a special purpose. “Who share in the call from Heaven”, We now know that ALL Believers are set apart and called to become like Jesus. That is also OUR call from Heaven. We are to share the Truth of God’s Gospel with everyone. We are to disciple all those whom God has called to be His children. We ourselves were discipled by others, now we, in turn, must take up the call from God and disciple those who come after us. This is our life calling, our privilege as children of God, and the only way we will bring glory, honor and praise to our Savior and Lord. This “fruit of discipleship” is how we respond to God’s Love for us. Now we are told to “think carefully about Yeshua, whom we acknowledge publicly as God’s emissary and cohen gadol” (which in Hebrew is High Priest). This means that we also are to carefully and thoughtfully consider Jesus as OUR High Priest. Remember, we have already confessed and embraced Jesus as our Savior and Lord when we became ‘born again’ Believers.

3:2

Jesus was faithful to God in every area and aspect of His life. That is why He stated that He did only that which God willed. He did nothing of Himself, only that directed by His Father. Only when we do exactly what God directs us, are we completely in His Will. What a wonderful, privileged, safe place to be, in God’s Will. Think about it, Jesus never sinned because He was NEVER out of God’s Will. The writer reminds them that Moses was faithful in all God’s house. He is quoting from Numbers 12:7. Yet, Moses did not do everything exactly to God’s Will. Yet, of all the old testament Saints, Moses was the most revered to the Jews.

3:3

Yet, or But; it’s like saying Now hear this! Jesus deserves far more honor than Moses. Jesus is not even on the same level with Moses! Just as Jesus was not even on the same level with angels. Then the writer uses a simple, yet poetic play of the word “house”, to give an analogy for a comparison to Jesus and Moses. The architect, or builder, of a house deserves more honor than the house itself. We know that ‘His house’ was the ‘house of Israel’ which was a reference to the redeemed people of Israel. Remember, that the Jews were well aware of the miraculous hand of God on Moses from the very beginning. As a baby he was preserved from certain death by a miracle of God; protected from his enemies by miracle after miracle of God; all the way to his death, and then God personally digging his grave and burying Moses. So no other man was more revered by the Jews than Moses. Note that Moses also honors God more than any other man. Moses led the Israelites to the promised land; Jesus leads us to Eternal Glory in Heaven. All Moses did pointed to Jesus; Who brings us to the Eternal promised land.

3:4

Why? Because all houses are built by someone. The beauty, design and function of the house is because the designer gave it all those attributes. So it is with God, He built and designed everything (and all of us). Remember, even the abilities and creativeness of the human designer of the house all came from God! God is our Creator and our Designer! Never take credit for the talents and gifts you have; as ALL came from your Creator!

3:5

Now the writer reminds them, and us, that Moses was a servant of God, faithful in all his house. Moses was a servant witness to things that God would reveal in the future through Jesus. We know that Jesus is the very Son of God. If you want a comparison between son and servant, see Gal. 4:1-7; and John 15:15. Also note that a servant, or steward of the house, must be found faithful. (1 Cor. 4:2) The Jews would have been familiar with all the Jewish writings that identified the coming Messiah as having the “Spirit of Adonai” from Isaiah 11:2. Even Genesis 1:2 alludes to the spirit of the Messiah by saying that the “Spirit of God (Adonai) hovered over the face of the waters.” Note that the outpouring of the Holy Spirit is likened to water, which is often used to denote repentance. Baptism is just an outward sign of the inward repentance; washing ones sins away, etc. We see the clear ties of Spirit ~ Water and repentance ~ and forgiveness ~ all bringing us to a personal relationship with our Savior, Jesus.

3:6

Yeshua, the Messiah, was faithful over God’s house; and we are that house, IF…. There are three ‘houses’ which are mentioned seven times. House of Israel; a redeemed people (Ex. 14;31; 15:13) Household (or family) of God; House of God (as the Holy Spirit indwells us). IF we hold firmly to the confidence of faith, rejoicing courageously and inspired (by the Holy Spirit) of the Hope until the end. The role of a true servant is faithfulness. The apostle must be faithful. The true Believer must be faithful. IF we really believe what we claim to believe, WE WILL BE FAITHFUL TO THE END. Do we stumble and fall? Yes, but we immediately confess and repent and seek God’s forgiveness, healing and restoration, and then seek to obey Him.

A brief comparison of Moses and Jesus:
Moses Jesus
An Apostle The Apostle
Sinful Sinless
A Prophet of God’s Truth Truth Himself
Member of his house The House (Temple)
involved in a single house All Houses
Man of God God Himself

A servant God’s Son
Built Earthly Tabernacle Eternal dwelling
Testified of God The Word of God
Led through wilderness Leads to Glory
Delivered Israel from Egypt Delivered Man from Hell

3:7

THEREFORE, (Again the writer is building on the Truth’s that we just heard and learned) “As the Holy Spirit says, Today, IF you hear God’s voice”, In order to hear His Voice, we must be listening. How do we “listen” for God’s Voice? Several ways: We pray; we read His Word, seeking to hear Him speak to our hearts and minds. We strive diligently to hear the Holy Spirit speak to our spirit and soul; then we obey. Notice that there is no secret ‘formula’ or ‘trick’ to hearing God’s voice. There is only prayer and faithful study of His Word; always seeking to hear the Holy Spirit leading us, guiding us, urging us to do God’s Will. Not sure what God’s Will is for you? Then go back to the basics of praying, studying His Word and obeying what He reveals to you. Why should we read God’s Word as IF God were speaking to us? Because the writer just told us “As the HOLY SPIRIT says”. It was not Moses, or the author of Moses, who was doing the speaking, it was God Himself! As we read and study God’s Word, we must remember it is God who is speaking to us! Pray God’s Word, out loud, into your life, and the lives of your loved ones. So, IF YOU chose to ignore God’s clear warnings to you, or ignore His directives, He will withdraw Himself from revealing Himself any further. We ABSOLUTELY MUST OBEY. When we feel God has abandoned us, we must be honest and search our hearts and souls; are we praying His Word, studying His Word, and obeying Him?

Now the writer quotes directly from Psalm 95:8-11. This Psalm makes reference to two earlier situations: Exodus 17:1-7 and Numbers 20:1-13.

3:8

Don’t harden your hearts. How do we do that? We harden our hearts by refusing to hear and obey God’s Word. We actually quench the Holy Spirit within us. We actually reject God. We turn from God to Satan. Do we realize what we are doing? We turn away from Goodness and Light and embrace and welcome darkness and evil. We chose Satan over Jesus. We support all that is hurtful, painful, degrading, murderous, vicious, all the characteristics of evil flesh mentioned in Galatians 5:19-21. We join in the rebellion against God and provoke and cause God grief and suffering. Can we really grieve the God of the Universe? Unfortunately, we can, and we do. Each time we disobey God we bring Him sorrow and grief. Each time we obey Him we bring Him joy and praise. We have free will, God did not make us robots. So our choices to obey God or reject Him brings God either joy or sorrow.

3:9

Now the writer goes on to recall exactly what happened. He calls the Jews of long ago ‘your fathers’ causing them to identify with their ancestors. He reminds them that they challenged God and put Him to the Test, and yet they saw His works and miracles for forty years. We think “how foolish, after being delivered from Egypt and seeing miracle after miracle.” Yet think for a moment, don’t we know about ALL God’s miracles; from Genesis to Revelation? And yet what do we do, how do we respond to God’s Goodness, Grace, Mercy and Love? By disobedience! We are no better than they were; we harden our hearts. Now is the time to do some serious soul searching.
10. Next we are told what God’s response was. That He was provoked, grieved and sorrowed over their disobedience and disbelief. He said they always made the wrong choices and were led astray in their hearts. They did not perceive or recognize the value and Truth of God’s ways; nor did they learn from their mistakes; repent, and become better people by obeying God’s commands. We also learn to be obedient by obeying. Each time we make a choice to do the right thing, to reject the temptation, God causes us to become more like Him. Our character and integrity of soul and spirit slowly become more and more like Jesus. We develop good character traits by obeying God and making godly choices. We do not instantly become like Jesus, it is a slow process of obedience. Step by step, prayer after prayer, Bible study after Bible study. One choice at a time. As we make steady progress in obeying God, those daily choices become good habits of obedience rather than bad habits of disobedience and sin. Each time we face temptation we can say in our hearts: ‘Do I want to grieve my Lord and Savior, or do I want to please Him?’ Today, right now, commit in your heart to obey Jesus, and bring Him joy. Remember, choose Jesus, NOT Satan!

3:11

The writer reminds us that God swore in His wrath and indignation that those who were disobedient would not enter into His rest. In reality, those who originally left Egypt (except Joshua and Caleb) were doomed to wander in the wilderness for forty years. They all eventually died in the wilderness; only the ‘new generation’ entered into the Promised land with Joshua and Caleb. The disobedient never entered into the promised land, nor did they enter into God’s rest. This ‘rest’ is not ease, or physical rest, rather it is a complete Trust and confidence in God. No matter what situation we are in we can ‘rest in Christ Jesus’ knowing He has everything in control. We will more fully explore this ‘resting in Jesus’ as we continue our study of Hebrews.

3:12

So we, as Believers, are strongly warned to watch out and beware of having an unbelieving evil heart. A heart that refuses to trust in Jesus, to rely on Jesus, to seek after Jesus and obey Him. A heart that could lead us to apostatize from the Living God. We would be like deserters of the Faith, denying the Truth of the Gospel. This is a very serious matter, and we should take this warning to heart and pray that none of us would ever disobey the Holy Spirit and find ourselves denying our Lord and Savior. We hear the term ‘backslider’ and know that term refers to one who is disobeying God and acting as if Jesus didn’t die for them. We never know what is in a person’s heart, but we can see the result in their actions and lifestyle. Pray fervently for anyone you know who may appear to have an unbelieving heart.

3:13

Instead we are admonished to warn others, seeking to encourage and urge them to trust in Jesus. We are to encourage one another every day so that none of us would become discouraged and fall into disobedience and rebellion. The Temptation of sin deceives people into doing evil. The evil one uses trickery and lies to delude us into thinking that sin is glamorous or fun; when all it will bring in the end is pain and sorrow.

3:14

Remember, that we are to become inheritors with our Messiah, provided that we hold firmly to the unwavering conviction we began with when we trusted Jesus as our Lord and Savior. We must be steadfast, committed to following in Jesus’ footsteps right up to the end of our lives; only then will we reach the goal. God has a wonderful plan for your life; but it requires you to trust Him, to obey Him and seek Him with all your heart, soul and mind. When Jesus return to earth with His rewards, you want to hear Him say to you “Well done, good and faithful servant.” Keep Jesus’ Words in your heart and soul. Do this on a daily basis by praying God’s Words into your life. Fix your thoughts on what Jesus has commanded you. That saying “What would Jesus do?” is one to keep in your hearts and minds. Remember, Jesus clearly tells us that we can lose our rewards. We are being warned, right here, that we must be faithful.

3:15

Today, means right now, don’t delay, act immediately, this is urgent! The author again quotes the scripture not to harden our hearts. God is gracious and good, He knows we are weak and lazy, He knows we need repeated warnings and admonishings. He repeats these urgent warnings to us because He knows how weak and feeble our commitments are. We stumble easily, we give up without a fight, we cave in when a simple temptation is put before us. Yet, all the while we criticize others when they stumble and fall. We need to gird ourselves with God’s Truth, we need to take up all the armor God tells us to use; to Pray every single day; Pray His Word into your life; study His Word every single day; seek His guidance and direction through the Holy Spirit every single day. We need to use the shield of Faith every day. Just as we must eat every day, so we MUST pray and study His Word EVERY SINGLE DAY! No exceptions! We need to ask the Holy Spirit to keep our hearts soft and open to His voice. Galatians 6:10-13. We are like little children. We have to be told to do something over and over, we don’t easily obey God. What is wrong with us!?

3:16

We are warned that those who heard God’s Word were the very ones who rebelled and provoked God. These were the same people that God redeemed from Egypt. They were condemned to wander in the wilderness for forty years. The Hebrews who were hearing these words did not realize it, but between the first preaching of the Gospel and the destruction of their beloved Temple, would be forty years; exactly as Jesus had predicted. The exact same number of years their disobedient forefathers wandered in the desert. We must heed these warnings!

3:17-18

The writer again reminds them that those who had sinned and believed not; who had murmured and complained, not trusting Him, all had died in the wilderness and had not been allowed to enter into His rest. God was grieved by them for forty years. He again is grieved by the unbelief of His chosen people; not just for forty years, but right up to our present day. What about us, are we grieving Him? Time for more soul searching.

3:19

Because of their unbelief and disobedience, they lost their reward, and were not allowed into the Promised Land, nor to enter into God’s rest. The people were not sent back to Egypt, so they were still God’s people, yet they lost God’s Blessings and their reward.

God in His infinite Love and Mercy has warned us of the coming dangers that accompany apostasy. The loss of Rewards and Rest clearly apply to us. Believers are urged to stand fast and persevere to obtain all God has promised to the faithful Overcomer. Jesus will judge our motives and obedience to the call of the Holy Spirit on our lives. We know the Truth and we must act on His Word. May God grant us soft and obedient hearts. Begin right now, today, to memorize God’s Word and pray it into your life, and the life of others. Study His Word diligently, seeking to apply it to your life. You will please and honor your Lord, God and Savior! Shalom!

Hebrews Chapter 2

The Purpose, Tragedy & Triumph Expositional Commentary of all History

We are going to discover two marvelous Truths  about Jesus in the Epistle to the Hebrews:  1.  Jesus REVEALS God to man; and 2. Jesus REPRESENTS man before God.   Are we really comprehending the implications of this Truth?   We can only understand God because Jesus has revealed Him to us.   And, Jesus paid the ultimate sacrificial price so that man can be represented to God.  So, how do we respond to this Truth?      With apathy, carelessness, disobedience?    Is that how we show our love and appreciation for our Savior?

The Purpose of All History:

Math. 23:37a: “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, murdering the prophets and stoning those who are sent to you! How often would I have gathered your children together as a mother hen gathers her brood under her wings,…”  Jesus wanted to bring all Israel into a saving relationship with God the Father.

The Tragedy of All History:

Math. 23: 37b, 38  ”…and you refused!  Behold, your house is forsaken and desolate, abandoned and left destitute of God’s help.” (1Kings 9:7; Jer. 22:5) Yet, Israel, as a Nation, rejected their own Messiah and Savior!  So, the result was that the Nation of Israel would be left to be forsaken and abandoned.

The Triumph of All History

Math 23: 39 “For I declare to you, you will not see Me again until you say, ‘Blessed, magnified in worship, adored and exalted is He Who comes in the name of the Lord!’” (Psalm 118:26)

Hosea 5:15: “I will go and return to my place, until they acknowledge their offence, and seek my face: in their affliction they will seek me earnestly.”  The entire Nation of Israel will one day confess and repent of their sin of rejecting their Messiah and will desperately seek Yeshua as their Lord, God and Savior; then, and only then, will Jesus come the Second Time to redeem all of Israel!

The readers of this book, that includes us, are exhorted and warned at least five times to stir themselves up and not “drift away” through complacency, apathy, neglect or disobedience.  Do we hear this warning for ourselves?  Are we taking this seriously?  Our Eternal inheritance is at stake!  We dare not ignore these powerful Words given to us through God’s Word in the Book of Hebrews; or we, too, are in danger of losing our inheritance!  You and I must strive earnestly to be Overcomers!

2:1

“Therefore”,  Now, since we know all this is True … Note the powerful tone of exhortation the writer gives us.  So what should our response be?  He gives it to us: We ought, meaning absolutely MUST, pay much closer attention than ever before to the Truths that we have heard, lest in any way we drift past them and slip away from the Truth.  If we do not diligently apply God’s Word to our very lives, right now, we will let God’s Words drift by us, and God’s Words will slip away from us, actually be lost from our memory, and we will lose our opportunity to obey Jesus and follow in His Footsteps.  We must pick up our cross, repent of our sins, and strive diligently to obey and follow our Lord, God and Savior!  Our inheritance for all Eternity is at stake.  Our identity as His chosen Bride is at stake.  Our Rewards and character traits, our Eternal Glory, ALL ARE AT STAKE!! This is an urgent message to us!  Do you hear God tugging at your heart?  Are you listening to the Holy Spirit plead with you for obedience?  Are you committing yourself to reading, searching and applying God’s Word EVERY SINGLE DAY?!  Or, are you in a state of apathy and disobedience, ignoring the sacrifices, sufferings and death of your Savior?  Only you can know the Truth about your own heart attitude.

2:2

We know with a certainty that the words spoken by the angels; that is, the law; was True and sound.  We also know that every transgression and disobedience received its just deserts; this means those who disobeyed God’s Word, His law, were punished and/or destroyed! (Deut 3:32; Ps 68:17: Acts 7:53: Gal. 3:19, etc.)  People often foolishly think “I got away with it!”  Really?  Does God allow anyone to get away with anything?  Absolutely Never!  Eventually everyone will pay for all sin.  Either we confess our sins, turn away and repent of sin, and accept Jesus’ death on the cross as payment for our sin; or we pay for our sin ourselves; now and forever!  Remember, even though Jesus has forgiven us for our sins, that doesn’t mean we may not have to suffer the consequences of our sin.

2:3

Jesus Himself declared to us that He has given His very Life for us; for our Salvation: Justification, Sanctification and Glorification. He has clearly told us that we MUST OBEY HIM IF WE TRULY LOVE HIM!   All His Apostles, those who knew and followed Him; all have testified to His work of Salvation.  Now, knowing this Truth, how do we expect to escape God’s condemnation and judgement?  Simple, we can’t, it’s impossible!  We doom ourselves by our disobedience. (Math 7:24-27)

2:4

Besides all this overwhelming powerful evidence, God Himself has clearly shown His approval of Jesus by the miracles, signs, wonders, and many other manifestations of His Power.  God has also poured out the Holy Spirit onto the Believers according to His own will.  You and I are recipients of the Holy Spirit.  He lives within every True Believer.  How can we ignore His call on our lives for even a moment?  When we neglect or ignore God’s call to us through His Holy Spirit we are quenching the very Holy Spirit He has so graciously given us!  Do we understand what we are doing?  Do we see our sin of disobedience and neglect?  Do we even care?  May we today, commit ourselves with a new intense and strong Faith and Belief that we can, and will, obey God’s call on our lives.  We pray for one another, that each of us here would strive to truly obey and follow Jesus; moment by moment, day by day, week after week; until we meet Jesus, face to face.

2:5

This language is a bit difficult.  God did not put the angels in charge of the earth.  Nor will He put them in charge of the world to come, that is, the Millennial Kingdom. (This refers to the 1,000 year reign of Jesus Christ on Earth).  Nor will the angels be ruling with Jesus on the New Earth that Jesus promised would someday come.  So who will be ruling with Jesus?  Only those who are judged by Jesus to be the Faithful and True Overcomers.  Those whose works are found to yield righteous fruit.  Anything else is burned up, and the person suffers loss. See: Col 3:23-25, 1 Pet 4;17: Heb. 12:30, Col 3. Etc.  God’s Rewards are based on our faithfulness to what God has called us to do.  Those who ignore God’s calling on their life will lose their rewards!  You WILL NOT LOSE YOUR SALVATION, ONLY YOUR REWARDS! This Truth regarding Rewards is the principal warning of this book of Hebrews, so make every effort to grasp and understand this important Truth!  There are dozens of scriptures that tell us clearly that Jesus WILL Judge our works to see IF we are worthy to rule with Him.  “Well done, good and Faithful servant, now enter into and share the joy and delight of your Lord.  You have been faithful with little, now I will give you much!” Math 25:14-30. Once you begin this study on your own, the Holy Spirit will clearly show you where you are and what you need to do to be obedient and fruitful.  I encourage all of you to review these scriptures and those related to God’s rewards for His Faithful followers.  We all want to be in the category of the True and Faithful Servant!   At least you should be!

2:6

This quotation is from Psalm 8:4-6.  The reference to man, or the son of man, would be to Jesus, who referred to Himself as “the son of man”.  God certainly took care of and provided His Will for His Son.  Paul used the title of “the last Adam” for Jesus.  The ‘first Adam’ lost our dominion over the Earth through sin. As the “last Adam”, Jesus regained dominion over all the Earth, all the angels, all the Universe, everything!

2:7

God made Him, Jesus, a little lower than the angels.  Jesus willingly gave up His position and subjected Himself to a human body, thus making Himself “lower than angels”.   Angels do not experience human pain, suffering and death, Jesus did.  However, at no time did He ever give up His Deity.  Jesus always remained God.  Psalm 8:4-6; Jesus has been crowned with glory and honor and is ruler over everything.

2:8

Although the Earth was to be ruled by man, because of sin, we do not see that rule in a perfect sense.  Yet, ALL, EVERYTHING, IS ruled and controlled by Jesus.  Eventually, when Jesus returns, the rule and control will be perfect; and man will be ruling with Jesus.   Think for just a moment how wonderful things on Earth COULD BE IF we had a perfect ruler!  We would all love being ruled by the King of Kings!  God gives us a glimpse into the future in 1 John 3:2-3: “Beloved, we are now God’s children; it is not yet disclosed and made clear what we shall be hereafter, but we know that when He comes and is manifested, we shall resemble and be like Him, for we shall see Him just as He really is.  Everyone who has this hope resting on Him cleanses and purifies himself just as He is pure, undefiled and guiltless.”  Notice our responsibility, as His children, in 1 John 3:3?  Remember, ONLY those who are ‘born again’ and faithfully follow Jesus, are CHILDREN OF THE FATHER!

2:9

Now we are told clearly that Jesus was made lower than the angels by the suffering of death, yet was crowned with glory and honor. By the very Grace of God, Jesus tasted death, that is He fully experienced every painful terrifying aspect of death, all for the Salvation of every man.  So we see that Jesus did die for every man, yet we know every man has not accepted His death for their sins.

2:10

Only God could, or would, be able to sacrifice Himself through death, to redeem mankind.  Jesus is uniquely qualified because He IS both God and man.  Here we are told that this act is worthy of God, and fitting, because of His divine nature.  Satan was the cause of man’s sin in the first place, and as a usurper, he claims that all sinners must die!  Because of this, all men, because we are sinners, fear death.  We know we must die.  Yet BECAUSE Jesus has now paid our sin penalty of death, we no longer must face eternal death.  We, as true believers, saved by Christ Jesus; are now guaranteed to be brought into glory with God!  Jesus suffered as the “lamb of God” the perfect sacrifice; yet He is also our High Priest.  Jesus came to earth, took on our humanity, suffered our death, and overcame death for all eternity.  Satan no longer has any hold on us.  Oh, he lies and tries to deceive us into thinking he has a hold on us, but we are now free in Christ.  We must apply God’s grace and forgiveness to our lives.

2:11-12

Now, the writer tells us we are brought into an even more privileged position.  As true Believers, we are being sanctified by our Lord and Savior.  For Jesus is the One Who sanctifies us, making us holy.  Yes, we are being sanctified as we obey Him, through the power of the Holy Spirit.  We are told we have one Father, God.  For this very reason, Jesus is not ashamed to call us brothers!  We are ‘one’ with Jesus through the sanctification that He alone has provided for us.  Do we seek to become one with Jesus?  Are we seeking His face, through studying His Word; determined to be like Him, obeying Him in all areas of our lives?  As we obey the promptings of the Holy Spirit and yield our hearts and minds to Jesus, we will experience a closeness, a oneness, with our Lord, God and Savior.  The more we become like Him, the less we seek our own selfish ways.  We seek and want God’s Will to become our will.  We receive the desires of our heart when those desires are God’s will for us.  (12.)  Jesus alone has bridged the gap between God and man.  He, tells us He will declare God’s name to His brothers.  That’s you and I; as true Believers, Jesus calls us His brothers!  In the very lives of the church, (that’s us as Believers, not a building), He will sing hymns of praise to the Father. He is quoting from Psalm 22.  Jesus lived the perfect life; He gave us His very life as a perfect example of how we ARE to live our lives so that we would bring praise and honor to God, our Father.  See Psalm 22:22, 23, 25-31.

2:13

“And again, and again” Each time the writer is quoting from various scriptures, telling us that these are ALL attributed to Jesus, prophetically being fulfilled by Him during their time and in the future.  (Isaiah 8:17, 18) Jesus always trusted His Father in heaven.  Jesus walked the perfect walk of faith, that is exactly what He wants us to do: Walk the walk of faith, in the power of the Holy Spirit.  We are the children God gave to Jesus.  All the prophets spoke of the Lord Jesus.  We are told in the New Testament that the entire Bible speaks of Jesus!  Note that the writer clearly tells us that the Holy Spirit, through God’s Word, has revealed God’s Truth to us.  Maybe this is one of the reasons the author deliberately did not identify himself.  He wanted to make certain that the Hebrew Believers, and those of us who read these truths, would not attribute anything to him, but would attribute all Truth to the Holy Spirit.  That is how we should think of God’s Word: Revealed Truth from the Holy Spirit.

2:14

Therefore,” or Pay attention to this important Truth: Since the children (Believers) also share the same flesh and blood, the same physical nature; that by His (Jesus’) sharing in the same physical nature, and going through death, He has now destroyed any power or effect of Satan over death.  Jesus nullified, or rendered ineffective, any power that Satan had of death over mankind.  This Truth alone should cause all Believers to celebrate with Thanksgiving and Praise!

2:15

Now Jesus has delivered mankind from death; He has completely set free all those, who through the fear of death, were held in bondage throughout their entire lives.   Jesus has freed us from death!  Those who do not accept God’s free gift of salvation are still in the fear and grip of death; they are captives, in bondage to Satan!  Not where any of us want to be.  Why on earth would anyone want to be in the grip and fear of eternal death and suffering?  See Ezekiel 18:4, Rom 6:23, etc.

2:16

Listen to this amazing Truth: Jesus chose not to take on the nature of angels, to save them; but instead took on Himself the nature of man.  That is, the Seed of Abraham.  The Messiah, Yeshua, became man so that He could save and sanctify man and call them brothers.  Through His death he rendered Satan’s power null and void as far as Believers are concerned.  The fear of death always enslaves us.  Now death is not to be feared, it is a means to enter into eternal life.  The work of the Messiah was to benefit man, not fallen angels.  The angels cannot be saved by Christ’s death.

2:17

Now we logically must assume that it is very evident, or proved, that Jesus had to be made like His brothers, mankind, in every respect of life, so that He could become the merciful, sympathetic and faithful High Priest in all things relating to and pertaining to God and His relationship to man.  Every area of life had to be dealt with and addressed successfully by Jesus or His mission to save mankind would not have been successful.  We can not even begin to understand all the ramifications; physically, emotionally and spiritually that are involved in Christ’s mission to save us.  There are so many aspects of salvation that we are just beginning to understand just a small portion of the incredible sacrifice Jesus made to redeem us from an impossible situation.   The more we search God’s Word and learn of Jesus’ sacrifices for us, the more we love and appreciate our Savior.

2:18

Jesus suffered greatly by being tempted; that is severely tested.  We seldom think of being tempted as suffering, but, in truth, that is what it is.  We are tempted, we are “tested”, and we desperately need assistance in resisting the temptation.  How often do we fail “the test”?  If we give in to temptation, we fail the testing.   Why do you think Jesus tells us we must take up our cross and follow Him?  Those temptations that we struggle to overcome are part of the “cross”.  Could Jesus have given in to temptation?  If He had, it would have proved that He was NOT the Messiah.  That is one of the reasons those who hate Christians claim that Jesus “sinned”.  That lie, if true, would negate His being the Messiah; our Lord, God and Savior.

What powerful, incredible Truths are revealed to us in this Chapter.  Review, and pray about each area of Truth.  These reflections should increase your love and appreciation for your Savior, AND at the same time, encourage and strengthen you to resist the devil, and all his lies and temptations.  Having trouble with a particular temptation?  Read aloud this Chapter, praying that the Holy Spirit will give you His power and strength to turn away from evil.

Hebrews Chapter 1

Yeshua IS our Eternal Creator-God!

1:1

This letter was written to the Messianic Jews (Hebrews). The introduction’s immediate focus is God. God spoke in various ways, by audible language, dreams, visions, etc. to reveal Himself and His Truth to the prophets and leaders (Fathers) and to believers in past history. This authenticates that the Bible was written by God; and is therefore True and Accurate. God, the Holy Spirit, inspired the hearts and minds of those whom He instructed to write down His revelation of Himself and Truth. We, as True Believers in Jesus Christ, know and fervently believe God’s Word is absolutely True. God is Truth, and He cannot lie; thus we have the assurance that all the Bible is True!

1:2

Now the author shifts to the present time: Now God (Adonai) has spoken to us by His Son, (Jesus), Whom He has declared to us IS His Son! Notice that immediately the contrast is made between old testament prophets, rulers, etc. to God’s very own Son. To further demonstrate that Jesus is God, the writer states that He (Jesus) created the entire Universe and all life! This Truth is absolute proof that Jesus is God! Thus if Jesus created everything, He obviously owns everything; all Creation belongs to Jesus; including you and me!

1:3

This Son is the radiance of God. It is literally rendered as the Shkhinah Glory of God. Jesus is God’s Divine Presence, Light Itself; clearly being God Himself. This Shkhinah Glory of Light was so brilliant that one could not look upon it directly. When old Testament believers saw God, they actually saw a glimpse of The Glory of God, this intensely brilliant Light. Further, the writer states, with a strong conviction of Truth, that The Son, Jesus, IS the exact perfect Image of God’s Nature. This Son is the One who upholds, maintains, guides, directs and powers the entire Universe by His mighty Word of Power. He Himself had offered Himself as the sacrifice to accomplish our cleansing of sins and deliverance of all guilt. He, Jesus, then sat down at the right hand of the Divine Majesty on high. This denotes a position of Honor and Power with God. Jesus serves as Prophet, King and Priest, being far superior to anyone who ever lived or served in any of these positions. There is no stronger way to describe Jesus, Yeshua, as God Himself.

1:4

Just in case we have somehow missed the clear meaning, the writer goes on to state that He is made so much better than the angels; even though, for a little while, He was made lower than the angels. Yet, Jesus is far above them all. All through the old and new Testaments it is clear that the entire Bible is written to reveal Jesus as the King Messiah, Creator and Ruler of the Universe, Savior of the entire World, and Eternal God forever. Even Jesus said “All of Scripture speaks of me.”

1:5

Think about it, has God ever called an angel “His Son”? (Ps. 2:7, 2Sam. 7:14; 1Cor. 9:4-10, Gal. 3:1-5) The Jews regarded angels as the most exalted of all God’s creatures. God firmly establishes the Truth that Jesus is His Only Begotten Son, God Himself. All this clearly shows that no angel could ever, ever hope to be like God. Even today, “angelology,” is being professed as a form of “religion”. Remember, Satan, a fallen angel, would like to be God, but he cannot. Satan tries to deceive foolish people to be “their own god”, yet they cannot. Those who reject Jesus as Creator, Lord, God and Savior have put themselves in the horrible position of being their own god. If you are your own god, you are in for a horrible, tortuous existence, forever!

1:6-7

Jesus is identified as ‘God’s Firstborn Son’, and is to be worshiped by all His angels. The “Firstborn position” was always a position of high honor. Because of the Jews high regard of angels, we often see old Testament prophets fall down to worship angels; yet, in every single case, the angels tell them NOT to worship them, to worship God only. We are to understand that angels are a very powerful group of beings that are to serve God. God assigns angels to assist us as ministering Spirits. There are ranks of angels, and specific angels are to perform specific tasks assigned by God. Angels have specific characteristics and can assume all kinds of forms and appearances. The writer carefully selects seven Old Testament verses (see the last page) to prove that Jesus is superior to angels. We, and they, are being warned that even angels who chose to disobey God and turn to Pride, becoming selfish, will be destroyed in the Lake that burns with fire. (Mt. 25:41) (7.) Angels serve so powerfully they would be as ‘fiery flames’ and as ‘ the winds’; both powerful, yet invisible.

1:8

Then he immediately contrasts the angels with the Son. (This is again a definite style and contrast that is used by Paul in stating the fundamental truth of an argument). “Your Throne, O God, is forever; and the scepter of Your Kingdom is a scepter of absolute righteousness.” This is a quotation from Psalm 45, which clearly shows the Deity of the Son of God. In Isaiah 9:6-7, the scriptures speak of His Eternal reign. Even Mary was promised in Luke 1:33, that His throne shall be established forever. Numerous other scriptures state that the Rulership and Throne of The Son of God would be Eternal.

1:9

“You have loved righteousness and hated iniquity.” This is so strong as to be a constant state of one’s nature; meaning ALWAYS loving righteousness, virtue, integrity and uprightness in purpose, thought and action; hating lawlessness, injustice, any type of evil. The Nature of God is always righteous and good; hating all evil. As believers, we are to pray that our very nature and character would love righteousness and hate evil with every part of our being. “Therefore”, (whenever we see this Word, we should pay close attention to the reasons it is given). “God has anointed You with the oil of extreme joy and gladness above and far beyond Your companions.” (Again see Ps. 45: 6,7.) These Messianic quotations reveal that Jesus is indeed God’s Beloved Son. It is interesting that this Psalm also refers to a King’s wedding; a reminder that we are the Bride of Christ.

1:10

You Lord, created the Earth in the beginning, and the Heavens, (meaning the entire Universe), are also the work of Your Hands. This quotation is from Psalm 102. Note that the writer clearly links the Creation of the entire Universe to the God of the Universe; the God-head; Father, Son and Spirit. Those who foolishly believe the lie of evolution, are, in fact, denying the Truth of the Creation of the entire Universe by the Triune God.

1:11-12

The Earth and Heavens will someday perish, yet You, God, will remain steadfast and true forever. The entire Universe will deteriorate and burn up or disintegrate, or wear out; (Isaiah 51:6) just like a garment of clothing becomes worn out and eventually disintegrates. So our current Earth and the Universe will someday completely vanish. We are told that it will “burn up” and be utterly destroyed. Jesus promises that He will create a New Heaven and a New Earth for us. (Rev. 21:1,5) These will again be Perfect, just as they were in the beginning, before sin entered the world. Note, also, that Jesus has promised that all True Believers will be clothed with a new, perfect and beautiful (or handsome) body that will never suffer pain or sorrow and will never wear out or get old! Our current “reality” is caught in a time-space warp. We will be “outside of time” in eternity. This is a difficult concept, yet quantum physicists already know that there is ‘matter’ or ‘substance’ that is beyond our ability to understand. Our very sun is made up of ‘substances’ or ‘random particles’ (these ‘random particles’ are identified as ‘Plasma’) that scientists do not understand! Now many scientists believe that the sun is actually Plasma! We now know that matter exits in at least four forms: Solid, liquid, gas, and plasma. (Curious? Ask to see our DVD!)

1:13

The climatic question the writer asks is: To which angel did God ever say, “Sit at my right hand, until I make Your enemies Your footstool”? Of course, the answer is absolutely none! No angel has ever been given the honor of sitting at God’s right hand, and certainly not been promised that all enemies would be subjected to him! Only God Himself could fulfill that position. Jesus Himself used this same quotation to confound and silence the Pharisees, when He questioned them about the Messiah (Christ), asking them “Whose Son is He?” When they said “David’s”, Jesus questioned them further, by asking them how David, under the influence of the Holy Spirit, called Him (The Messiah) My Lord, saying: ‘My Lord, sit at My right hand until I put Your enemies under Your feet’?! They could not answer! ( see Mt. 22:42-46)

1:14

Then the writer summarizes the purpose and plan God had set in motion for the angels: That they would all be ministering spirits, (servants) sent out into the world in the service of God for the purpose of assisting all those humans who were to inherit Salvation! Think of it, the angels were created by God, to glorify God by serving and assisting those of us who have been chosen, by the Grace of God, to become His beloved children for all eternity! Have you thanked God for the angels He has so graciously sent on your behalf? Have you glorified and praised God for the many time His angels have assisted you? Certainly we do not worship angels, yet we can be thankful for them. Some of us have had our very lives saved by God’s angels!

The Truth is Jesus, (Yeshua in Hebrew) IS the promised Messiah (Christ) and God. He came to save all those who would receive Him; both Jews and Gentiles. Ponder, and pray over these powerful Truths that have been graciously revealed to us. How are you changing your own attitude and thinking? Remember, this ‘SON’ is Yeshua, Jesus!

Overview of Hebrews

Hebrews Introduction

This letter, or Epistle, was written to the Messianic Jews who were referred to as “Hebrews”.

Unlike other Epistles, this one has no introduction to reveal who the author is. However, we have some very clear clues: The language and style are the same as used by the Apostle Paul. The author had three main objectives; to combat possible apostasy, to encourage them to persevere on to spiritual maturity and to comfort them in their persecutions. This letter fits perfectly as the final trilogy of ‘The Just shall Live by Faith’, Habakkuk 2:4: ROMANS which identified the Just; GALATIANS, which tells them how to Live; and HEBREWS which reveals the way to live IS by Faith. Hebrews fits so perfectly with this Truth that most scholars assume the author was Paul. However, the Bible itself gives us a wonderful “clue” in 2 Peter 3:15-16, where Peter is writing to the Messianic Believing Jews and tells them that “…The longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul, also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you;…” So Peter reveals that Paul had written to the Hebrews. Peter calls Paul’s letter “Scripture”; so, this would clearly indicate that this letter to the Hebrews was written by Paul. The only other explanation would be that Paul’s letter was lost, and thus a part of Scripture, which is the Bible; is missing! Even though Paul, for some unknown reason to us, failed to identify himself; yet he secretly gives his trademark closing: “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.” Hebrews 13:25. Note that the word “Grace” in this context, does not even appear in any of the other Epistles, except those written by Paul. The word “Grace” is used by Peter where it is used as an instruction and not as a blessing. Lastly, the Author asks for his readers to “Pray for us”, only Paul makes that statement in his writings.

If we are to gain God’s Truth from this Epistle, we must remember this letter is written, not just for the Messianic Jews, but for all of us throughout the ages; to strengthen our Faith and show us how to truly Live by Faith. We will see that these Believers are true Believers as the author calls them ‘brethren’, (Heb 3:1, 12) and ‘beloved’, (Heb. 6:9) and ‘partakers of the heavenly calling’, (Heb 3:1) and ‘partakers of Christ, the Messiah’. (Heb 3:14) All of these statements identify them as True Believers. Even the warning of “falling away”, can only be done by one who is already a Believer! The chastening of stating that they have been Believers for a long time and should now be teachers of the Word. (Heb 5:11-14) All these statements tell us this letter is only to true Believers. It is important to understand this Truth so that as we are made aware of the warnings and their consequences, we will understand that they cannot lose their Justification in Christ as they have eternal security in Christ; but they can lose their rewards of being a Faithful and True Overcomer. These rewards are revealed at the Judgment Seat of Christ. In our past studies we have learned how important it is to be a Faithful and True follower of Jesus. In these last days we are warned to beware of false prophets and teachers, those who would lead as away from the Truth in apostasy. We must never, never compromise the Truth of God’s Word with anything, or anyone!

Salvation is not just a one time act of the will. Salvation is identified by three aspects: 1. Justification: A gift from God of everlasting life received by faith alone in Jesus Christ alone. 2. Sanctification: A progressive work in us by the Holy Spirit that involves obedience in Faith and results in works that honor and Glorify Jesus. 3. Glorification: The final result of the Justification and Sanctification. All Believers will be glorified and resurrected and given a body like Christ, However some will have far more glory as reward(s) of their obedience in Faithfully following Jesus on earth. Think of it this way: Justification separates us from the PENALTY of sin. Sanctification separates us from the POWER of sin. Glorification separates us from the PRESENCE of sin.

As we study this Epistle, keep in mind that nearly half, 45%, of this letter is prophetic! Thus these Truths are for the future, for us, and for the Millennium.

As with all of God’s Word, we reap what we sow. Thus is a crucial Truth! Why is this important? So that you prayerfully seek the Holy Spirit’s guidance and direction before you begin your reading and studying. Be open to the leading and direction of the Holy Spirit to show you new and exciting applications in your life and journey in Sanctification. May God, our Creator, Lord, and Savior, richly bless you as you seek to know Yeshua, Jesus, and become more like Him. Shalom!

James: Chapter 5

Wise Use of God’s Riches

5:1

James begins this portion of his letter chastising Rich Believers who have not used their wealth for God’s purposes! Immediately, he tells them to weep and howl for the miseries that are coming upon them! Wow, that is a frightening warning to those of us who are ‘rich’. Guess what, we, as Americans, are ALL considered rich according to the world’s standards. We have the most wealth, the most affluence, the most luxurious homes, cars, appliances, all kinds of technologies that make our lives ones of ease and convenience! We wallow in materialism and selfishness, caring little for the sufferings of those less fortunate than ourselves. The love of money is the root of all evil. 1 Timothy 6:10.

5:2-3

Our riches are corrupted, and our garments are moth-eaten? Our Gold and Silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be a witness against us; and destroy us. So, how can we think about this in our age? Perhaps our “God and Silver” represents our ‘Investments’. If those investments are for our ultimate ease and pleasure, with no thought of the needs of others, God cannot be pleased. God sees our attitude about our wealth; He sees our self-indulgent ways and thoughts. Those evil desires and feelings James just admonished us about, seem to be shouting in our ears and minds: We need to change our attitudes and actions from Selfish Boasting and Arrogance to an attitude of seeking God’s Will for the Riches He has given us. How much is too much? Only you, and God, can answer that. Consider asking God what He wants you to do with your ‘excess’. That excess is anything you don’t NEED. If you are like most of us, we say, “BUT WHAT IF….” and then we begin to justify why we ‘need’ all those ‘extra’ whatever it may be. Yet, if we are wise planners, planning according to God’s Will, then we will have sufficient material wealth to meet our needs. Notice we may need to make a decision to use our wealth for the NEEDS of others, and sacrifice some of our WANTS. Is this easy? Of course not! But IF God is directing you to help others in need, and you refuse, you are in disobedience. Notice that James is referring to heaping up wealth in the ‘last days’. Are WE in the ‘last days’? Most serious Bible students believe we are in those ‘last days’. So, it appears that James is speaking directly to us.

5:4

Now James is speaking to those who hire others to work for them. Hopefully, you are paying a fair and honest ‘wage’ to all who do work for you. Hopefully, as the laborer, you are also working hard for the wages that are paid to you. If we have not paid someone a ‘fair wage’ for work done for us, we need to correct that sin. If we are the laborer who has not done the best work possible, we need to correct that sin. You and I are probably on both sides of this equation. Note that these scriptures clearly show that citizens have a right to own real property, yet it is their use of the property that can become sinful. The Truth is that the rights of private property ownership and personal liberty are inseparable. If we cannot own any real property, then we cannot have personal liberties. Our right to worship God in Truth and spirit is then seriously jeopardized.

5:5

Are we living on earth in pleasure and luxury? If so, then we have led lives of luxury and self-indulgence. Our lifestyles here in America certainly seem to fit this description. This means we must do some serious self-assessment. Perhaps it is time to begin seriously sacrificing to assist those who are in serious need. Start with areas God has spoken to your heart about. Perhaps more generously donating to your Food Bank, or Samaritans Purse, or other charitable organizations that seek to alleviate hunger and suffering for poor people in our world. Pray about how you can increase your sacrificial giving to help poor, hungry, suffering people in our country and around the world, all in the name of Jesus.

5:6

How have we ‘condemned’ and ‘murdered’ the just? With our LACK of words and actions, by not assisting and standing up for those who have been condemned unfairly! How about those in other countries who have been murdered, and martyred, and yet we have done nothing to help them? It is now time to begin supporting organizations that strive to bring help to these suffering people and their families. You and I know that in our world today thousands of Christians are being condemned and murdered; being martyred. By not doing something to help them, we are, in effect, contributing to their sufferings. Pray about sacrificially supporting Christian organizations that seek to help Christians around the world who are suffering severe injustices, and often death, just because they believe in Jesus.

5:7-8

THEREFORE, be patient, Believers; this type of Patience, is one of active action, being obedient to do whatever ‘opportunity’ God has given us. Those who are actively patient, are looking for the coming of the Lord, Jesus, with ACTIONS. We know He is coming; will He find us faithfully striving for Eternal Fruit? Are we prayerfully searching for every opportunity to share the GOOD NEWS of Salvation with a lost and dying world? Remember, we must help people with both their Spiritual Needs and their Physical Needs, or they will never believe we truly care about them, nor will they come to know how deeply God loves them!

5:9

True Believers will not spend their time and energy grumbling and complaining about ANYTHING. They will take God-directed ACTION. You see a problem, so what does God want YOU to do about it? How can YOU assist in doing God’s work here on earth in your own sphere of influence? At work? In Church? In our community? Our Nation? Wherever God places us, we must look for opportunities to reach the lost for Jesus. Begin now, to speak the Truth of Jesus, in Love, in every area of your life. Jesus is standing at the door of eternity, judging our thoughts and actions.

5:10

James reminds us to look at the Prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord, as an example to us of suffering and patience. We must persevere in doing whatever we can, wherever we can, to bring forth Eternal Fruit for the Kingdom of God. The time is coming when some of us will be called upon to suffer for Jesus. Are you ready? You should be! Jesus warned us repeatedly that “IF you are truly My followers, you WILL SUFFER for my name’s sake.” God is NOT punishing Believers when He allows suffering to enter our lives, He is BLESSING us by giving us the opportunity of changing our attitude and character to become more like Jesus! Use the sufferings that come upon you, to allow the Holy Spirit to transform you! This is how SANCTIFICATION is performed in our lives. Remember, if we fail to speak out for Jesus, and support those who strive to share the Gospel in good times, we will never have the courage to speak out for Jesus in tough times.

5:11

We often stumble at the thought of enduring through a trial as being ‘blessed’. Why? Because we fail to realize that the ONLY WAY, we can possibly stand strong and endure whatever trial we are facing, is because of the Mercy and Grace of the Holy Spirit within us. God alone provides the strength and fortitude to endure and persevere! Never think, falsely, that you somehow mustered the courage to persevere. Perseverance is always the result of our obedience to the Power of the Holy Spirit within our souls and spirits.

5:12

This reference to ‘swearing’ means our speaking. Words are powerful, and our words will bring goodness or evil depending on what, and how we speak. We must guard our speech; seeking to speak only the Truth of God’s Word into our lives and the lives of others. ‘Yes, or No’, means that we are Truthful and loving in our speech. We must NOT compromise the Truth to accommodate anyone, or in any situation. If we use our speech to judge ANYONE, we are acting out of arrogance. Only God is to judge. Certainly, we must speak out against any evil, and act in faithfulness, but God will judge all those who commit evil. Our faithfulness means we will take action against the evil being committed. How? Personally, in our own lives and our sphere of influence, as well as support those who seek to expose evil and provide God’s goodness.

5:13

SUFFERING. Not our favorite topic, is it? Yet, we all experience it in some way, to different degrees. If you are not suffering in some way right now, be thankful, and seek ways to help others who are suffering. If you ARE suffering, notice that the first thing the Holy Spirit tells us to do is PRAY! This is exactly what we should ALREADY be doing every moment of our lives. What? Pray ALL the time? Yes! Remember, 1 Thessalonians 5:16-19: “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing. In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit!” Memorizing, and praying this Scripture into your life, will change you forever! If we pray without ceasing, we will not fret and worry, because we are seeking God’s mercy and grace; and receiving it as we pray! Suffering? Then we pray, asking for God’s strength and power to endure the suffering; seeking to learn the ‘lessons’ He is trying to teach us. Perhaps it is just learning to persevere in the face of adversity. That is exactly what Jesus did His entire life! You want to be more like Jesus? Then prepare for suffering and learning to persevere and endure whatever God allows in your life. Avoid the pity party! That is not persevering. Be joyful, thankful, appreciative of the blessings you DO have. Thank God for allowing you the privilege of suffering for His sake. Rejoice Always, Pray without stopping, Give Thanks in EVERY SITUATION! This is how a mature Believer will live and act, no matter what suffering enters their life. Are you prepared? Are you seeking God’s Will? REALLY? Take a good, honest look at how you respond to any type or kind of suffering! As you pray God’s Word into your life, don’t rush, take time to experience His Word, let it sink deep into your mind and soul, and absorb His Word into your very being.

5:14

SICKNESS. Another area all of us suffer with to some degree. Again, our first response is PRAYER. We admit we need prayer from others, by humbly asking and seeking prayers from others. Serious illnesses should cause us to humble ourselves and ask Believers to pray over us. ‘Elders’ could refer to any mature Believer. Even being anointed with oil, in the name of the Lord, shows our Trust in God’s Word. All these actions show our Trust in Jesus, His Word, and our belief in prayer. We say we want to be like Jesus; then this is the ultimate test in our life, the sufferings, trials, tribulations; whatever the situation may be, we must respond first with prayer, thankfulness, rejoicing, and perseverance, always seeking God’s perfect will for our lives. God will BLESS you as you Pray. God ALWAYS gives us His Best, as we obey Him.

5:15

Be careful to understand that the prayer of faith will save the sick, not necessarily be a guarantee of complete physical healing. As the Lord ‘raises him up’, this could mean complete physical healing; yet immediately notice that the emphasis is on forgiveness of sins.

5:16

Confession. Our admission of our sins must first be to ourselves and God. God clearly tells us that we must confess and repent. Just admitting the sin is not true confession, we must repent, that is, turn away from, evil actions and thoughts. If we have harmed another, then we must FIRST admit our wrong and seek God’s direction regarding how we should confess to that person. Then our confession of our sin should be to the person we have harmed. We admit we committed a wrongdoing, and ask for forgiveness, being mindful that we must be prepared to make amends for the harm we have caused. This can be difficult, and sometimes we cannot ‘undo’ the damage we have caused. Praying for one another for healing may be for spiritual healing, or physical healing, or for both. The ultimate ‘healing’ is for our souls and spirits. We NEED forgiveness and healing. Ultimately all forgiveness and healing, both spiritual and physical, comes from God.

The effective fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.

5:17

Understanding that the previous sentence refers to this verse, helps clarify the reference to Elijah. We are told that Elijah had a human nature just like us, that is, he was sinful. Yet he prayed earnestly… See 1 Kings 17 and 18. Elijah stated that there would be no rain for three- and one-half years. Yet the Jewish Talmud states that Elijah prayed for rain to be withheld from the land for three- and one-half years. God is the one who withheld rain from the land for that entire time. This was a judgement on the disobedient King Ahab and the Jewish people, who were sacrificing their children to false gods. Then after the predicted 3 ½ years of no rain, then Elijah was told to pray for the rain to come, and it came, allowing the earth to once again produce crops to feed the people and animals. When we read the entire verses from 1 Kings, referred to in these verses; we understand that Elijah was praying in OBEDIENCE to God’s direction, despite the severe sufferings he also had to endure for three- and one-half years. Think you are suffering for a long time … how about how severe the sufferings were for Elijah, even WHEN he was obedient to God’s commands? Remember, it’s NOT about us, it’s about God’s Eternal Plans!

5:19-20

James last plea to us, as Believers, is that if anyone wanders away from the Truth of God’s Word, that we would share the True Truth with them, and bring them back into God’s Word. In the current world of lies and half-truths (really lies in disguise) and all sorts of false teachings, even in our churches, we MUST be diligent in correctly understanding God’s Word. Turning a sinner from the error of his ways, clearly is a reference to teaching the truth of God’s Word to unbelievers, and to Christians, who are believing false teachings. The unbeliever, who becomes a Believer, will be saved from hell. The Christian, who is given the Truth, will be covered from a multitude of sins. Many people, who are Christians, have been deceived into promoting, or participating, in things that are not of God; thus, they are evil. So, helping Believers correctly understand God’s Word is crucial in these last days. Praying the Truth of God’s Word, on a daily basis, is crucial to being effective in this spiritual battle we are in, in these, the last days before the return of Jesus as Lord, God, and Ruler of Heaven and earth.

What a powerful, and challenging, book the Holy Spirit has given us to study and apply to our lives. There are no short cuts, or quick methods, to learning and applying God’s Eternal Word to our lives. It is a day by day, moment by moment consistent struggle to be obedient to the Holy Spirit within us. May each of us humble ourselves, seeking to understand and obey the will of God as the Holy Spirit reveals His Truth to us. The powerful and emotional language James uses in this book should jolt us into prayerful action on a daily basis. Our lives, the lives of our family and friends, even our world, are all at stake for all eternity. Nothing is more serious than this fierce spiritual battle you and I are involved in. We dare not ignore the importance of praying, studying and obeying God’s Word.

Jesus told us: “Heaven and Earth shall pass away, but My Word will endure for all Eternity.”
Shalom

James: Chapter 4

Desires of Our Heart

4:1

Wrong and evil desires! We are immediately told that the desires, or motives, of our hearts and minds influence both our feelings and actions. None of us like to admit that we have wrong, or even evil desires; yet we do! So, these fleshly desires cause us to act in ungodly ways that bring about arguments and fights. Ever insist that you want things YOUR way? Sure, we’ve all done that. And what is the result? Others are unhappy with our selfish, dictatorial, demands and actions. So, the end result is quarrels and fights; none of us like to be used and abused by others, and that is exactly what is being done to us when others act from wrong desires. Just because we FEEL like doing something, doesn’t mean it is right, or good. Remember, those ‘feelings’ come from those evil desires! These selfish, evil desires are in ALL of us! However, that doesn’t excuse us; we are to use our God given abilities to control those selfish desires; and develop character traits that reflect Jesus’ character. We must seek Wisdom from the Holy Spirit to know how to subdue those evil desires and replace them with desires that will be pleasing and honoring to God.

4:2-3

James goes on to tell us that we are jealous; coveting what others have. Thinking that somehow, we want, or must have, something that others have. Money, Home, Vehicle, Vacations, Clothes; and an endless list of Worldly possessions! You can fill in the blanks with THINGS that you WANT! How many of us foolishly think that “If only I had _____, I would be happy, or satisfied.”? We are delusional, lying to ourselves as nothing will truly satisfy us except being in the Will of God! So, those who desire what others have, often try to get them by some evil manner. Even resorting to murder, to obtain another person’s possessions. Well, you think, I would NEVER murder someone for anything!! So, James immediately reminds us that to be envious, angry, and hateful is the same as murder. Oh, oh, we are all in trouble! Then suddenly James tells us that we don’t have something because we have not asked for it. 3. OR, now James gets to our selfish, evil desires; we ask God for things with a wrong purpose, or motive. That would be a selfish, evil motive. We want something to simply satisfy our worldly sensual pleasures. Jesus clearly tells us what we should be concerned about and pray for. See Matthew 6:19-34. So, what are you seeking?

4:4

Adulterers and Adulteresses! Wow, James identifies these desires as not just UNFAITHFULNESS, but calls such desires ADULTERY! that seems a bit harsh and extreme to us; yet let’s think it over carefully. Moral unfaithfulness comes when a person is not satisfied, or content, with the husband or wife that they have. They may not even be conscious of the fact that they are eyeing other men or women with wrong desires. Yet, God warns us that we must GUARD our hearts, to be Pure and Holy, seeking what is good and honorable. We must cultivate an attitude of thankfulness and gratitude for our spouse; remembering that they are a gift from God. Are we the loving, kind, thoughtful, considerate, hardworking, and loving spouse that we should be? If not, then the problem may be us, not them. Or perhaps we have both failed and need to seek Jesus as the center of our lives. But notice that this goes beyond marital infidelity, to being morally unfaithful in our desires for worldly pleasures! Our attitude of being discontent with whatever we have, or the situation we are in, to the point to desiring worldly comfort ABOVE our desire for a holy and pure heart, is sin. So, James tells us that loving the world is HATING God! Remember, even Jesus called his generation a wicked and adulterous generation. Our current generation is even worse! See Matthew 12:39, and 16:4 We actually become God’s enemy! Since we really do not want to be God’s ENEMY, then we must rethink our priorities, our values, and the desires of our hearts.

4:5

James again reminds us that the scriptures warn us of our selfish fleshly envy. God has clearly told us that we should be desiring that which is good, honorable, kind, generous, loving… essentially seeking all the fruits of the spirit. If we seek those attributes, and character traits, in our lives, then the THINGS will lose their evil appeal to us. Even desiring another person, when you know it is immoral, is idolatry! Why? Because you put that person, or thing, before your love for God. Proverbs 21:10a The soul of the wicked desires evil. Our desires reveal the true nature of our very souls, our IDENTITY. This is a crucial point to understand, as our identity as a person, is our soul. So those who have a wicked soul have a wicked identity and are wicked persons; unable to EVER have a personal relationship with God; THEREFORE, they exclude themselves from all love, joy, glory, peace, happiness, honor, goodness, satisfaction, personal relationships; and all the other wonderful promises of God. Instead, they destroy their own soul, and at death, becoming evil forever; and will have the same end result as demons; HELL, and the LAKE OF FIRE; just as the demons are forever doomed to eternal agony and suffering, so will the wicked condemn themselves to eternal agony and suffering.

4:6

BUT HE GIVES GRACE! That is the gift of God that we ALL so desperately need. None of us want to condemn ourselves to eternal suffering, so we must humble ourselves and accept God’s gracious gifts of Mercy and Grace. He provides His Mercy and Grace to enable us to overcome those evil, selfish desires. We absolutely must humble ourselves to obtain His Grace; there is NO OTHER WAY! That is why James quotes from Proverbs 3:34, reminding us that God opposes the arrogant, but gives grace to those who are humble. To continue to seek our own selfish desires is ARROGANCE! Then when we bring disaster upon ourselves, we cry out for God’s mercy and grace! Are we seeing ourselves as Hypocrites and LIARS? We should because that is exactly what we are.

4:7

THEREFORE, as always, whenever we see this word, we should pay special attention as there is something very important the Holy Spirit is revealing to us. Submit and humble ourselves, our minds, and hearts to God through prayer. Seek the Holy Spirit’s Wisdom in dealing with our selfish desires. As we chose to obey the Will of God, we are taking a strong stand against our adversary, the devil. Will he flee immediately? Usually not, but as we continue to pray for power and strength from the Holy Spirit, and remove whatever is feeding our selfish desires, we will be given the strength to resist evil. Ask God to give you a godly desire, something that will bring Him honor and glory, and at the same time bring you peace and joy. Pray for others, seek to do good for someone else. As you direct your focus away from the selfish desires, they will diminish and be replaced with a new desire, in God’s Will, that will be far more satisfying, and truly bring glory and joy to God.

4:8

How do we come close to God? Draw near, that means we need to make an effort! Pray, read, study and apply His Word to our lives, just as you are doing right now! Then Pray again! We want to be close to Jesus; so we must confess our sinfulness, seeking God’s forgiveness as we repent of our evil desires. James tells us to clean our hands and purify our hearts. This means we are to stop doing evil things and seek God’s Will for our lives. This change in attitude will bring new and godly desires into our hearts and minds. None of us become godly overnight; it is a process called Sanctification. We know that it takes a lifetime. Yet, the more we seek God’s Will, the easier it becomes to avoid evil desires and thoughts. Fill your heart and mind with His Word. Memorize scriptures and they will become the desires of your heart. The Holy Spirit wants the VERY BEST for you ALL the time. So, seek God’s Will and you will receive His VERY BEST!

4:9-10

If you are struggling with true and honest repentance, James clearly tells you that you must grieve and be sorrowful over your evil desires. You must honestly and sincerely seek to rid your heart, mind and soul of those worldly sinful desires that bring nothing but grief, destruction and evil to yourself and others. 10. As we humble ourselves before our God, seeking His forgiveness, healing and restoration, He will give it to us. Will it happen instantly? Usually not, we need to continually seek to turn away from those evil desires and feelings. Yet continue to trust God, He loves you with an Eternal Love, and will give you the strength to overcome those evil desires and feelings. We must persevere!

4:11-12

‘Brothers’, James is obviously speaking to fellow Believers; clearly telling us we are not to speak any evil words, even if it’s True, about another person. Why? Because as we speak evil of a fellow Believer, we are, in effect, judging that person. We are NOT the Judge and Jury of anyone! We do not know ALL the circumstances, nor do we know the intent of another person’s heart. 12. James reminds us that there is only One Lawgiver ~ God! And there is only One who is both able to save and to destroy! You and I know that God Almighty is the ultimate Lawgiver and Judge of ALL men. So, in effect we try to usurp God’s authority when we arrogantly judge others. Gossip, slander, repeating evil words, all these evil words from our mouths, fall into this category. Our tongues, once again, get us into trouble and sin, and bring suffering to others!

4:13-14

This ‘come now’ is more like “Pay careful attention!” You people who say we will do this, or that, go here or there, all to make a profit. Clearly, we are instructed to plan for the future, but to seek God’s wisdom and guidance, in all we do, so that whatever ‘we plan’ is really God’s Will and Plan for our lives. 14. Why should we seek God’s Will? Simple, we don’t know the future. An unforeseen catastrophe could occur at any time, changing our situation so drastically, that even carefully laid plans and investments, can become disastrous. Accidents, illness, disastrous weather, war, pandemics, or even the mere possibility of war and widespread pandemics, can trigger Stock market crashes, loss of jobs, loss of basic necessities of life, utilities, water, electricity, medical provisions, communication disasters, the list goes on and on. Some of us have even recently experienced these! James reminds us that our very lives could end in a moment; we are like a vapor, that may appear for just a very short time, and then just disappear.

4:15-16

So, in effect, this is such an important FACT of life, that we should carefully consider that ‘our’ plans should really only be God’s Plans. James carefully warns, and tells us, that we are to rely on, and Trust God for EVERYTHING, EVERY SINGLE DAY! We should pray first, then plan, with spiritual wisdom and insight, about whatever it is we are doing in life. Does this mean we need to consult God about what to wear, eat, say, etc.? Well, in effect, YES! We need to be tuned in to God’s Word and perspective, that whatever, we DO, SAY, or even THINK, would bring Him Glory, Honor and Praise. Only then, can we know that we are in His Will. 16. Yet, most of us conduct our lives, under the foolish delusion that we are in control! Nothing could be further from the Truth! God is in control, has always been in control, and thankfully, will always be in control. He allows us to operate and function as human beings, with the ability to think and make decisions and choices; clearly showing us that the BEST choices, will only be those that are IN HIS WILL! So, what do we do? Most of us flounder through life, trying to make life choices on our own, rather than seeking God’s Will for the BEST choices. Remember, for 100% of the choices you make, you are the one who made the choice! So those ‘poor life choices’ that brought you pain, suffering and hardship, were probably choices you made without God. Making life decisions our way, rather than consulting God, is called BOASTING. This Boasting is always evil. Proverbs 27:1-2.

4:17

The quick summary is simple: Now that you know what to do to do good, and yet, you do not do it, then that is SIN. So, is it a sin, not to consult God for your life decisions? James says it is. Think about it, why in the world would we go on making life decisions without consulting God and His Word in prayer? Because we cling to Arrogance and Boasting, both of which are evil attitude decisions! A decision to continue in this manner will continue to bring you ultimate failures in life, pain, and suffering. So, make a firm commitment, RIGHT NOW, to consult God, and His Word, through prayer, for ALL your life decisions. That is the wisest choice you can make to receive God’s very Best for you. After all, God knows what the BEST for you is, and He can guide you into making wise, godly decisions.

Our Life Choices determine the direction and quality of our lives. Each day brings us new opportunities to make godly Life Choices. Only a fool would continue to make choices that bring them sorrow, suffering and pain. So, be wise, Pray, consult God’s Word, seek His Will for your life, and make God-guided Life Choices that will bring you the VERY BEST God has for you! Not sure how to follow God? Then take the time to study these chapters again, looking up each scripture, and praying God’s very Word into your life. God will give you the Wisdom you need, as you obey Him.

James: Chapter 3

Controlling Our Tongue

3:1

Not many, meaning only a very few, should even attempt to become teachers. James is speaking about Teachers of God’s Word. Why Not? Because those people are able to discern the true meaning and understanding of God’s Word in application to our lives. This is a serious responsibility, requiring power from the Holy Spirit. Without God’s special power, direction, guidance, insight and wisdom, teachers can make grave and serious errors, thereby leading Believers astray! Teachers will be judged by a much higher standard, and with greater severity, than other Believers. This Truth is overwhelming and should be very carefully considered before anyone attempts to teach others. Not only do teachers have much greater accountability but will receive greater condemnation! Notice that this infers that teachers willingly assume and accept a greater accountability, responsibility and condemnation! Please, please pray for all those who act in the capacity of teachers, (or daring to write commentary on God’s Word). They need your fervent prayers, and God’s constant and continual admonition, to speak and share only His absolute Truth.

3:2

Our sins and errors offend and harm others. Often, we offend, or harm, someone without even realizing it. A person who NEVER offends anyone with their speech, would be a perfect man; one who controls his entire body, including his tongue, ALWAYS! Have any of you every met someone like that? We should not think this is some mandate to not confront evil, or try to rectify wrongs, for fear of “offending” someone. Otherwise, we could never mention God or Jesus because someone would claim we had “offended” him. The type of “offense” that James is speaking of, was something done or said, that actually harmed someone in some way, not just ‘hurt their feelings’, because we pointed out a wrongdoing, or evil. Speaking the Truth about spiritual matters is something we are commanded to do. However, remember, we are to speak the Truth in Love. Think about Jesus, He spoke lovingly, patiently and clearly, speaking the Truth of Himself and God, and yet He was attacked on a regular basis by the Pharisees and Sadducees. Why? Because they refused to recognize, or admit, the Truth about themselves, and their own hypocrisy. Finally, after they accused Him of being possessed by a demon and of doing miracles by the power of Satan, He then called them a brood of vipers, hypocrites, and accurately told them they were going to Hell! Jesus clearly “offended” the Pharisees and Sadducees on a fairly regular basis, after various incidents in all four gospels. So, remember, that our current worldly definition of “offense” is clearly not the same meaning, or connotation, that James is speaking of. James wants us to realize that we must not say anything that would bring harm to others, even if it is true! If there is something that needs to be addressed, then do it tactfully, privately, and lovingly.

3:3-4

So, now James gives us a few simple analogies. Both animals and vehicles are easily controlled by a small apparatus. Bits in the horse’s mouths, and rudders, or steering mechanisms of some sort for all our various types of vehicles. We now even control all kinds and types of things with our electronic gadgets.

3:5

Yet, we seem unable to control our little tongues; meaning our speech. Good, and wise speech, can, and does, lead to great things. “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks” Matthew 12:34. Psalm 141:3-4: “Set a watch, O Lord, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips. Incline not my heart to any evil thing.” We are inspired by a passionate plea for something that would bring about great good for others. Godly Pastors can, and do, encourage, and inspire us to rethink our foolish sinful ways, and repent, and chose to follow godly inspiration. A passionate plea to help the poor and needy can encourage us to reach out generously to a lost and dying world. A fire can be good, if is used to cook a meal, heat a home, or operate a furnace, boiler, or some type of machinery. However, that same spark that lit the stove, can also ignite an out-of-control fire; destroying homes, buildings, forests, and do millions of dollars of damage, even killing people and animals.

3:6

So, when we say something we know is wrong, foolish, or harmful, we nearly always say, or think, “me, and my big mouth!” We wish we could ‘take back’ that foolish and hurtful comment. Yet, once the words are spoken, the damage begins, causing untold damage and disasters, to others, and often ourselves. James calls that uncontrolled tongue, a FIRE, indicating the source of the evil that is caused is from Hell itself. That uncontrolled tongue is called ‘wickedness, evil, depraved’. The wrong words, and speech, have caused untold damage to children; teens, adults, and even caused wars! Remember, in chapter one, James admonished us to be ‘slow to speak’, now we are beginning to better understand why; to avoid allowing evil to come forth from us, hurting others! It is interesting that James says that the source of this evil is from Gehenna, or Hell. This would seem to indicate that we may be influenced by demons, lurking around us, looking for an opportunity to use us, and our tongue, for evil. As we study God’s Word, we are reminded how often words were used to attack Jesus. Evil tongues, that is words, were used to plot His suffering and death. So, James’s advice to be ‘slow to speak’ would mean ‘think, and pray, BEFORE you speak.’ Anyone you know that needs that advice? Maybe you?

3:7-8

James again gives us the examples of animals, birds, and sea life all being able to be ‘tamed’ or controlled. 8. Yet, our tongue cannot be ‘tamed’, or controlled, by any man. James tells us our tongue is unruly, evil, and full of deadly poison! Keep in mind that the deadliest poison is one that is tasteless and odorless! We don’t realize we are being poisoned until it is too late! So also, is the deadly poison of gossip, criticism, lies and slander; it destroys people, families, churches, businesses, and nations! Churches are especially vulnerable to this type of verbal venom. This is one area of our life we all need to do some serious soul-searching! According to Jewish teachings, the sin of ‘lashon hara’, meant the ‘tongue of the evil’. See Proverbs 12:22. To speak evil this way was considered to be the same as denying God; and was treated as though the person had committed idolatry, sexual immorality or murder! Remember, only God, through the Holy Spirit, can tame your tongue! Let’s all pray for God’s ‘taming of our tongues’.

3:9-10

Now James tells us clearly what we are doing. With our tongue, that is our words, we bless and praise our God. Yet, even in the same day, we curse, or speak evil of people who were created in the image and likeness of God. So, in effect, we are lying to ourselves, claiming we are praising and worshiping God; and then we speak evil of God’s creation, by cursing them! 10. James pleads with us, saying that as Christian brothers and sisters, out of our mouths come both blessings and evil! James tells us we should not be doing these things and speaking these evils! So what does this tell us is REALLY in our hearts? We should be praying for the Holy Spirit to thoroughly cleanse our hearts and minds.

3:11

James asks us IF a spring, or fountain, can bring forth both good, fresh water, and bitter, or contaminated water? We know the answer: It can’t. Clean, pure water is crucial for our survival. So is a clean, pure heart. Are we contaminating ourselves and others with our polluted words? Proverbs 12:18: “There are those who speak rashly, like the piercing of a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.” Proverbs 18:4: “The words of a man’s mouth are as deep waters, and the wellspring of wisdom are as a flowing brook.” Proverbs 18:21: “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” Proverbs 10:11: “The mouth of a righteous man is a well of life”. Is the Holy Spirit telling us we need to memorize some of these scriptures for our lives and make them a part of our very soul and spirit?

3:12

Just in case we foolishly ignored, or missed, all the analogies James has given us; he asks if a fig tree can bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs. Again, we know the answer. Absolutely not. So, also a brackish spring can never give us pure drinking water. Controlling our speech and our words is crucial to our spiritual walk. We deceive ourselves if we continue to use evil words, speak evil of others, complain, and especially engage in gossip. The list goes on beyond these: ANY WORDS that do not honor and edify God are EVIL. Repeating criticisms and complaints is NOT uplifting and encouraging. Think before we speak. PRAY before we speak. Think over this past week, did you say ANYTHING that was not honoring to God? Do we realize that we bring evil into our own lives by our own words? Is life difficult and full of problems? How is your speech? Matthew 15:18 Jesus says: “But whatever comes out of the mouth comes from the heart, and this is what makes a man unclean and defiles him.” Repentance is available and necessary. Begin by giving God BOTH your Heart and your Tongue. Then select scriptures to memorize, to encourage yourself to begin now to control your tongue. Proverbs 4:23: “Guard your heart with all diligence, for out of it flows the springs of life.” Proverbs 10:21 “The lips of the righteous feed many”. Remember what Jesus told us in John 6:63: “These words that I speak unto you, they are spirit and they are life.” Isaiah 50:4: “The Lord God has given me the tongue of a disciple and of one who is taught, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him who is weary. He wakens me morning by morning; He wakens my ear to hear as a disciple.” Jesus did this: Mark 1:35: “And in the morning, long before daylight, He got up and went out to a deserted place, and there He prayed.” Do you PRAY each morning, before starting your day? Jesus always did.

3:13

WISDOM. So, we think we are pretty smart, wise, and oh, so intelligent, knowing this or that. Most of us have a higher opinion of ourselves then we should, a much higher opinion than reality! We think, oh, I’m pretty good; or I’m better than so and so. You get the idea. So, James asks us ‘Who is there among you who is Wise and Intelligent?’ Then let that person show how “wise and intelligent” he is by his noble living, good works, and humility of true wisdom. Proverbs 4:7, tells us: “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore, get wisdom: and with all your wisdom get understanding.” This is godly wisdom, not earthly wisdom! Knowledge and Wisdom are two different things: Knowledge is changeable, Wisdom is Eternal; confusing the two is deadly; and leads to disaster and death. Proverbs 9:10: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.” So where do we get this wonderful spiritual Wisdom? From Jesus: Our wisdom is of Christ ~ 1 Corth. 1:24, 30; Col. 2:3. Our sure Wisdom is found in the Word of God: Deut. 6:4, 5-6, 2 Tim. 3:15; Psalms 119:97-100. Wisdom also comes from believing prayer; James 1:5. Remember, as you ask God for Wisdom, be prepared to OBEY HIM. God will NOT give you Wisdom if you have no intention of obeying His Word.

3:14-15

BUT here it is, the word we need to pay attention to. Whenever we have these attitudes of jealousy, envy, rivalry, selfishness, and bitterness in our hearts; we should never focus on these ungodly attitudes and ideas. If we continue with any of these attitudes, or feelings, then we are wallowing in our own self-pride! We deny the Truth of God’s Word, by following ‘worldly wisdom’ which is demonic! 15. How do we know that, because James clearly tells us this superficial, earthly, unspiritual ‘wisdom’ comes from devilish and demoniacal sources. A strong warning to all of us!

3:16

Now James tells us how we can easily spot this type of evil: Wherever there is any kind or type of jealousy, envy, rivalry and selfish ambition, contentions and the like; they will bring disharmony, unrest, confusion, rebellion and all sorts of evil and vile and foul practices. Ever see, or experience, evil words that cause the entire situation to explode into name calling, anger, hate, and viciousness? We must make wise decisions to avoid participating in any of these practices. Remember, wrong thinking produces wrong living. If anyone tries to involve you in any type of verbal language that you know is not honoring to God; then remove yourself from the situation; do whatever it takes. You may need to interrupt someone who is venting evil words, and simply state: This type of conversation is upsetting to me, and I believe God is not honored by these words and conversation. ‘Please change the subject, or I must excuse myself’; or say, ‘this conversation has ended’ and hang up the phone. Do whatever is necessary to remove yourself from any ‘evil words’.

3:17-18

BUT now comes the contrast between good and evil. Wisdom from above, is clearly spiritual wisdom from God; the kind we all want in our lives. This type of Wisdom is first of all pure; notice that PURE is first! What a contrast to impure words, ideas, thoughts, and actions. No wonder the Holy Spirit wants us to seek a Pure Heart! Now this spiritual Wisdom is peaceful, kind, gentle, courteous, considerate, reasonable, full of compassion, mercy, and good fruits, wholehearted and Truthful, impartial, and unfeigned. 18. Peacemakers who speak in such a way, will influence others to speak and act in similar wise ways, bringing forth righteousness that honors and glorifies God! Believers who obey God’s Will in their speech will bring forth good fruit of harmony, peacefulness, agreement, and a sense of unity togetherness and love in their relationships. Isn’t that the kind of relationships we want in all areas of our lives? Words spoken wisely, will bring forth Truth and Righteousness; causing all to honor and glorify God. We should all pray to become that kind of obedient, wise person, speaking words of Wisdom!

James: Chapter 2

Practical Biblical Advice for Believers

2:1-3

Again, James uses the full title of who Jesus is Lord Jesus Christ; Adonai Yeshua Messiah. This Chapter is a continuation of Chapter One, verse 27, immediately following the admonition to keep oneself morally uncontaminated from the world. So, in addition, James is telling us we are to emulate our Messiah by not showing any favoritism to any person. Our tendency to judge or evaluate a person’s worth, or identity, is nearly always according to the values of the world, not the value Jesus places on a person. 2. – 3. Therefore, we are to treat the rich, beautiful, handsome, richly adorned, refined people the same as the poor, uneducated, ignorant, shabbily dressed people. Our true heart condition is revealed by the way we perceive and treat ‘the least of men’. The value of a person is NOT measured by their looks, wealth, position, or education; rather, it is their value as a child of the Living God, Creator of the Universe. Peter learned this lesson and revealed this truth in Acts 10:38, 42-45. We are also to treat unbelievers with patient, loving truth; realizing that they are being held captive by an evil force ~ SIN! If they are not ‘born again from above’ then they really don’t know who God is; nor do they really understand who Jesus is! They are influenced by the world, the flesh and the Devil. You and I are PRIVILEGED to be influenced by the Holy Spirit, the Word of God, and Jesus. Can you see the difference? We have all the advantages of being able to see and understand the truth of God’s Word; clearly being shown what is righteous and holy; they can’t understand true righteousness, nor recognize what is evil, and are without hope! See 1 Corinth. 1:26-29. Our only hope, and theirs, always lies with Jesus.

2:4-5

Now, once a person becomes a Believer, accepting Jesus as their Lord, God and Savior; they are just as valuable as you, or the wealthiest or poorest person in your community of Believers. 5. We tend to think persons like Billy Graham have more value to God then we do, or the person who seems less ‘spiritual’, less value. We are all guilty of judging others. ‘Well, they don’t attend Church every Sunday, and they do such and such, so they’re not such good Christians.’ Sound familiar? We are just as guilty when we judge people to be less valuable, because they are only ‘pew warmers’, or some other label we attach to others who may appear to do less than we do. We tend to ‘judge’ others based on our ‘self-perception’! Who do we think we are! Would Jesus approve such spiritual snobbery? Hardly! See Ephesians 2:11-22. We should be thankful that we are able to serve our Christian Community in some manner, not somehow think, foolishly, that we are ‘better’ than some other Believer! Shame, shame, on us. Remember, in James’s day and age, the Jews never even associated with the ‘lowly’, often hated, Gentiles! Yet here they were, gladly, and lovingly, welcoming those ‘lowlifes’ into their spiritual community of Believers! See 1 John 4:20. What a lesson for us, the 21st century spiritual snobs! Think of Jesus, as a human being, He was so poor, that He was born in a borrowed stable. He had to borrow loaves and fishes from a little boy to feed the crowd. In Matt. 8:20 he stated that He had nowhere to lay his head, meaning He was homeless! He even borrowed a donkey to present Himself to Jerusalem. He borrowed a room to celebrate Passover. He even died on a ‘borrowed’ cross, remember, it was really meant for Barabbas, not Jesus! Again, we should hang our heads in shame, and repent of such an unspiritual and unscriptural attitude.

2:6-7

Now James really lays it on by pointing out that we insult and humiliate the poor by our treatment of them. Then he correctly points out the truth that it’s the rich men (who were the most powerful in their day) who take advantage of the people in the legal arena. In our day, the corrupt politicians continually take advantage of the average person, for their own gain. We need to continually pray for those who are in leadership, that they would do what is right and just, according to biblical values, not for their own agenda. 7. It is not only our politicians, but those who are wealthy who promote evil. Billionaires, like George Sorros, and others, promote immorality, murder, and plunder of the poor under twisted terminology, to confuse the average person. The rich people in the entertainment industry, blaspheme our Lord and Savior and dishonor our Country and those who promote Biblical values. Our beloved Country was founded on Biblical values, yet they have been stripped away, twisted, and distorted to allow evil men to rule us in a way that God never intended. Our Country was founded on Biblical principles, with the miraculous help of God; with the intent that we, as Believers, would bring the good news of Jesus, as Lord, God and Savior, to a lost and dying world. We must commit ourselves to continue to pray for that goal, and to do everything within our means to share Jesus with the spiritually lost. Anyone who wishes, may use our Live Forever flyer and Thank You note to reach out to those who are poor and needy. You are strongly encouraged to support a godly group, or organization, that seeks to help the poor and share the Truth of Jesus.

2:8

James now comes to the ‘bottom line’; the ‘royal law’: Loving your neighbor, as you love yourself. See Leviticus 19:18. Who is this neighbor? See Luke 10:25-37. Keep in mind that obeying this command, given by Jesus, makes you royalty, along with your King Jesus. Disobeying it makes you a slave. It’s your choice, remain a slave, or chose to become Royalty. Keep in mind that true LOVE which refers to AGAPE, is a choice, not an emotion. This kind of true LOVE is UNCONDITIONAL. We make a deliberate choice to love the poor and needy by donating to the Food Bank, Samaritan’s Purse, using the Thank You card, etc., all to reach the poor for Jesus. Remember, if we do NOTHING to help a person with their physical needs, they will never believe we care about their spiritual needs. Jesus fed the poor, after telling them about the Kingdom of God. He preached truth and salvation and healed the sick and dying. He shared the truth of Eternal Life with His Father in Heaven and cast out demons. Wherever Jesus went, He did good for people; both physically and spiritually. Does this tell us how He wants us to reach the poor? I think it paints a very clear picture and guideline of how we are to be following Jesus, doing just as He did.

2:9-11

BUT here it is again, so pay attention: IF you favor the rich, good looking, influential, powerful people, over the poor and lowly, you are committing sin. Oh, Oh! 10. James reminds us that if we just sin in only one area, we are guilty of all areas. We are guilty before God, and absolutely MUST commit our lives to Jesus for salvation. 11. Now James names just two of the ten commandments, Murder and Adultery; reminding us that we are guilty as lawbreakers, even if we only break one commandment. Keep in mind what Jesus taught about these same two commandments: IF you even think an immoral thought; then you have committed adultery. IF you hate, or are even angry, with someone, even just in your mind; then you have committed murder. Stop and read Matt. 5: 21-22, 27-28. So, how are we all doing? Guilty, or innocent, on both commandments? Now, we see and understand why we so desperately need Salvation through Jesus. There is no possible way we can be justified before our Perfect, Holy, Pure, Sinless, Creator, God and Lord; without the redemption given by Yeshua on the cross.

2:12

James tells us that we must speak and act as people who are judged under the law of Liberty. This Law of Liberty refers to the commandments given by Jesus, to us, as Believers, especially regarding Love. Judged? Since you and I know that Jesus will not judge us for our confessed sins, yet we also know our ‘works’ will be judged and rewarded. See 2 Corinth. 5:9-10, Col. 3:22-25. Yet, we must remember that our WORDS will also be judged. See Rom. 14:10-13. Jesus warned us for every ‘idle word’ we speak, we must give an account of on the day of judgment. See Matt. 12:36. So both our works and words will be judged. God will remember our sins no more, See Heb. 10:17; but those sins, both words and actions, affect both our character and our works. We say we want to develop godly character traits; yet our words and actions affect this aspect of who we are, our very souls. We want to follow Jesus and have fruitful works that count for all eternity. Yet, our words and actions affect and determine our relationship with Jesus, and the works we perform.

2:13

Judgment and Mercy. This is James Key Point, so don’t miss it! We often forget that God grants us Mercy by not Judging us for our sins; we deserve to be judged GUILTY, GUILTY! Yet, Jesus’ death on the cross PAID for our Death sentence, which we rightly deserved. Yet God also gives us Grace, which is what we do not deserve, giving us Freedom from the Power of Sin, and Eternal Life with Him. That undeserved Grace should jolt us to realize how much Mercy and Grace we should bestow on others. Even though someone ‘deserves’ judgment, we can choose to give them undeserved Mercy. Is it easy? Never! Especially if they have harmed us, or a loved one, in some way. Yet, we must have a drastic ‘attitude adjustment’ to truly grant Mercy and Grace to others, especially those that we judge as ‘not deserving’. So, James wants us to realize that IF we FOOLISHLY refuse to show Mercy, then God MUST judge us accordingly. God is gracious, yet He IS going to Judge us. That Truth should cause us to seriously reconsider our unforgiving attitude. Notice how James ended his admonition? That MERCY rejoices, or exults victoriously, over and against Judgment! So many people, both Believers and unbelievers, say that they want JUSTICE, which is asking for JUDGMENT! They fail to understand that True Justice, will NEVER be what they want, what they really should be asking for is MERCY and GRACE. None of us should be so foolish to demand “What I deserve!” Why? Because we ALL deserve DEATH! See the Charlotte Elliott story. (Author of: Just as I Am).

2:14

True Faith ~ EXACTLY What is it? This is a Key Truth that all of us MUST grasp and understand, not just intellectually, but deep within our heart and soul. It is a Truth that ONLY the power of the Holy Spirit can make a REALITY in your soul and spirit. So, we are going to search God’s Word for the correct understanding of True Faith. 14a. The SINNER, (that’s us) is saved by Faith! Eph. 2:8-10. 14b. The True Believer MUST walk, that is LIVE, by Faith. 2 Cor. 5:7. (Read Amplified Version for clarity) 14c. Without True Faith it is IMPOSSIBLE to please God. (Heb. 11:6. 14d. Whatever we do, without Faith, is SIN! Rom. 14:23, 1 Cor. 3:11-15. TRUE FAITH is a sure confidence that God’s Eternal, inerrant, Word is always TRUE. Notice that it is not a “feeling”. So, what kind of Faith saves a person? James now outlines for us the three kinds of “faith”: What good is it if a person claims to have faith, yet has no works? Can that kind of ‘faith’ save him? Good question… let’s get some True Biblical answers.

2:15-16

If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, this would indicate that person is in a needy condition! See Galatians 6:10. Also see Matthew 25:31-46. 16. So, your response to the person in need is a lovely prayer and a wish for them to become warm and have food. Yet, you physically do nothing to alleviate their desperate needs. Read 1 John 3:17-19. Referring to ‘Rich’ people. Also see Luke 10:25-37. Priest, Levite, and Samaritan. Any so-called Faith, that does not demonstrate a changed life and practical works, in obedience to God’s Word; is a false declaration of ‘faith’ and cannot save their Eternal soul.

2:17

Just in case you missed this Truth; James clearly states that ‘faith’ with no godly works, is DEAD, WORTHLESS, USELESS, A LIE! John Calvin stated that ‘It is by faith alone that one is justified, but faith that justifies is never alone.’ Faith without authenticating actions is a VAIN faith. That ‘faith’ Cannot save your soul. Ephesians 2:10: “For we are God’s handiwork, recreated in Christ Jesus, that we may do those good works which God predestined for us, that we should walk in them.” God created us as His workmanship, Born Again; and planned a good life for us, that we are to live out in doing His pre-planned good works for His Kingdom.

2:18-20

Now James deals with ‘arguments’ or ‘self-justifications’. Read Amplified Version of verses 18-20, for clarity and understanding. 19. But, I believe in God! I even believe in The One True God! How many of us have heard this claim, or a variation of this? So, James deals with that statement. He rightly points out that Satan, and his demons, ALL believe in God; in fact, they are so sure that God is Almighty God, Creator of the Universe, and their Creator; that they shudder in terror and horror, knowing what is coming to them in the end times! The demons bore witness to His Sonship in Mark 3:11-12; Matt. 8:29-34 & Luke 8:26-37. The demons know and acknowledge the existence of a place of punishment, See Luke 8:31, Mat. 8:29. They know Jesus is the coming Judge of the Universe. Mark 5:1-13. They are terrified of the Eternal Lake of Fire! We should pay close attention to what is revealed through the demons’ fears! This should confirm, without a doubt, the existence of Eternal Punishment! Those who claim to not believe in Hell, are fools. 20. James is so concerned about this issue of True Faith, that he continues with Biblical Proof of the necessity of Faith producing godly works, by quoting from Genesis 22:1-14. All these Believers clearly knew who Abraham was, their forefather! He recounts how Abraham was willing to sacrifice his beloved son of God’s promise, Isaac, on an altar to God; in OBEDIENCE to what he believed God had asked of him. No argument, no bargaining, just Faith-filled Obedience. James knows that people can be enlightened in their minds, and even stirred in their hearts, and yet still be lost forever, because they refuse to accept True Faith!!!

2:21

James tells his readers that certainly they must now see, and understand completely, that Abrahams Faith was proved, or shown by, his actions in obeying God’s command. Abraham was justified by his works, based on his True Faith. We sometimes fail to realize the extent of Abrahams Faith. He trusted that God would bring both he and Isaac back from the mountain. See Gen. 22:4-5 & Heb. 11:17-19. Justification is not a process; it is an act of God on behalf of the sinner. Our minds must understand the Truth; then our hearts must desire the Trust; then our wills must ACT ON the Truth. Skip any one of these, and faith is nothing, absolutely worthless!

2:22-23

James continues his brilliant explanation of how Faith and Works work hand in hand to confirm a Believers’ complete Trust in God. Faith made perfect, refers to the active expression of one’s Faith in the obedient works. 23. This supreme expression of Faith, which results in works, reveals to us why God determined that Abraham was righteous, and calls Abraham His Friend. Gen. 15:6, II Chron. 20:7, Isa. 41:8; Also see Rom. 4:1-5 & Gal. 3:6-7.

2:24-25

Now in summary, James tells his readers, and us, how we must surely now see and understand how, by godly works, a man is justified, and not by Faith alone. Although we know that we are saved by Faith; that Faith must be proved by our actions. It is oh, so easy to say, “I believe in Jesus”, and quite another thing to be willing to die, to self, for Jesus. IF we truly believe Jesus is our God, Creator and Savior, and that ALL He reveals to us in His Word, is to be obeyed and acted upon, then our entire lives will be lived out in Faith and obedient works. On the flip side, Titus 1:16 tells us that those who claim to believe in Jesus, yet live out their lives only for themselves, are disobedient, disloyal, rebellious and are unfit and worthless for any good work. 25. James also gives the example of Rahab the harlot, as being justified, meaning she was also pronounced righteous before God by her good works. See Joshua 2:1-21. James uses two people, one considered the Father of the Jewish people, highly esteemed and honored; and the other, a despised foreigner, a woman, the lowest of the low, a prostitute; as an example, to us. Can we see how God’s Truth of a person’s value and worth is different from our perception?

2:26

James gives us the final summary of True Faith and Works. He tells us that our body without our spirit is dead. Faith without godly works is also DEAD, meaning worthless, useless, powerless, counterfeit, an imposter. Only God knows a person’s heart, and their Faith. Is it time to Pray about YOUR TRUE Faith?

Lord, we pray that we will honestly assess our lives to determine IF we are True Believers. If you have any doubt, pray, seek God’s wisdom, by going back over ALL these scriptures, asking the Holy Spirit to enlighten your mind and heart. This is far too important an issue to just skip over; your Eternal destination is at stake! You owe it to yourself, and those you love, to make certain you are a True Believer!

James: Chapter 1

Encouragement and Advice for Believers

1:1

This letter was written by James, who identifies himself as a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ. This title clearly identifies Jesus, as the Lord and God of the Universe, as well as the “Christ”, the Messiah, or Savior, of the world. James was also the leader of the Messianic community in Jerusalem. Many believe he was the chief Rabbi of this Messianic Jewish community. It is interesting that James did not identify himself as the half-brother of Jesus. Matthew 13:54-58, clearly shows that he was indeed, the brother of Jesus. Yet, because he did not believe that Jesus was the Son of God and the Savior of the world until after His resurrection, he perhaps did not feel worthy to even claim the relationship. After all, he, and his family, often thought Jesus was mentally “off”. (Matthew 12:47-50) James is writing this letter specifically for the 12 Tribes of Israel, who had been dispersed from Jerusalem, during the persecutions, into other lands. Since James is writing to ALL 12 Tribes, it would be common sense to assume that the 12 Tribes were still able to be identified. Thus, any references to so-called “lost” tribes of Israel, is erroneous. James personally knew many of these Jewish believers and had heard about others who came to accept and believe in Yeshua. Some Jews may have not been believers in Yeshua until after they had left Jerusalem; yet the letter was for ALL of them. (See Acts 8:1-8) The letter is also for the Gentiles, who were believers in Yeshua, as Lord, God and Savior; so that includes us! James begins his greeting with SHALOM! This would mean a joyful greeting of the Peace and Love of God! Perhaps we should begin greeting friends with the words of God’s Peace and Love ~ Shalom!

1:2-3

Immediately James begins with an unusual reference to their trials and sufferings, not with sympathy, but with great encouragement! James says to consider, or regard, it ALL as JOY! We think, what! are you nuts? Joy? Suffering and trials are to be considered as ALL JOY?? Is James delusional, or out of touch with reality? No! He understands the connection between our trials and suffering, and following Jesus with all our hearts, minds and souls in FULL TRUST of Jesus being in TOTAL CONTROL! There is no other ABSOLUTE TRUTH more important to us in times of trials and sufferings. We must focus on, and believe with all our hearts and minds, that Jesus is in Control, and everything He allows is for our best interests, even the sufferings. This is hard to fathom, as we are so influenced by the worldly values of ease and comfort, that we forget that to follow Jesus WILL BRING SUFFERING! We are guaranteed by Jesus in many scriptures, that the World will persecute His followers. The reference to “temptations” is actually a “testing”. This “testing” is allowed by God to TEST US. How do we respond to the testing trials and sufferings? Complaining? Crying out for deliverance? Get me out of this mess!? Or do we consider that God IS IN CONTROL, thus He has allowed the testing, trials, suffering, whatever form it is; to strengthen and “prove” we are His. How can we even know we will be true to Jesus without a Test? We can’t! Only through these “testings” can our faith be proved and strengthened. So, what does this Testing of our Faith and Trust prove? We are given the answer right here: PERSEVERANCE! Yes, the only way to learn and gain Perseverance as a true Character trait, is through testing of some sort. Do we know we can persevere with just one little testing? Of course not, we need testing, after testing, our entire lives to build and prove our character trait of Perseverance in following Jesus. Remember, to become a true follower of Jesus, we must be transformed in our character traits. This transformation takes time and effort. We must repent of selfish worldly character traits and seek after godly character traits. Perseverance is a godly character trait that Jesus exhibited His entire earthly life. We must develop this same trait IF we are to become true followers of Yeshua.

1:4

Letting Patience run its course and do a thorough work, would mean that we make the effort to persevere and be patient. The patience we must cultivate, is one that causes us to obediently follow Yeshua, even in the storms and trials. We must pray, and make the extra effort to trust Jesus, through the Holy Spirit; listening for His voice to guide us in our trials and tribulations. Too often we seek the counsel of men, rather than God. Your first response should be to call out to God, seeking His guidance, direction, wisdom, and strength. Remember, He knew this trial was coming long before you did!

1:5

WISDOM! That is the one thing we need most during the tough times. And Who gives the quality kind of Wisdom we need? Only God; as He alone knows what is best for us, and what we need to pray for, what action to take, or just wait patiently and let God work out the details. Too often we jump ahead and try to “solve” the “problem” without consulting God. This type of action usually makes the situation worse. So, the very first thing we should do is ask God for His Wisdom, His insight, and His discernment in whatever way we should pray and act. This shows, and proves we DO Trust God! Remember, if we ask for God’s Wisdom, and then ignore Him, and disobey His voice, we have chosen to put ourselves outside the Will of God. Not a good place to be, especially when we are facing trials and sufferings.

1:6-8

Here is the heart attitude we absolutely must develop: Obedience; not wavering or vacillating and hesitating about following and trusting God. If we truly want God to lead, then we MUST be ready to follow, with no doubting and wavering. 7. The Believer who wavers and doubts God, will NOT receive what they are asking God for. You think God has NOT answered your prayers for help? Have you acted obediently, asking in Faith, Trusting God and patiently waited for Him? God cannot answer our prayers if we refuse to Trust Him! 8. Why Not? We are unstable and unreliable and uncertain, and really NOT TRUSTING God; so He cannot lead us if we refuse to follow Him. Think carefully about your trials, are you seeking His Will, seeking His Wisdom, and NOT doubting and wavering? If not, then you now know where the problem lies, with you! God truly wants to see your Faith grow and mature, but He will not force you to obey Him.

1:9-10

Those “brothers” means BELIEVERS. When we are in humble circumstances, that would refer to a situation, or trial, or tribulation, some sort of suffering; we should ‘glory’ in that situation, meaning we should give Glory to God for His provisions, His guidance, His healing, provision, or whatever way God is leading us. As God provides the way through the difficulty, we must give Him the Glory. Be careful not to take ‘credit’ for the ‘solution’ ourselves; always give God the Glory. Remember, He is truly the One Who provides the strength, healing and answers to our difficulties. Too often people may think ‘they’ figured out the solution, but it is God Who provides the True answers. 10. A ‘rich person’, (and that means most of us), is to remain humble, realizing that ‘for the Grace of God, I could be in that situation’. None of us ‘deserve’ to be immune from trials and tribulations. Yeshua has PROMISED that ALL of His true followers WILL SUFFER! That is one promise NONE of us want to claim, yet all of us must be prepared to face. That ‘suffering’ is the ONLY WAY we can be tested and proved in our Faith. There is an old truism: Calm seas does not a sailor make. Anyone can ‘sail along’ in life just fine, IF there are never any problems. But Life itself is filled with all sorts, types and kinds of problems. C. S. Lewis once stated that Christians should NOT be concerned that so many faithful Believers are subjected to trials and sufferings, they should be concerned that some ‘believers’ do not suffer at all. Remember, to be a True Believer is a GUARANTEE of being subjected to trials, tribulations, persecutions and suffering.

1:11

We see this reference to tender flowers and plants, all eventually withering away and dying, to remind us of how fragile and short life really is. None of us get out of this World without dying. The ONLY exception, MIGHT be the Rapture. However, none of us should be counting on that ~ we need to remember that we are only one breath away from Eternity. Today might be your last day on Earth! Are you living your life each day like it might be your very last day on earth?

1:12

James reminds us of the words of Jesus, from Matthew 5:10, (from the ‘Sermon on the Mountain). It would be good to read Yeshua’s Words right now to give us encouragement and wisdom. Read Matthew 5:1-16. These are just some of the reasons we absolutely MUST LEARN to be more like Yeshua. Notice that we cannot just read about how Jesus prayed, spoke, acted, and thought, we must Live it out in our own lives! We are promised the Crown of Life, which Jesus promised to all those that truly love Him and obey His words. This Crown is Eternal, and we should seek to be worthy to receive Crowns promised by our Messiah. Rewards and Crowns are promised to faithful Believers by Jesus, so they must be extremely valuable and important!

1:13

Temptation. Let’s look at it carefully, and analyze what it is, and how we are deceived and led astray by ‘temptation’. First, we must always remember that God NEVER temps us, NEVER! Remember, Temptation NEVER looks like it is evil, it is deceptive and looks like an attractive option. Plus, the world, the flesh, and the devil, constantly deceive, lie and trick us into evil. Satan is very clever, he knows our weaknesses, and takes unfair advantage of us when we are suffering, no matter what the cause.

1:14-16

Now we are given the progression of Temptation into Evil. Notice that first there is a desire, or enticement; we are ‘baited’ by deception of foolishly thinking that the desire, passion, or enticement is a ‘need’, not a ‘want’. The beginning of the Battle is actually in our MIND. Then, we do exactly what Eve did in the Garden of Eden. She listened to the lies of the tempter, then she looked at the ‘fruit’ and saw it was ‘attractive’, then she believed the lies of the evil one, foolishly believing the lie that it would ‘make her wise’, then she succumbed and committed the sin of ‘tasting the evil’. 15. Notice James uses another analogy to show us the progression. First, the evil desire is conceived, grows in our mind. Then we falsely convince ourselves the evil is ‘o.k.’ We actually LIE to OURSELVES! Then when we commit the sin; and it bring forth…. Enjoyment? Fun? Satisfaction? NO! NO! NO! SIN always bring forth DEATH! We don’t physically die from every sin, but we do remove ourselves from God’s Grace, and place ourselves outside His Will and that is a form of spiritual death. Unconfessed sin will bring Suffering, Sorrow, Shame, and eventually DEATH. 16. James warns us DO NOT BE DECEIVED! Remember, there is ALWAYS a choice. We must ‘turn away’ from the deception, whether it comes from outside forces, or from within our own minds or emotions. Too often we follow our emotions… this must be o.k. because it ‘feels’ like it brings me pleasure, fun or whatever; that is exactly how we are deceived, we fall prey to our temporary emotions and feelings, rather than what is True and Good. Think about it, every poor decision, that led you to sin and suffering, you made! You chose to think, do, and say the wrong thing! We are not robots; we can choose to say NO! NO! NO! to sin; instead make the choice to do what is good and right for our lives. It requires power and strength from the Holy Spirit, we cannot just rely on our own strength. We must PRAY to avoid all sin, and instead chose to follow the perfect Will of God.

1:17

Now James shifts to what is actually Good for us; what is a Blessing from God. He confirms that all good gifts, that is Blessings, come from God. James wants us to focus our minds on what is GOOD, not what is Evil. This is sound advice. Keep in mind that those people that insist on having one pity party after another, are NOT healthy folks to be around. They are depressing to everyone, including themselves! So, when we suffer, we should avoid the “Oh poor me,” pity party language and attitudes. Instead, look carefully at ALL the good things God has blessed us with; EVERYTHING good comes from God: Our minds, our bodies, our Eternal Salvation, our family, and friends; things like food, clothes, a place to live, and be secure and safe, and a safe place to lay our head at night. Remember, Jesus said of Himself: “The Son of man has nowhere to lay His head”; meaning He was homeless! (Matt. 8:20) We forget that stark fact about Jesus; He suffered much more than we can ever realize, or fathom. Not only was He homeless, but He, and His followers often had to just eat the grain from the fields, as gleaners, as they had no other source of food. They were a band of men that were constantly traveling, without any place to sleep at night except out in the open. No hotels, no restaurants, no vehicles for transportation; NOTHING! Think about it, the Creator of the Universe denied Himself all the creature comforts that we just take for granted. Does this stark truth help you put your situation in a different perspective? It should if you are honest with yourself. So, begin, right now, to focus on, and thank God for, the numerous Blessings God has given you. Why not name a dozen, or so, right now?

1:18

This verse is extremely crucial to our correct understanding and appreciation of our Salvation. We did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING of ourselves to obtain the Mercy and Grace of God needed for our Salvation. His, God’s, OWN FREE WILL using the Word of Truth, brought light and truth to our stubborn, sinful hearts the truth and conviction that we are sinners. We, of ourselves, could do NOTHING to remove ourselves from our ETERNAL DEATH SENTENCE! Only the Mercy and Grace of God, through the Sacrifice of Jesus and the Truth of God’s Word: JESUS DIED ON THE CROSS TO PAY THE PENALTY OF ETERNAL DEATH AND SEPARATION FROM GOD. That was our fate: Eternal Death and Separation from God! The Holy Spirit is the one who enabled us to realize our sorry state of sin, and confess our sins, repent of our sins, accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, and accept the FREE ETERNAL GIFT OF SALVATION. So, we then, become the kind of First Fruits of His Creation. Oh, we’re not there yet, we still have a lifetime of SANCTIFICATION to slowly transform us into the image and likeness of Jesus. These GOOD GIFTS referring to our Gifts of Eternal Life, Sanctification, and Glorification; all with the incredible Joy of being with our God Forever, ALL come from God. Heaven help anyone who thinks for even a second that he/she did ANYTHING to merit or earn these incredible Gifts from God!

1:19

So, now, knowing this, HOW DO we respond? James tells us: Let all of us be quick to hear (the Word of God, the Truth) and slow to speak. It is amazing how many people fail to realize that we only learn while LISTENING, NOT when speaking! Notice that we listen to understand TRUTH, then in understanding the Truth, we apply what we understand, the Truth, to our lives! So those who talk a lot, and like to hear themselves speak, are not learning. They are foolish, and often arrogant and self-absorbed, or just plain selfish. When you hear someone talk, talk, about themselves, watch out, these folks are fools. Our words are very powerful. We must remember this Truth. Everything we think and say has repercussions. Is what you are saying True? It is helpful? Gracious? Is it needed? These few reflections can keep us out of a lot of trouble; and avoid damage and hurt to ourselves and others. Notice that James also tells us that we are also to be slow to become angry. So, let’s analyze this a bit, why do we become angry? Because we do not get what we want, or things don’t go the way we would like, or something similar. Now, there is something called “justifiable anger” meaning we see a wrong being done to someone else and want to do something to ‘right that wrong’. There are, of course, a lot of situations that are not right, that means they are evil, or against the Will and purpose of God. These are the areas we should be angry about; yet we should ‘sin not’, thus we should determine, with prayer, and Godly direction, what action we should take to assist in changing the evil that is being done. Yet, the Anger James is teaching us about, is the selfish anger that directly affects us and others. Now, keep in mind, that sometimes what was done to us was wrong, or evil, yet we are still cautioned to be ‘slow to anger’.

1:20

So WHY should we be slow to anger? James tells us: Man’s anger does NOT promote God’s HOLY righteousness. God wants righteousness. God wants us to carefully analyze and chose our response to the evil, rather than just REACT. That is what most of us do, React! Usually a reaction is an emotional ‘revenge attitude’ of some sort. Anger also leads to hating. Hating leads all the way to MURDER! So, do we see how our emotion of Anger has now become our BOSS, actually having control over us? And who is behind this BOSS? You guessed right, satanic demons. These evil entities want us to be controlled by our emotion of Anger, rather than Trusting God. Jesus warned us about that more than once. A RESPONSE would be carefully thought out, prayed about, and, ideally, would be a Response guided by the Holy Spirit. Sometimes, God just wants us to let Him handle it. That is absolutely the hardest thing for most of us to do. Why? Because we want it our way, right NOW! Plus, when we wait for God, and Trust Him; we must admit that we are NOT in control. Remember, we must remember the TRUTH, we just think we are in control. Who is really in control?

1:21

James continues with his lessons for us by telling us what we should do. SO, (because of what he has just told us), this is what we should do: “Get rid of, (purge)” Then he begins to tell us exactly what we need to purge from our character. This means we need to have a heart change and attitude adjustment. Confession time is coming! We need to admit our tendencies to uncleanness and evil and seek Gods Word to cleanse our minds and hearts. Our ‘flesh,’ and ‘emotions’, wants it ‘our way’ rather than seeking after God’s Will and righteousness. This is a crucial issue. Most of us pray for God to ‘correct the evil done to me’ rather than praying for purity of heart, mind, and soul. Think about most of our prayers: We pray for safety, protection, provision, healing, etc. Very seldom do we fervently and continually pray for purity, for selflessness, for a humble heart, to deny ourselves, take up our cross and follow Jesus, with all our heart, soul, and mind. True repentance will be when we cry out to God, I don’t want to be like this (meaning selfish), anymore. Then, and only then, will we seek, and pray for, purity and holiness in our lives, day after day.

1:22

Now James hits the nail right on the head. This is the result we must attain: We MUST become DOERS of God’s Word, not just Hearers. WHY? Because we DECEIVE OURSELVES. That means we LIE to ourselves and believe the lie. What fools we are! So, let’s look at some ways we are “hearers only”: We twist the truth to accommodate ourselves, we use subjectivity and relativism. We are superstitious, we are emotional, we are oh, so, ‘Theoretical’, instead of being OBEDIENT to God’s Word. Whenever you find yourself telling others, or God, ‘but, this and this was done to me, or they deserved that, or…’, you get the idea. Instead of focusing on how we ‘justify’ our actions, let’s look at some ways we can become DOERS of God’s Word. Looking intently; searching the Scriptures, digging deep into God’s Word, just as we are doing right now. Devotional reading is NOT EVER enough! Reading, praying, studying, and applying God’s Word EVERY DAY! Memorizing, and praying God’s Word during those ‘challenging times’. Write down an area you need the Holy Spirit to REALLY do a work in your heart. Seek God with all your heart, mind and soul, every single day. Remember, you are either in God’s Will or your will. God’s Will is becoming more and more like Jesus, your will, is worldly backsliding, which means you are following someone other than Jesus. Pray fervently about the areas you need a heart of obedience. Remember, you have not, because you ask not. God will Sanctify you, and transform your heart attitude, as you truly seek Him.

1:23-24

So, if we carefully LISTEN to God’s Word, then verbally, or mentally agree with it, yet do not OBEY His Word, then James says we are like a person who carefully looks at himself in the mirror (thinking ‘yes, I need to do something about myself’) 24. Then the person goes on their merry way and does NOTHING to change themselves. Why even bother listening to God’s Word, if we don’t intend to OBEY it? We are actually treating God’s Word as if it was useless and futile. Do we realize this is one of the ways we BLASPHEME God’s Word?!! We are lying to ourselves, actually deceiving ourselves, about the very nature and purpose of God’s Word. We are fools if we claim ‘salvation’ and yet persist in sin which leads to death. Romans 6:23 “The wages of sin is DEATH! (that’s what we earn!) “Yet, the gift of God is Eternal Life through Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior”. Notice that the gift is THROUGH, or IN, JESUS AS OUR LORD AND SAVIOR. If we refuse to obey Him, then He isn’t our LORD and SAVIOR, because we have refused His LORDSHIP and SAVING GRACE! This is such a crucial issue; we must come to a full understanding and knowledge of what it means to truly be a FOLLOWER OF JESUS.

1:25

BUT, remember this is one of those words that should grab our attention. Because now James is telling us what is needed by true Believers. We must carefully search God’s Word. Notice he calls it the ‘law of LIBERTY’! Not restrictions, but LIBERTY. Why, because God’s Word (Laws and commands) actually give us LIBERTY which is TRUE FREEDOM! See James 2:12. Remember, Patrick Henry crying out to his fellow countrymen, “Give me LIBERTY or give me death!” He was seeking true FREEDOM! Jesus told his ‘followers’ IF you TRULY LOVE ME, YOU WILL OBEY MY COMMANDS. See John 14:15. Why? Because Jesus knows that ONLY through obedience to His Word can we ever hope to be truly Free ~ Free to be the perfect person that God created! YES! God created YOU to be PERFECT! Then Jesus tells his disciples, and us, that only by being obedient to His Word, are we truly united with Him in Love, and can expect to bear eternal fruit, and be confident that He will answer our prayers. See John 15:1-14. Why is this so important? Because when we obey God’s Word, we are LIVING IN HIS WILL. That is the PERFECT place to be, in God’s Will! This is TRUE FREEDOM! Freedom from the evil and suffering of sin! However, disobedience is living outside the Will of God; and that means we are living outside of REALITY. That is crazy! Why would we be so foolish as to try to live outside of true reality? Because we believe the LIES of the evil one! Sometimes, we tell ourselves these foolish lies ~ ‘this one time won’t matter’, ‘it’s no big deal’, ‘no one but me will know’, you can add your own lies that you have been a VICTIM of. Notice that we are ALL VICTIMS of LIES! LIES are evil and destructive, they all come from Satan and his demons! So, why do we fall Victim to these Lies? We are in a vicious BATTLE between our Fleshly desires and our Spiritual desires of our Soul. Which one is our ultimate Goal? Of course! Our souls are ETERNAL, our flesh will one day get old, sick and die. So, we must make an EFFORT to seek the Spiritual well-being and PERFECTION of our Eternal Souls. See John 8:36, Matt 7:21-24, Psalm 19:7-11.

1:26

Now James says IF you think you are ‘religious’ which means outwardly observant of the ‘rules’ of religion, and do not CONTROL your tongue; that is, your words, but lies to (actually deceives) your own heart, then your religious service is absolutely WORTHLESS! This may seem harsh to us, but it is the HARSH TRUTH! Notice that the word ‘Religion’ is used only a few times in the New Testament. The Greek word means ‘fearing or worshiping God; to tremble or be fearful’. In our world, ‘Religion’ is defined as a system of faith and practice. The forms and ceremonies emphasize outward observances. Remember that Jesus was NOT religious, He was always obedient to His Father in Heaven! Jesus told us He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life; no one comes to the Father except through Me. John 14:6. Following Jesus is a Way of Life, not a ‘religion’. This is one of the ways we can know what is in our hearts, by what comes out of our mouth! Our Words are very POWERFUL! Those who speak evil, curse, criticize, gossip, or speak forth anything else that is harmful; are speaking EVIL. Notice that one of the most painful and destructive is Gossip. This is a form of BETRAYAL. This sin undermines trust, relationships, confidences, and spreads injustice. Gossip is slander of others! See Rom. 1:30, 2 Cor. 12:20, James 4:11, John 8:7. Even the Old Testament gives us clear instructions regarding this evil: Lev. 19:16, Prov. 11:13, 18:8, 26:20, 26:22.

1:27

James refers to True Faith as Pure religion and being undefiled before God the Father. This would mean we are to be OBEDIENT to God’s Word. James addresses two areas as being specifically identified: We are to have a personal walk of being holy and pure, being ‘unspotted from the world’. This would mean we are morally obedient to God’s Word. See Isaiah 1:15-17. We must have a true, real concern for others, especially the ‘needy’, specifically those who are fatherless and widows. It is interesting that James did not say ‘orphans’ meaning children who had no father OR mother, but ‘fatherless’. How many children today are ‘fatherless’, with no father to really love or care for them? The numbers are staggering. These children are ‘starving’ for a real father. In James day, a widow had no way to support herself, she was usually destitute and had to depend on extended family to survive. So, when we care for the ‘needy’ we should be wise and discerning to help those who are truly needy, not ‘wanting’, or ‘irresponsible’ or just plain lazy. James was not just a ‘moralist’, keeping a list of ethical guidelines, he was one who was committed to demonstrate by his very life, day in and day out, that he owes everything to his King. See Matt. 23:23. So, if we truly ARE followers of Jesus, we must heed James’s encouragement to the reality of applying God’s Word, and nature, in our Christian lives. See Gal 5:14. Are we living identifiable as His First Fruits in His redemptive work, though Jesus Christ, as our Lord, God, and Savior?

O, Lord, our God, plant these seeds of Truth of Your Word, deep into our mind and soul. Transform our rebellious heart into a heart of Obedience to You, and to these Truths we have studied to understand. Remove our selfish tendencies and replace them with a generous heart and spirit. May each of us, deep within our Eternal souls, with the transforming power of the Holy Spirit, truly desire to make a new, fresh commitment, to live faithful, true Christian Lives, as First Fruits of Jesus, every single day of our lives! Shalom!

Galatians: Chapter 6

Eternal Truth and Eternal Life

Remember, God’s Word is ETERNAL. Jesus told us that “Heaven and Earth will pass away, BUT My Words will NEVER pass away”. So, knowing this Truth, how important is it to carefully study God’s Word on a DAILY basis? Crucial! Our very success in life depends on God and His Word; so, make it a practice to continue to study and search God’s Word; and apply His Word to your life!

6:1

Paul once more exhorts them as Brothers, saying IF any person is overcome by sin, you who are spiritual and are responsive to and controlled by the Holy Spirit, should gently set the sinner right and restore and reinstate him without any sense of superiority; keeping a prayerful attitude to avoid temptation yourself. Notice a ‘spiritual’ person is one who is controlled by the Holy Spirit, NOT someone who claims to be spiritual. Spiritual people are always humble.

6:2-3

The Greek word for ‘burden’ refers to a very heavy burden too heavy to carry alone. An especially heavy temptation and spiritual failure. We learn to get along with others, even those who fail miserably. In this way, we follow the example Jesus gave us of forgiving others, regardless of if they ‘deserve’ it or not. (3.) We must set aside all self-pride; avoiding the false idea of thinking WE would never commit such a sin. We are ALL sinners in one way or another. There, but for the Grace of God, go I.

6:4

We are admonished to scrutinize ourselves to see our own faults and sins, confess my own sins and seek to repent and accept God’s forgiveness. We can NEVER compare ourselves to others. We can rejoice and have the personal satisfaction of knowing we have obeyed the Holy Spirit without the need to boast to others.

6:5-6

Now the Greek word refers to a pack carried by a soldier. It only contained the things needed, and was kept as light as possible, so the soldier could move quickly and easily. This is the same word Jesus used to indicate what He assigned to His followers. (See Matt. 11:30, Rom 15:1; I John 3:16, 17) Yet do not neglect your own personal responsibilities; a warning to assist others, but not to take responsibility for them. We are responsible TO others, not FOR them. (6.) An instruction to share our material wealth with those who instruct us in God’s Word. We must contribute to those who sacrifice to teach us the Truth of God’s Word.

6:7

A warning against being deceived and misled. We must guard ourselves against those who would attempt to ‘water-down’ the Word of God. God will never allow Himself to be mocked; pretensions and false teachings will eventually snare those who deceive themselves and others. Whatever we sow, we will reap. Good brings good, evil brings evil. Today we say, “What goes around, comes around.”

6:8

Paul wants to make certain we do not miss this universal law of living. If we put our time and efforts into seeking after worldly, fleshly desires and wants, we will reap decay, ruin, and destruction, but those who spend their time and effort seeking after Eternal Truth will reap the blessings of Eternal Life. (Consider memorizing Matt. 7: 24-27: “Therefore, anyone who hears these words of Mine and puts them into practice, it like a wise man who builds his house (life) on the rock (Jesus). The rains came down, the streams rose, the wind blew and beat (this represents the disasters that come into our lives) against that house, and yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the Rock. But anyone who hears these words of Mine and does not put them into practice is like the foolish man who build his house on sand (the world’s values). The rains came down, the streams rose, and the wind blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash and was completely destroyed.” Notice that the “Therefore” refers to ALL of Jesus’ words from Matt. 5 through Matt. 7:23.

6:9

Paul continues by encouraging us to not lose heart and grow weary in doing what is right. We must be patient; God will bring His blessings into our lives. The blessings will come at just the right time in God’s Eternal Plan. Maybe not according to our schedules, yet we must remain faithful and trusting. He knows the best for the long term, not our short-sighted plans. Keep in mind that most rewards will be given in Heaven, so we should not expect to see results for everything here on earth. Plus, the rewards in Heaven last forever! We Americans are very gratification-oriented, causing us to miss the Eternal rewards. Consider memorizing Hebrews 12:1-3. Don’t be lazy, look it up!

6:10

So, knowing all this, we must be looking for opportunities to do good to all people; especially those who are believers. We should seek to obey the Holy Spirit and be useful and helpful to others; not just in spiritual matters but being a blessing in every area of their lives. Remember those who have great needs; those who are hungry (support your local Food Bank) especially children who are hungry and abused (every eight minutes a child dies of starvation-related causes). Your church has a benevolent fund; plus, we hear of needs of those ill and out of work; the list goes on and on. If you want to be blessed by Jesus, just pray, and ask for guidance. The needs are great, He will direct you, IF you are sincere about helping others! Consider using the Thank You and Live Forever envelopes to help the working poor AND share the Truth of Jesus!

6:11

Now Paul gives a summary in his own handwriting by saying, see what large letters I am writing with my own hand. We assume because of his vision problems, the only way he could write was with large letters. This was to make certain the Galatians (and us) clearly understood these were his summary of these issues.

6:12

All those who want to make an impression on others and a “show”; compel and force you to be circumcised so that they can escape being persecuted for the allegiance to the cross of Christ Jesus, the Messiah. Whenever anyone says “You MUST do such and such to be called a Christian” it is a sure warning that they are 21st century Judaizers. Beware! Only obeying God’s Word by repenting and following Jesus is required to be Truly His follower.

6:13-14

Paul tells them that even the circumcised Jews do not really keep the Law, but want the Galatians circumcised so they can brag about it. Ever hear anyone say: “I got five people saved last week!” Really? God’s Word says ONLY the Holy Spirit saves; we are called to disciple (teach and guide) those who God saves. Beware of these types of braggarts. (14.) Paul says he would not brag, or glory, in anything or anyone except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Messiah; through whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. Paul had such a strong and certain belief in Jesus, that his peace, joy, and victory was in Jesus alone. Nothing could change his clear and powerful faith in Jesus as Lord, God, and Savior. Paul lived a life of proper balance, so that nothing, not even severe beatings and near-starvation could cause his faith to falter. Paul confirms that only Jesus can save anyone. There is absolutely no other way to God and Heaven.

6:15

So now we should all understand clearly that circumcision, or any other ritual, has any importance, but only the new creation, being born again as a new creation in Christ Jesus. Our new nature is our born-again spirit. We were dead in our spirit, we are now alive forever in Christ Jesus. We can never be lost; Jesus promises us He will never leave us or forsake us; we are His forever!

6:16

We can be at peace in our lives. God’s true peace and mercy are ours. We must discipline ourselves to live by this Truth, not allowing ourselves to be swayed by what is going on around us in the world. We can stand fast, knowing we already have Eternal Life. We fear nothing, not even death! The Almighty God Creator of the Universe is my Savior and Lord. He is all powerful, all knowing, everywhere, always! Who or what can ever come against us?

6:17

Paul asserts that from this time forward let no one ever trouble him by making is necessary for him to vindicate his God given authority and the divine and eternal Truth of the Gospel. He testifies that he bears on his body the wounds, scars, and other outward evidence of severe persecutions as marks of the Lord Jesus. All these testify to the fact that Jesus owns Paul! Does Jesus own you? Are there ‘marks’ (sacrifices and other things that testify to Jesus owning you?)

6:18

Paul ends with a prayer for ‘the grace, spiritual blessing of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Anointed Messiah to be with your spirit brothers. Amen.’ Do we end our letters and correspondence to other believers with a prayer for all God’s grace and spiritual blessings of Jesus, our Lord, God, and Savior to be with their spirits? When we say goodbye to family and friends, why not add something like this closing prayer for their spiritual well-being and encouragement! How much more powerful would this be than simply; ‘so long, have a safe trip.’ Simple changes can make a world of difference. Try by saying, “God bless you!” rather than just “have a nice day”. As you see someone hurting, offer to pray for them. Remember, they probably really do need your prayers! Be open to the leading of the Holy Spirit. Seek God with all your heart and soul. Pray God’s Word into your own life and the lives of others, especially your family and loved ones. Begin each day with heartfelt thanksgiving and prayer, seeking God’s guidance and direction. End each day with prayers of thanksgiving and worship. Remember those you have promised to pray for. Truly successful people ALWAYS pray and seek the Wisdom and Guidance of the Holy Spirit.

May God richly bless you as you pray Psalm 119: 10-11 into your own life: With my whole heart I have sought you, oh, let me not wander from your commandments. Your Word I have hidden in my heart that I might not sin against you.

Galatians: Chapter 5

Freedom Brings Obedience and Success

We have learned that: We are Free from the Law (Romans 8:2) We are Dead to the Law (Galatians 2:19) We have been delivered from the Law (Romans 7:6) Jesus Christ is the end of the Law (Romans 10:4)

The ‘Law’ serves as a reminder of the moral standards set by God. Yet, we as Christians must seek to build our character traits on those of our Lord and Savior, Jesus, who is far above the Law. We seek to follow Jesus and be Holy and Blameless before God. So, Paul exhorts the Galatians, and us, to stand firm in the Faith and Freedom given by our Lord and Savior. We must exercise our Supernatural Faith through obedience to the Holy Spirit.

5:1

Therefore, stand fast in the Christian Freedom provided by Jesus Christ. Notice the “therefore” refers to the Truths we have learned in the previous chapters. Paul gives us practical applications on the ‘How To’ of standing firm in our faith. We have been freed from the bondage of sin and must strive to maintain our freedom. Our choices determine our remaining in freedom or falling back into slavery (bondage). Our choice to obey the Holy Spirit within us affects us, and all those we encounter. You are a Living Witness to the Truth of the Gospel. How does your witness look? Are you a Living Example of True Faith and obedience? Or are you a stumbling block? Does your life encourage others to accept Jesus or reject Him? These are powerful and eternal reasons to begin each day in prayer, seeking to obey and be faithful to Jesus, who died for us.

5:2

Notice that it is I, Paul, who tells you that if you receive circumcision (as a religious act of ‘works’), then Jesus Christ is of no value to you. Notice that Paul did not oppose circumcision UNLESS it was tied to the Judaistic theology which insisted that circumcision was absolutely necessary for salvation. Anyone who was circumcised for the reason of being saved; then they added ‘works’ to faith and demonstrated that they had NOT exercised saving faith in Jesus alone.

5:3

Paul strongly states again that anyone who submits to circumcision for the sole purpose of trying to earn salvation, was deceived. If a man believed that the rite of circumcision was necessary, then they were under obligation and bound to obey ALL the Law and its ordinances. They placed themselves under the bondage of the Law. (See Romans 11;6, Romans 4:4,5. James 2:10, etc.) It is either a free gift: GRACE; or salvation is “by works” which is futile!

5:4

Paul continues to warn them that IF they seek to be justified and declared righteous before God through the Law; then they are brought to nothing and are then separated from Christ. No one can ‘straddle the fence’ and ‘say’ they accept Grace and still attempt to adhere to the Law. These are two separate ways of salvation: Grace is God’s Way, a guaranteed method. Man’s way, the Mosaic Law system, is ‘by works’, a method that is guaranteed to fail! Again, all false religions attempt to use rituals, rules, and various ‘laws’, to try to work their way to God, all the while rejecting God’s sacrifice of His only Son, Jesus, on the cross! Think of it this way; you tell your family member or friend; “I love you.” Then you ignore, neglect, and refuse to even acknowledge their existence. Do your actions match up with your words? Hardly. If we say “I love you” to God, then we must seek to know Him and honor Him by obeying His commands.

5:5

Paul continues, telling us: For we, not relying on the Law, but through the Holy Spirit’s help, eagerly await the return of Christ. At the coming of Christ Believers will be completely conformed to all the requirements of God’s Will. We will be Glorified. By our faith, we anticipate and wait for the blessed Hope. The inward righteousness began at Justification, by obedient faith; now our transforming Sanctification is by faith through the transforming power of the holy spirit. Only when we leave our earthly bodies, will we be completely transformed into an outward righteousness at our Glorification; and that is at the appearance of Jesus.

5:6

How does True Faith work? Only by True Love. Our Faith is always shown by our Love. Any type or kind of ritual is meaningless and counts for nothing. Man’s way is Law. God’s way is Love. A man who deeply loves his country is not the same as a man who is simply ‘law abiding’. One person is a servant, the other a Lover. A Believer knows and understands that salvation is by Faith alone. Yet he also knows that the ‘proof’ of his faith shows itself through Love; works that honor God and His creation. Faith without works is dead. (See James 2: 14-24)

5:7

Paul uses the example of running a race with the intent to win stating they were running the race nobly. They were on the right tract ~ then ‘someone’ ‘sidetracked’ them and threw them off course. Are we thrown off course, or sidetracked by someone or something? Something ‘comes up’ that distracts us from our intended course of following what the Holy Spirit has led us to do. Something “urgent” or “important” or very appealing, you name it. Can you think of times you are thrown off course? Sometimes it is something ‘good’ but not what is “best”. Someone appeals to us to help them ~ I need your help! Be careful to seek God’s guidance in these areas; otherwise, we are not doing His Will ~ sometimes we are enabling someone else to avoid responsibility, or avoid seeking God themselves. We can quench the Holy Spirit by “bailing someone out” of a mess they got themselves into by disobeying God.

5:8

This evil persuasion is NOT from God! Whatever causes us to go ‘off course’ is never of the Holy Spirit. Anything that mixes works of the Law and Grace is never of God. Our freedom is in hearing and obeying the Holy Spirit. We must be careful not to let other voices convince us of ‘another gospel’.

5:9

A little leaven causes the entire ‘lump’ to be leavened. When we add yeast to the dough it spreads and permeates into the entire lump of dough and causes it to puff up. So, it is with lies and errors. A few false statements, or teachers, will lead an entire congregation in the wrong direction, away from Grace, into Law or a cult. Just accepting one false statement can cause the whole conception of Faith by Grace alone to be lost, the result is disaster. Remember, that the lies (yeast) causes the ‘puffing up’ this refers to the erroneous concept that we, of our own power, have something of value, or can follow some ritual, to contribute to our salvation and sanctification. This is not true, only the Holy Spirit can bring us to righteousness and holiness. The ‘puffing up’ is a reference to our pridefulness. If we feel proud of ourselves over something we have ‘done for God’ it is a sure sign of self-pride and we have deluded ourselves. We are on the wrong track.

5:10

Yet Paul assures them that he is confident and optimistic about the outcome. He believes that in the Lord they will correctly access the situation and not have an antagonistic view, but rather that they would think the matter through carefully and prayerfully, with the Holy Spirit’s guidance, and agree with Paul. The person, or persons, who are attempting to lead them astray will have to bear the penalty of their false teaching.

5:11

Paul once again calls them Brothers, referring to their standing as brothers in Christ. He appeals to them to reason carefully and think the facts through. If I, Paul, still preach circumcision, as some accuse me of doing as necessary for salvation, then why am I still persecuted? If that were true, then the cross of Jesus Christ would be meaningless and worthless, and no longer a stumbling block. Why was it a stumbling block? Because the cross means man is totally unable to contribute anything to his salvation. The Jews found this ‘offensive’. “What? You mean I am a worthless sinner! Me, a Law-abiding Jew?! I can’t accept that!” That is EXACTLY the problem all self-prideful people have with the True Gospel message! In other words, IF we, or anyone, could save themselves, then Jesus’ death on the cross would mean nothing and be worthless!

5:12

Now Paul really uses strong language and states that he wishes that those men who are pushing for circumcision would go all the way and ‘cut themselves off.’ The polite King James translation fails to convey what Paul is saying here. He is stating that he wishes they would castrate themselves! Perhaps Paul is using this illustration to emphasize that those who are impotent cannot produce new converts. There were also pagan priests of the cult of Cybele in Asia Minor that did castrate themselves. Although circumcision had been a religious rite to show that the Jews were obeying God, it no longer had any meaning for believers.

5:13

Remember, Brothers, that you have been called to Freedom in Christ. Not freedom to do whatever you want, but freedom to love one another. He reminds them that their freedom was not to be used in selfish worldly ways but was to be used through obedience to the Holy Spirit to serve the body of Christ. Each day we must ask God “Is what I am planning to do today bringing you Praise, Honor and Glory; or is it a selfish endeavor?” Asking God to guide, direct and instruct us and give us His Wisdom in our daily life, will bring Him Praise, Honor and Glory. We need to be sensitive to the Holy Spirit leading us. Even if we think we are to do something God is leading us to do, we need to be careful and seek Godly counsel to make certain we are doing it with love and in a Godly manner. In our whatever current circumstances, you are in, it is easy to blame others for our own failures. Be honest, ask God to reveal to you your failings, then seek forgiveness. We are tempted to place blame on others or think ‘someone’ should be doing something to help us out of our problems. But maybe we are the problem. Maybe we, the Believers, need to spend more time praying and seeking God’s power and might in our lives. Are we really living for Jesus, or for self? Maybe we need to take the counsel of 2 Chronicles 7:14 and apply it to ourselves regarding our own Family: “If my people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” Then in verse 15, God says, “Now My eyes will be open and My ears attentive to prayer made in this place.” verse 16 “For now I have chosen and sanctified this house, that My name may be there forever; and My eyes and My Heart will be there perpetually.” The land and house can be applied to your own life and home. We all desperately need God to bring us into a Godly Bible-Believing lifestyle. Are you studying the Bible daily to learn what blessings God has for you? Yet, we must seek God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength.

5:14

Paul goes on to summarize that the whole Law concerning human relationships is completed and fulfilled in one precept: “You shall love your neighbor as you love yourself.” (See Lev. 19:18 and then confirmed by Jesus in Matthew 22:39; Luke 10:25-28) How do we do this? Jesus tells us in Romans 13: 8-10. 8: Keep out of debt and owe no man anything, EXCEPT to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor, who practices loving others, has fulfilled the Law relating to his fellow men, meeting all its requirements. 9: The commandments, You shall not commit adultery, …not kill, not steal, not covet, or even have an evil desire, and any other commandment, is summed up in one single command; you shall love your neighbor as you love yourself. 10: Love does no wrong to one’s neighbor, it never hurts anyone. Therefore, loves meets all the requirements and is the fulfilling of the Law.

5:15

Now Paul issues a strong and grave warning: But, if you bite and devour one another in strife, be careful that you and your entire fellowship are not consumed and destroyed by one another. Wow! We need to pray for and work with one another and persevere in these difficult times or we will destroy our own family relationships. Perhaps God has allowed this difficult time for us so we will seek His Wisdom and Guidance for our personal relationships. We need to be less critical of others and more prayerful. We need to pray about being part of the solution for our family hurts, and not part of the problem.

5:16

Paul continues his admonition: But I say to you, walk and live habitually in the Holy Spirit; being responsive and controlled and guided by the Spirit. Then you will not gratify the cravings and desires of the flesh. We won’t react in a worldly way, giving in to our human nature without God. Nowhere in Scripture does God tell us He will sanctify the old nature. Our heart is never cleansed: It is replaced with a new one. Thus, no believer will ever be entirely free in this life from the evil desires of our old fallen human nature. We must live in this human body, with its evil desires. It is so easy to blame somebody else, rather than say “God show me what I can do to serve the body of Believers.”

5:17

Then Paul clearly tells us how we work. Part of our being, our very soul, is driven by our human nature, and part of us is guided by the Holy Spirit. The desires of the flesh, our human nature, are opposed to the Holy Spirit dwelling in us. There is a war going on! These two forces are antagonistic to each other, continually withstanding, struggling and in conflict within us! So, we are not entirely free, but are prevented from doing what we desire to do. Do you feel conflicted inside? No wonder, that’s because we inherited a sinful nature at birth; then we received a new nature at our conversion. Both these natures have desires; one for evil and one for holiness. This conflict results in a believer being kept from doing what he wants to do! We can’t be free from the human nature until we leave our earthly bodies. That is the reason we know we will not be Glorified and made perfect until we leave earth!

5:18

However, IF you are guided and led by the Holy Spirit, you are not subject to the Law. Just as Justification is not possible by works, so Sanctification cannot be achieved by human efforts. We must continually strive to follow the Holy Spirit. Are you seeing the crucial importance of obedience to God’s Word?

5:19

Now Paul gives us a list of human nature sins; it is as if he wants us to understand that no one can always be completely guided by the Holy Spirit: The first group of sins are all sexual in nature. Adultery: anything that breaks the purity of the marriage. Fornication: this is ANY kind or type of sexual activity (except within marriage). Uncleanness: this is any kind of impurity in thought, word, or deed. Lasciviousness: this refers to lust, wantonness, shamelessness, insolence, debauchery, any brazen display of these evils.

5:20

Paul continues with the next group of sins: Idolatry; putting anything in priority before God. Sorcery: this word comes from the Greek word, pharmakeia, from which we get pharmacy, or drugs. Drugs were used to create trances. This evil will be prominent in the Tribulation period. (See Rev. 9:21: 18:23.) Hatred or enmity; ill will between people. Strife or discord; Evil actions, the result of hatred. Jealousy: wanting what others have, thinking only of self. Wrath and Anger; fits of rage, seething, calculating how to hurt others, seeking to ‘get even’. Selfishness: seeking to use others for selfish purposes, refusing to give or share. Divisions and Heresies; dissensions and factions, peculiar opinions not Biblical.

5:21

As if this were not bad enough, Paul ends with the action sins we all know are evil and self-destructive. Envy: jealously wanting anything we do not have, yet see others have. Drunkenness, Carousing: excessive use of alcohol, drunken actions, acting foolish. Then Paul adds, ‘and the like’, letting us know other actions can be added to this list. His final warning is that those who do such things shall not inherit the Kingdom of God. Paul warns us that if we live like this it is a strong indication that we are not truly a child of God.

5:22

Now Paul gives us the Contrast of the Fruit of the Holy Spirit. The work which the Holy Spirit within us accomplishes is: The first group is Personal Fruit of Love; listed first because it is the foundation of all other fruit. God is Love. Joy; a deep and abiding inner rejoicing, a sense of knowing God is in Control despite circumstances. Peace; an inner repose and quietness, an internal calmness even in the face of adverse circumstances. The second group is an outreaching fruit, reaching out to others: Patience, Longsuffering; the quality of forbearance under provocation, never considers retaliation even when wrongfully treated. Kindness: benevolence in action, just as Jesus is kind to sinners. Goodness: uprightness of soul and action reaching to others even when it is not deserved.

5:23

The final three guide the general conduct of a Believer who is truly led by the Spirit. Faithfulness: this is the character trait and quality that renders a person trustworthy and reliable, they keep their word. Gentleness, Meekness, Humility: this person is submissive to God’s Word and is considerate of others when discipline is needed, humble in actions and attitudes. Self-Control and self-restraint; this person chooses to curb fleshly impulses and forces themself to control their actions and attitudes and consider others. Paul assures them that obviously no one would make laws against people who practice these things.

5:24

Paul concludes by telling us that those who truly belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh, the godless human nature, with its passions and desires. What exactly does this mean? Christians are identified with Jesus in His death and resurrection. Therefore, our sin nature has been judged. So victory over the sinful nature’s evil desires has been provided by Jesus Christ in His death. True Faith must continually grasp this Truth, or a believer will be tempted to try to secure victory by self-effort. Example: Thank God, I avoided that sin. Wrong! Thanks be to God, the Holy Spirit enabled me to avoid that sin. See the attitude difference? We must always recognize that God, through the Holy Spirit within us, enabled us to avoid sin; we can’t do it ourselves!

5:25

Conclusion: IF we live by the Spirit, then let us also walk by the Spirit. Our actions will follow our belief system. So, since we have our life lined up with God’s Will, then we will progress in thought and actions that give Praise, Honor and Glory to God. We will live in God’s perfect Will. If we falter, then we have chosen to ignore or subvert our belief system. IF we REALLY BELIEVE Jesus died for our sins, how do we act? Our lives reflect our True Beliefs. We can SAY we believe in Jesus all day long, BUT our lives WILL reflect our True Beliefs!

5:26

Then almost as a postscript. Paul mentions attributes that we should NEVER have IF we are truly hearing and obeying the Holy Spirt. Do not become vainglorious, self-conceited, competitive, challenging, and provoking and an irritation to one another; envying and being jealous of one another. Do we complain and gripe? Or do we rejoice with others in their success? Do we encourage others and praise God when they do well? Are we pleasant, humble, hardworking, and lifting others up? Our words and actions will reflect our attitudes, thereby showing our True Beliefs.

We seldom can really fool others, and we certainly can’t fool God. God’s Mercy and Grace will bring us Freedom; yet True Freedom will ALWAYS bring us to joyfully obeying God’s Word! So how do we Really know IF we are obeying God’s Word? Read back over the list of walking and living in the ‘Fruit of the Spirit’. Do YOU have those Godly characteristics in YOUR life? If so, then you are obeying God and bringing forth all the Successful Godly character traits listed! Remember your Goal: You want the VERY BEST God has for you; and that means YOUR Character traits and attitudes MUST change!
